DeterminedandSpecialMum · 07/06/2012 20:50

I'm really irritable, full of tension, snappy, tired, bloated and general aaarrrggghhh. I really dislike myself this week every month.

What can I do, to make it less severe?

Really appreciate it. As I'm a bitch to be around and DP is struggling with it :(

Evening primrose oil capsules high dose every day - sunflower seeds from one week before period.

If TTC, flax seed oil capsules instead of evening primrose from the day of ovulation.

Worked wonders for my hideous PMT

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 07/06/2012 21:20

Sunflower seeds? Tell me more.

Thanks

How long each month do you suffer from it? I got a tracker App on my phone and realised my pmt started on the day I ovulated. I tried calcium and magnesium for a while, then anti depresents for half of the month' I'm now on them all the time. I really didn't want to take them but I'm happier for it and so is dp, we're no longer on the point of breaking up!

Good luck

marriednotdead · 07/06/2012 23:49

I found that a daily multivitamin WITH MINERALS worked wonders for me and several friends/colleagues. Cheap and cheerful, definitely worth a try Smile

cocolepew · 07/06/2012 23:53

I agree to try minerals, magnesium, zinc and chronium are needed for pmt. Also the oils.

I would try one of the vit/mineral combinations you can get for womens health.

cocolepew · 07/06/2012 23:54

Oh and try to cut down on carbs and refined sugar.

6 small meals a day are recommended for bad pmt to keep your blood sugar level.

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 07/06/2012 23:58

My friend swears by Starflower oil rather than evening primrose oil. You might want to give that a google too.

crazynell · 08/06/2012 00:20

My sympathy!!!
i had it all my all my adult life until the menopause for 2 weeks at a time, as soon as i got my period i was fine - back to normal - i thought i was going mad - thought nobody else but me got it so bad, i avoided people during this time. i got myself referred to st thomas's hospital where they were doing trials into the effectiveness of evening primrose for pmt. it worked for me, it changed my life, literally! The doctor running the trial suggested i take the following combination of minerals and vitamins - i got them from Nature's best - online: the financial outlay is worth it to get your life back
evening primrose capsules x 500 x3 daily, magnesium, b6, vit c, fit b, calcium. Try to eat healthily, i know its easy to gorge on carbs but don't oh and what coco says about blood sugar levels is right. keep fit - even walking can help. Good luck let me know how you get on

Selks · 08/06/2012 00:27

Ditto the high dosage evening primrose oil...worked for me too, but you must persevere with taking it daily for several months for maximum effect.
The other things that help are - be aware of your blood sugar levels as you dint want them to swing or dip. Think whole grains and a small complex carb snack between meals eg couple of oatcakes and small piece of cheese. Exercise helps too eg swimming, and relaxation skills.
The best approach is a holistic one that uses a range of helpful things such as those above... And working to reduce any stress in your life in general.

Selks · 08/06/2012 00:28

Dint = don't

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 08/06/2012 00:31

I think I will try these suggestions .
I'm having an awful time with and I'm not fit to be around people Sad.

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 08/06/2012 06:30

Thanks Ladies.

I have a pretty balances diet but will start looking at what I eat from now.

DP got me some EPO with Cod Liver Oil included too. Am still going to make an appt with doctor also. I do believe it starts when I ovulate too - is there some significance to that?

I've had PMT for roughly a week to 10 days Sad

Are there any foods I should avoid or cut out altogether?

Ploom · 08/06/2012 06:39

I also had bad PMT with irregular periods (26 days or up to 45 days) and my gynaecologist recommended Agnes Castus. I was a bit suspicious of taking a herbal remedy but I've taken it every day for nearly 3 months now and my PMT was definitely better, my periods came spot on 32 days each time and they were a bit lighter. I'm definitely going to carry on taking it.

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 08/06/2012 08:54

Ploom Never heard of it, will look it up.

Have docs appt on Monday 18th June first thing in morning.

reduce your refined carbs/sugars eg wholemeal bread instead if white limit your biscuit in take. If there is a food you are craving thats the one you should resist!

My friend swears by angus catus as well.

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 08/06/2012 09:10

I don't eat biscuits, cake or choc - rarely do. I've not got a sweet tooth at all. I'm a savoury person. Not really craving anything tbh as I get bloating when I have PMT and the first few days of my period.

This is how bad my PMT is - I'm snapping at my DD1 aged 7 because the sound of her voice and constant want is driving me insane. DD2 5 months is teething so is grumpy Sad I just want to be alone. need to scream Sad

Spoken to doc. He told me to take EPO for the next cycle and if not better then need to go in Anti-D's for 6months - we want DC3 eventually.

mizu · 08/06/2012 15:53

Suffer really badly. I do find that agnus castus works, well it helps. I take 2 400mg breakfast and teatime. I also take Magnesium OK, a supplement with lots of stuff like B vitamins and zinc.

I try to get a decent amount of sleep soon after i have ovulated as well as not eating as much sugar. LOVE chocolate but it definitely makes me feel worse. Don't drink alcohol much anymore and this has helped loads too.

Having bad PMT is really crap and I have to plan my life around it as i can feel really terrible at times. I usually get a migraine a week before my period too.

crazynell · 08/06/2012 15:53

Thats good determined altho i think you would need to take EPO for a longer than one cycle to see results.
I'm not a doctor, but i do know how awful pms can be, and i can't imagine how anti d's could help it

i once had this doc who when i was there seeing him and in tears with the misery of pms he turned to his student and laughed and said "thank god my wife doesn't get this" needless to say i didn't go back to him

heather1 · 08/06/2012 15:59

I totally agree with what crazynell said. I had terrible PMT but with a combination of diet, exercise, relaxation and supplements I am now PMT free or with minimal symptoms depending on the month.
I reccommend a book by Maryon Stewart called No More PMS www.amazon.co.uk/More-PMS-Pre-Menstrual-medically-Nutritional/dp/009181622X/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1339167398&sr=1-3
I had telephone appointments with her. It isnt the cheapest but cheaper than a divorce (I am not joking here) and it literally transformed my life.
All that you need is in the book but if you feel like you need a little more guidance then a consulation can help.

DeterminedandSpecialMum · 08/06/2012 16:25

Thanks Ladies. Dr also said about lots of B vitamins too.

re sleep - I have a 5 month old who doesn't sleep thru the night and a DP who works very long hours so sleep is hard to come by at the moment.

I exercise by walking a lot everyday.

Will have a look at that book thanks and look at extra vitamins & minerals I need too.
