Sorry this is TMI, but WTF can't I wee?

I woke up about 7 this morning really desperate for the loo and ever since have felt like I really, really need to pee. But every time I go to the loo, nothing happens Confused I mean, a trickle comes out, but that's all... And there's a burning sensation. But that's it. And then by the time I've washed my hands, I feel desperate for a wee again!

Could it be a UTI? Should I go to the doctor tomorrow? It's incredibly uncomfortable, not to mention frustrating...

Sounds like a UTI

tribpot · 27/05/2012 14:16

Cranberry juice and then doctor tomorrow. Poor you - hope you're feeling better soon.

MrsSnaplegs · 27/05/2012 14:16

sounds like cystitis
lots of water and cranberry juice if you have any
local chemist can sell over the counter treatment today

soaccidentprone · 27/05/2012 14:16

Cystitis?

pumpkinsweetie · 27/05/2012 14:17

It is probably Cisitus, sorry cant spell it Grin, go to your nearest pharmacy/supermarket-they do sachets for it that you put in water.
If that doesn't work get your urine tested at docs as it could be a UTI

LadySybildeChocolate · 27/05/2012 14:17

You need to go to A&E if you can't wee, pet. It's not good to have a build up of urine in your bladder as it can get really nasty (not just a UTI).

nickelbarapasaurus · 27/05/2012 14:18

cystitis.

yo ucan get stuff from Boots that works really quickly - it's just called cystitis treatment (or something)

in the meantime, drink shedloads of water and cranberry juice to dilute and soothe (the cranberry makes it more alkaline)

Iggly · 27/05/2012 14:19

Yep cystitis. I had it - get some antibiotics. And drink a LOT. Mine was bad - like pissing glass. There was even bits of blood Shock (I ended up drinking then would wee in the bath)

Thumbwitch · 27/05/2012 14:19

How many hours now?
Go to the doc asap, failing that go to A&E - it might sound trivial but it really isn't - urinary retention could lead to a kidney infection so go and get it seen to.

Thumbwitch · 27/05/2012 14:20

And don't wait until tomorrow - go today!

ComeAlongPond · 27/05/2012 14:20

Phew, I love you all.

So if I dash to Boots now what do I ask for? Is it on the shelf or at the pharmacy?

I have cranberry juice! Hurrah.

LadySybildeChocolate · 27/05/2012 14:20

Cystitis is when the urine comes out, but it stings. If it's not coming out then it's urine retention and needs treating ASAP.

ComeAlongPond · 27/05/2012 14:21

Oh. Or A&E.

Should I try the cystitis stuff first?

OP posts:
LadySybildeChocolate · 27/05/2012 14:22

Is the volume coming out a lot less then what you're drinking?? Is your abdomen larger then usual?

Thumbwitch · 27/05/2012 14:23

NO don't put any more liquid into the system if it's not coming out - it's just going to start refluxing back up the ureters into the kidney and if you have infection in the bladder it will carry it back to the kidney.
You need to be catheterised, sorry, that involves a doctor - go there. Don't waste your time.

Thumbwitch · 27/05/2012 14:24

kidneyS, obviously.

nickelbarapasaurus · 27/05/2012 14:27

i'd try the cystitis stuff first - mainly because if you've got a good pelvic floor, it automatically closes to stop the wee coming out - when I've had it, the wee hasn't come out much at all, mainly because my muscles are stopping it!

I se Thumby's point about liquid - try the cystitis stuff without the extra liquid first.

obviously, if that doesn't work, then see the doctor.

ComeAlongPond · 27/05/2012 14:28

Oh, shit :(

Um, abdomen is slightly larger than usual but I just ate lunch, so it's hard to tell... More comes out when I've just drunk, but not a huge amount more, and it's less burny.

Okay, so I can't go to the doctor because it's a Sunday so hospital it is?

nickelbarapasaurus · 27/05/2012 14:28

Or - ring NHS Direct before you do anything at all

ComeAlongPond · 27/05/2012 14:29

That's a good idea. NHS Direct it is. I'll do that now.

OP posts:
LadySybildeChocolate · 27/05/2012 14:31

NHS direct can make you an appointment with the out of hours. You can also try calling the surgery, there's always a message on the answering machine telling you what to do if you need a doctor and the surgery is closed. Remember that you'll be sweating so some of the fluid your drinking will be used up with that and other body functions. It does need checking by a medic, I wouldn't follow all of the advice that people give in here as it's likely to be wrong.

CailinDana · 27/05/2012 14:37

Have you had a proper wee at all today? Do you reckon what's come out already in dribs and drabs is the same amount as would normally come out? If not I would see a doctor quickly.

ComeAlongPond · 27/05/2012 14:38

Okay, did the NHS direct online thing and it said cystitis, but no need to see a doctor unless things get worse, just to get some over the counter medication.

So that sounds like the best course of action I think, and I will try to get out of hours doctor if it gets worse?

OP posts:
Thumbwitch · 27/05/2012 14:38

Good idea to phone NHS direct.
I am mostly going on what happened to a friend of mine who had urinary retention - she ended up in hospital for a couple of nights because it went on too long.
I also remember hearing about a Disney cartoonist who put off going to the loo for too long and then had to be catheterised because he couldn't go - the sphincter that controls urine flow can sometimes get "stuck" for whatever reason and it generally requires medical intervention to get it going again.

It's just not worth risking the kidney infection.

LadySybildeChocolate · 27/05/2012 14:40

I wouldn't risk it in all honesty. Kidneys are very sensitive and it doesn't take a lot for them to become permanently damaged. If you're not passing urine or it it's just little dribbles then you really should get it checked as soon as you can.
