One of my twins has got hold of the haliborange vitamin juice out of the fridge while I was upstairs. He spilt some but definately drank some of it (hed put it in a glass!! He could have had as much as about quarter of a bottle (250 mls bottle). I phoned a chemist and he said I needed medical advice - surgery closed so Ive rung NHS direct but they are v busy so may be while before someone calls back.
Anyone know anything about it??????

kizzie have you tried a and e again or even phone up your local childrens ward and ask one of the nurses there.

kizzie · 11/12/2003 19:44

Hello - they just called back. the nurse went through everything to check that he isnt having an allergic reaction to it (which doesnt seem to be) then she found the backround on it. Apparently very low toxic and unlikely to cause a problem from one episode of overdose (they said this inlcudes up to a full bottle!)
She said risk was very low but that advice on vitamin a is that you would expect a reax 8 to 12 hours after ingestion and signs would be irritability etc so just to keep an eye on him and obviously if anyhting happens in night take him to A and E.

So - phew i THINK that means its all alright!
Will obviously keep an eye on him.

Thankyou so much for all your help and advice!!

Make sure you pamper yourself this evening, okay?!

glad he's ok kizzie. Used to teach an A level food and nutrition option- vitamin A was on the syllabus Just had a quick check back in some texts and The ABC of Nutrition published by BMJ says "High intakes of carotene.... colour the plasma and skin... but do not appear to be dangerous".

If you look on vitamin bottles you will find they all say "in the form of carotenes". I know that as I searched high and low for a form of vitamin A proper rather than carotenes and could only find it in cod liver oil.

Just reading this thread, glad everything is alright but just wanted to say about the ring A&E comments. If you are in a NHS Direct locality usually A&E will have to refer telephone calls for advice to NHS Direct it's become a medico legal thing in alot of departments. Obviously if you were really worried they would always see you.
