I took my friend a couple of weeks ago, there was a very well trained nurse doing the procedure and it was notable for the fact that we had to stop talking as the giggling was getting in the way. I don't think it was the most fun she's ever had but we managed to fit in shopping and lunch before we had to pick the children up after. Take paracetamol and ibuprofen before but apart from a couple of uncomfortable moments it was ok. Good luck, I think worrying before was worse than having it done.

whojamaflip · 22/06/2012 00:19

I can't answer personally but my sil had this done a few years back and she said she was surprised it didn't hurt as much as she was expecting - well in her words it was no worse than a smear.

Best of luck for tomorrow [fingerscrossed emoticon]

liverLadyLass · 22/06/2012 18:49

hi, thanks for your replies,,
it wasn't that bad but very uncomfortable,,
I had a biopsy and then laser treatment,

it was a weird feeling, she gave me a jag to numb my cervix which stung for a good 15 seconds, then she cut away a piece of the cervix to be tested which was sore, then I'd bled so had to wait till it had stopped, then she put this laser in to burn all the abnormalities, you could feel the burning but there was hardly any pain just stinging and uncomfortable, I think the not knowing what's coming next is worse for me,, my legs were rattling with my nervous and the trainee nurse took my hand and told me it was ok, I got to watch the most of it on camera,
my cervix was red raw with white parts,,

I feel really tender n crampy,
I'm just glad it's done know,
she had said I had a ectop something?

she says there was a fair bit of abnormal cells and that the results will be back in three weeks as a letter,

would not like to get another one,
but would if I had too....

Well done be good to yourself this weekend.

Have a little treat

glasshouses · 22/06/2012 20:53

glad you got on OK. i agree that the thought of it is worse than the actual procedure although it isn't exactly pleasant

BelaLug0si · 22/06/2012 23:13

Hi
The "ectop" something is ectopy or ectropian. It's normal - part of the way the body changes during puberty. It means that part of the cervix can look very red because there are blood vessels present just underneath the surface of the cervix.

liverLadyLass · 23/06/2012 12:07

thanks ladies,,, Smile
that sounds about right, my cervix was very red, raw like,, there were white lumps around the edges tucked into the sides kind of thing,, has anyone had similar, what were your results?

OP posts:
BelaLug0si · 23/06/2012 14:49

It's a bit difficult to explain - the white lumps could be several things, did the colposcopist say what she thought they were? I work in a screening lab, so I know a bit about the investigation and treatment side of things but obviously it's not actually my speciality.

The colposcopists' society website is a useful source of information here

DoingItForMyself · 23/06/2012 14:54

I think the white parts are because they put a solution on to show up the abnormalities (mine was a long time ago, but I recall he said it was just like vinegar - a mild acid - that would show him where to do the procedure.

He must have been quite new to it all, as he was so pleased with the burnt bits (quarterising?(sp) ) that he told me to look on the screen and the nurse was horrified at him!

Mine came back as low level changes (CIN 1-2) which if left for several years could have developed into cervical cancer. Had yearly smears for a few years after, now back to 3 years I think, with no abnormalities since.

x

Becky2011 · 23/06/2012 14:59

Yes I've had the same procedure you describe. Results were that all the affected tissue had been cut away so all now ok. I now have annual smears to keep an eye on things.

I had a week off work to recover, bit of discomfort & bleeding for a little while then all ok & no lingering effects. Hope you feel ok, I was more upset about having people rummaging about down there, but got over the cringe factor in the end.

Hope you feel better soon. Yes have treats/ watch a good film to take your mind off it. :-)

BelaLug0si · 23/06/2012 16:02

The white parts is where the acetic acid solution (basically weak vinegar) show up any active areas. There can be normal and abnormal active areas - the abnormal areas show different patterns and densities of how the white patches appear. The colposcopist interprets the patterns to work (alongside other changes) to work out what parts of the cervix if any are abnormal and how abnormal they look.

