Hth

WillieWaggledagger · 16/04/2012 20:18

oh miserable, so difficult to sleep particularly

have you tried oxymetazoline spray (e.g. sinex decongestant)? usually works for me

chipmunksex · 16/04/2012 22:16

Have been using various decongestants; beechams all in one, sinex tablets and beconase nasal spray not all at the same time I hasten to add.

Sadly to no avail.

Thanks for sympathy anyway, if anyone does have a fail safe, sure fire remedy, I really would appreciate it. for one thing it's really putting a dampner on my love life Grin

How about avoiding all mucus forming foods for a few days-dairy (cheese and milk, even in tea as the smallest amount will make a difference), bananas and peanuts.

chipmunksex · 16/04/2012 22:31

I know you're right dolly, but what are you telling me? No tea? no yummy apple and cinnamon yoghurt and no butter on my toast?

It's getting better (coughs, sniffs) I'll be fine. Wink

Dollydowser · 16/04/2012 23:17

Oh yes, and no chocolate either Grin Have as much yummy herbal tea as you like (eg fennel, peppermint) soya yogurt if you must and have cashew nut butter on toast instead. Simples!

Dollydowser · 17/04/2012 07:39

Oat milk in tea tastes fine btw

Flimflammery · 17/04/2012 07:43

Get some Otrivine nasal spray. It works amazingly well - I get bad runny/blocked nose from allergies and it does the trick brilliantly. Much better than ordinary nasal sprays. I don't know how it works, but it's powerful stuff!

Flimflammery · 17/04/2012 07:52

and by the way, milk consumption does not lead to mucus production

Hebiegebies · 17/04/2012 08:03

Film, that article is about having a glass of mik, then charting changes. It des nt seem to cover those who have no dairy ever and seeing the difference from before they stopped eating dairy.

I've gone from having normal colds with lots of snot to having a light symptoms of colds with very little snot by cutting out dairy. This s different from giving u dairy only when you have a cod. BTW I gave up dairy due to migraines, the decrease in mucus is just a great side effect, I only realised after a year that I didn't need hankies anymore

FrankWippery · 17/04/2012 08:06

When you have found the solution please let me know as I have been the same for the past two weeks as well, along with completely losing my sense of taste. I. Am. Pissed. Off.

olivo · 17/04/2012 08:39

I've had a blocked nose for years. Still not found a cure but some of hte better remedies are a saline sray ( sterimar) and the sudafed nasal decongestant is best - has a heavier concentration of decongestant i think.

remember, decongestants can cause rebound congestion Confused if you use them for too long.

brighthair · 17/04/2012 08:52

Menthol crystals?

themarriageplot · 17/04/2012 09:01

Hebiegebies, I've also noticed cutting down on dairy helps decrease mucus.

But I didn't know about a migraine connection. Is that well established, as with mucus?

blackteaplease · 17/04/2012 09:11

My6 doctor told me that you shouldn't use decongestants for more than three days as they actually stimulate your nose to dry out more.

Can you go to the doctors to get it checked out? you might need some steroids to shift an underlying infection

harassedandherbug · 17/04/2012 09:27

My dh has had nasal problems for years. His consultant recommends a sinus rinse. Boots sell the Neilmed one. Basically it cleans out the nose and sinuses. Or if you're too chicken, like me, try a saline spray. Not such fast results, but they do work.

Do get checked to make sure there's no infection though.

Hebiegebies · 17/04/2012 09:30

The migraine connection was first with garlic and cheese, I get a migraine within a few hours of eating it.

I gave up all dairy to see if it helped the migraines that seemed to have no cause, and they did decrease

But since giving up all dairy I'm less intolerant to cheese and arlic, eg I can have a tiny bit by mistake and not suffer so much

Sorry to hyjack thread

Op do you have face pain too?

DaftMaul · 17/04/2012 09:42

I second the NeilMed nasal rinse spray. This was advised by ds' ENT consultant to treat his constant blocked nose caused by allergies. He also has a steroid spray but I think the nasal wash has made more difference.

Also, ibuprofen as this is an anti-inflammatory.

chipmunksex · 17/04/2012 10:25

This has gone off on tangent a bit hasn't it?

No I don't have any pain, which is surprising as I am pretty prone to sinusitus.

I think it's getting a bit better (ie when I sniff I don't get so much mucus in the back of my throat that I think I'm going to suffocateEnvy)

I might try the saline thingie though, thanks for that. Grin

Do you have fizzy drinks?

chipmunksex · 17/04/2012 10:50

Me?

No, I do not have fizzy drinks. Confused

OP posts:
DaftMaul · 17/04/2012 10:56

Ibuprofen not for pain but to try to reduce the inflammation in the nasal passage.

chipmunksex · 17/04/2012 10:58

Ibuprofen's a good idea; except I'm not supposed to have it, it messes with my stomach. annoying.

OP posts:
DaftMaul · 17/04/2012 11:06

Ginger is also supposed to have anti inflammatory properties.

Hebiegebies · 17/04/2012 17:17

That's another thing you can't cut out then chipmunk Grin
