Ok, so I've tried a hot water bottle. I've tried a bag of frozen peas...

Please help me stop this from hurting!

I have a very painful area in the middle of my inner left thigh. The area is hard but not hot, a very slight swelling and a faint localised pink rash (on pale skin) I first noticed it on Thursday morning, it has got progressively more painful until today when I have been struggling to walk etc. It stops hurting when I get into the right position and stay there, starts again when I move.

I first assumed it was a bruise from playing with my friend's 1yo on Wednesday - she likes to climb people. A lack of any bruise mark has now ruled that out.

Then I thought it might be a pulled muscle, but the lack of response to heat/cold seems to have ruled that out too.

So, I suspect its a thrombosis. Except I have none of the predispositions apart from pregnancy (15 weeks)

I'm fucked if I'm dragging poor dp away from the footy and myself out of my nice warm bed to spend hours in A+E with a bunch of drunks. There's no walk in service round here. I have an appointment on Monday with the midwife, who works from the local hospital, so I really just need to manage things for 36 hours.

Is there anything else it could be? And is there anything beyond rest and toe-wiggling I can do?

Thank you very much Thanks

could it be a boil or cyst starting? sounds awful.

PeanutButterCupCake · 09/06/2012 21:21

Is it a boil starting?

rubyslippers · 09/06/2012 21:23

If it is a thrombosis then do not leave 36 hours
Please ring NHS Direct for immediate advice
Pregnancy is enough to trigger a DVT in some women

Sorry to be the voice of doom but I really wouldn't wait

CMOTDibbler · 09/06/2012 21:25

You need to get it looked at - as you are pg, you are at high risk of dvt, and that needs checking now. Go to A&E

Antidote · 09/06/2012 21:26

Sounds very like thrombophlebitis. If you are pregnant it could be secondary to a deeper thrombosis.

Don't wait till Monday. Go to a&e at 8am, and take a book (or two).

UnChartered · 09/06/2012 21:27

please get it checked out by HCP

thrombosis is very serious and cannot wait 36hrs

RancerDoo · 09/06/2012 21:27

If you think it is a thrombosis you really can't sit about toe wiggling until Monday (and I don't think toe wiggling will help a thrombosis once it has developed).

Could it be an ingrowing hair that has become infected? They can hurt a lot.

PurplePidjin · 09/06/2012 21:28

I don't know about a boil/cyst but I get cystic acne and it doesn't feel like that, even magnified? Pink patch is about 5"x3", spots tend to be 2mm!

Ruby, I have no idea if it is DVT, it's just the most probable thing I can think of right now, which is why I'm asking here iyswim :)

UnChartered · 09/06/2012 21:32

can you feel anything under the skin Purple?

hardening of the tissue?

piratecat · 09/06/2012 21:34

well from what the others have suggested, i would be going to a+e. i know it's a faff. mine is one hours drive away, but you can't risk it iyswim.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 09/06/2012 21:34

I would go to A&E now. You may have a nightmare of a wait, but given that you're pregnant they should scan you for a DVT.

PurplePidjin · 09/06/2012 21:46

Unchartered, no but it hurts to touch so i don't want to prod too hard!

Aww, I'm all snuggled and A+E stinks of piss and vomit. If i hang on til 9am, i could go to the slightly more civilised Minor Injuries unit while dp's out running?

hippoCritt · 09/06/2012 21:52

Could you ring NHS direct? You can't hang around waiting if it's a thrombosis otherwise we will be reading about you in the daily mail!

PurplePidjin · 09/06/2012 22:02

The online one said there are no available call backs. Which means, if I ring them someone will ask stupid questions then I won't sleep properly in case the do call back at 4am...

So, pain management?

Ps i really am very grateful for all the replies Thanks

rubyslippers · 09/06/2012 22:12

As a pregnant woman you may well get a quicker call back from NHS direct?

Worth a shot?

Good luck :-)

QueenieBea · 09/06/2012 22:15

Purplepidjin - you know you really do need to go to A and E, sorry but not worth risking your health to avoid a few smelly drunks.

youarekidding · 09/06/2012 22:19

You need it seen to really.

You know we're fairly close by to each other - I can't go out tonight but am available tomorrow if you need anything.

Oh and stuff the footy - get DP used to interupted TV early Wink

PurplePidjin · 09/06/2012 22:29

Hospital is 30 mins away, say it's a 2 hour wait for Triage. Then 5 hours for a bed. That takes us to 6am. Minor Injuries opens at 8.30

Thanks, YAK, pg is pfb so can just get dp to drop me in Lym on his way into the Forest :)

youarekidding · 09/06/2012 23:47

OK if your sure. If you need anything PM me. I'll check MN when I am awoken wake up at about 7 by my now 7yo pfb!

QueenieBea · 10/06/2012 08:06

Hey Pidj. How are you doing this morning?

PurplePidjin · 10/06/2012 14:48

Nice update!

MIU wouldn't touch me because of pg risk so referred me over to the A+E next to the Ob/Gyn unit (I straddle a county border)

Lovely Mr Registrar took one look and spotted a scratch further doWn my leg. He diagnosed a major infection and has packed me off with mega antibiotics!

OP posts:
QueenieBea · 10/06/2012 15:15

Oh goodness Pidj - how weird that the infection wasn't round the cut, good job you went. You poor thing. Try and get some of those little pro biotic yoghurty drinks to stave off the dreaded thrush if you are on mega antibiotics.

Hope the antibiotics kick in soon.
Here, have a Brew Smile

youarekidding · 10/06/2012 16:52

Glad you got seen. Hope the AB kick in soon

Now time to relax and get DP running around after you for a few days!

PurplePidjin · 10/06/2012 17:05

Apparently, the deep ones tend to go up a vein rather than appearing outwards iyswim. Hardness, redness and swelling along a major route are classic signs... That don't come up on either Boots WebMD or NHS Direct, at least they don't if you're not also running a temperature I guess.

All sorted, managed a Waitrose shop on the way home, dp is doing the hand and foot waiting :o I knew there was a good reason to choose this one to procreate with!