Doingitformyself - it's cauterising

liverLadyLass · 23/06/2012 18:03

hi, thanks ladies,
bela: that link was usefull thank you,,
do you guys think I could have anything here??

zippyrainbowbrite · 23/06/2012 18:59

Hi

Just read this thread and wanted to say that you should probably still try and take it easy for a few days - I had one last year, felt fine a few days after and went back to work, think I over did it with lifting heavy boxes and started to bleed heavily. When I went to the dr's she said that I'd managed to knock the site inside where they'd cauterised it, and ordered me off work with strict instructions to 'do nothing' for another week!

I know it's hard to try not to worry until you get the results, but remember that they do treatment to prevent the cells turning cancerous, and regular smears will mean that you're actually at a lot lower risk than all those people who never get checked!

liverLadyLass · 24/06/2012 11:41

hi zippy, thanks for your comment,
I'm going to take your advice and take it easy over the next few days, I'm renting and I'm having a three month check this week and just wanted everything done for them coming,, but after your comment is thinking in not to bothered now,

I keep getting this awful green gew which is constantly coming out like I've peed a little Blush it can be smelly too, is this normal?? Blush
also on my hips getting a sharp pain every now and then?
the kids break up this week so I'm just going to go up to my caravan and forget about it,
I've gone and googled it to see if I could recognise any that looked like mine and there was a few, but I don't think I need to be worried, Hmm
thanks for all your support ladies Smile

Not liking the sound of the green stuff LiverLadyLass - i would definitely mention it to GP tomorrow in case its an infection or anything. In fact would it be worth popping to your local drop-in clinic or even A&E? They can just have a quick check to make sure all is in order. Did they give you a leaflet explaining what might happen afterwards?

zippyrainbowbrite · 24/06/2012 13:14

I second DoingIt - green stuff doesn't sound good. It would be best to get it checked out tomorrow as the site might have got infected and you might need some antibiotics to sort it out.

liverLadyLass · 24/06/2012 17:57

I wasn't given anything, just told to not use tampons, and not have intercourse for at least two weeks,, she said I may have a little bleeding, but that was all,,

I would rather make an appointment and see my doctor the drop in centre is a nightmare, would be quicker waiting on a doctor appointment,

I feel really tired today, don't know why?
can't wait for hubby to come home from work for a cuddle Smile

OP posts:
DoingItForMyself · 24/06/2012 19:47

Ah, make sure you tell him that somethings not right though. I think you will feel tired from a procedure like that - from stress as much as anything - but if there is an infection he needs to be keeping an eye on you tonight. x

LucyLastik · 24/06/2012 19:51

the smell is the worst part of it. like burning flesh. i remember it well.

hope you're feeling a bit better now

zippyrainbowbrite · 25/06/2012 09:05

Hope you've managed to get a dr's appt for today and everything's ok x

liverLadyLass · 25/06/2012 10:21

liverLadyLass · 25/06/2012 10:23

I'm wearing pads as I was bleeding and I've just gone for a pee and I've peed onto the pad unknowingly Blush
is this normal,? ive had two kids one naturally one c section, and I'm only 28?
I'm so embarresd Sad

DoingItForMyself · 25/06/2012 11:35

Honestly sweetheart, get to an emergency doctor asap. This can't wait until next week. Has the urgency weeing always been there or is it only since the colposcopy? Can't imagine how they're related, but you should not have to put up with either.

The Drs may be full for normal appointments but insist that you need an emergency appointment or find a walk-in centre.

zippyrainbowbrite · 25/06/2012 12:25

Don't be embarrassed, they'll have seen far worse things, and I agree that it can't wait, it sounds like you need to be seen ASAP.

When I bled after mine I had to just see the on call doc (i was bleeding a lot so was quite worried) and she turned out to be so nice that now I always try and see her. She did an internal exam (which I've never had before as never been pregnant, have only had smears/colposcopys before), and as she did it a big gush of blood came out on her hand Blushand all over the exam bed! I was mortified, but she was lovely about it and just gave me a load of tissues to clean myself up with!

It sounds from the weeing issue that you might have a uti - I'm prone to them anyway - I have to take low dose antibiotics after sex to prevent them, and the dr advised me to take one after I've had a smear /colposcopy too- its easy for your urethra to get bruised or for bacteria to get transferred.

Definitely get yourself seen ASAP - I'm sure it's probably just an infection which they'll give you antibiotics for, but you don't want to wait and let it get worse.
