I am fed up with constantly being cold? Anyone else seriously cold blooded and could share coping strategies?

I've just had to put the heating on again. I'm wearing jeans, socks ugg boot type slippers, a tshirt and a fleecy too and I have goose pimples and am shivering.

Is anyone else constantly cold to the point your muscles actually stiffen up and you feel like you cannot move?

I'm so fed up with being the only one wearing a jacket when everyone else is in tshirts. I sleep with a normal king sized duvet and a single one over my side of the bed. Most nights if I'm watching tv I'm under a duvet as well.

DP is always warm hence loads of arguments about having the heating on. I'm fed up shivering all the time.

Have you had your thyroid and iron levels checked

nethunsreject · 16/04/2012 13:12

Agree with Fanny - get them checked.

Are you skinny? I am skinny at the moment and feel cold a lot of the time. I have long johns under my jeans! Ditto thermal vests!

LoopyLoopsTootTootToots · 16/04/2012 13:13

Me too. Sitting here with massive blanket.

My strategy? I'm emigrating soon!

sweetkitty · 16/04/2012 13:15

I wouldn't say I'm really skinny about a size 10.

Had iron and thyroid checked a lot as I'm always tired too (but have 4 DC)

I live in Scotland as well although I think I'm not supposed to.

I feel the cold a lot too, we have an electric blanket that has separate controls so I don't get cold in bed (I use it most of the year!). Also if I'm round the house I wear a scarf - a thin one not a huge woolly thing, but I find if my neck is warm then my shoulders are more relaxed so I tend to seize up less.
I have been known (when working from home and stationary for a lot of the day) to have a hot water bottle under each foot.... Blush

2ombie5layer · 16/04/2012 13:19

Sounds just like me OP. Im always cold and tired. Ive had my thyroid and iron levels checked and nothing abnormal was to be found. I think its just the way we are. Im certainly not underweight, infact I need to lose a stone or two in order to be the right weight for me.

I find it worse when other people around me are warm. I used to sit next to a warm blooded person who would often insist of having the window behind me open at work. I always wear thermal underwear and socks.

amillionyears · 16/04/2012 13:20

Do you have low blood pressure?
Are you starting the menopause?

AspirinDonkeys · 16/04/2012 13:22

It is freezing cold!

If your bloods etc are fine then try wearing wool tights or those merino long johns from climbing shops as an underlayer and trousers on top.

And a vest. Old fashioned, yes but it really is Baltic just now.

sweetkitty · 16/04/2012 13:22

No to both

I've always been like it Grin

I'm like this too. My answer is loads of layers. Today I have on a vest type top a long sleeved t shirt and a woolly jumper, jeans woolly socks and slippers. I also have a scarf on. If my neck is warm I feel much warmer!

Jellyrollgumdrop · 16/04/2012 13:24

sounds just like me! its blinking freezing atm & my nose wont stop running, just popping out to get firelighters to get the fire lit! then ill be ontop of it the rest of the day!

MrsTractor · 16/04/2012 13:25

Layers are the answer.

I feel the cold a lot and the best way to keep warm is lots of thin layers. So today I am wearing a thin cotton camisole/vest top (tucked into my trousers - this bit is crucial, it's amazing how much warmer you feel with it tucked in), then a long sleeved cotton t-shirt, then a cashmere jumper over the top.

I also find it makes a big difference if my neck is warm so I usually wear a pashmina round my neck.

I make sure that I wear socks with my slippers too, stops the draughts around your ankles.

Natural materials are the best at regulating your temperature too.

And finally, never underestimate the power of a hot drink to warm you up when you're sat still at home/work.

Roll on the warmer months! Grin

Cross posts with QuickLookBusy - great minds think alike!

CrispyHedgehog · 16/04/2012 13:26

I'm always cold... I've been known in summer to go sit in the sweltering car just for a bit of a warm, lol. Lots of layers, electric blanket, loads of hot drinks. I also find a hot bath seems to help for a while.

My iron is very low though, due to have infusions soon and I really hope that helps.

2ombie5layer · 16/04/2012 13:27

More often than not I have soup for lunch too.

I insist on keeping my shoes on around my house (wouldnt do it at someone elses though) as I find them warmer than slippers.

Earthymama · 16/04/2012 13:34

I am exactly the same.
I am wearing velvet leggings. camisole, long sleeved top, short sleeved tunic, thin fleece, sweatshirt, wooly socks, slipper clogs.
I am freezing cold!!
Just going to put on another layer and turn up the heating.
Fill up hot water bottle.
Sit on sofa under furry throw.

I wear winter clothes for far longer thanm everyone else around me.

When I see people in flipflops and shorts on days that find me wearing boots, scarf and clothes I feel cold on their behalf.

I have had iron and thyroid checks but no answers there.

Should we meet up? We can be the only ones in Hat, Gloves and Scarf combos!!

I agree about scarves, if my neck is cosy I feel much warmer.

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 16/04/2012 13:43

I'm the same. There seems to be an always-cold gene running down the female line in my family.

Have you discovered the M&S thermal lingerie range?

Casablancagirl · 16/04/2012 13:47

Drink lots of milk and use a hot water bottle, always, cart it around with you.....my partner is aghast I am still sleeping with one, and a 13.5 duvat, and a blanket, and a cashmere cardy.....and him.

BirdyBedtime · 16/04/2012 13:48

I'm exactly like this too - and I have an overactive thyroid! The other day the thermostat was reading 19 which is the temp we have the heating set at, but I was wearing jeans, vest top, thin jumper, fleecy top and scarf - was just about OK.

I put it down to the warm weather at the end of March - my body thinks it should be summer!

Ditto the scarf wearing - I am often to be found in the house with a scarf on - it drives DH bonkers but it's true that it does make you feel warmer.

In the summer even on a really warm day as soon as it gets even a little bit cooler I have to put on at least a cardigan, but more usually a fleece. I do get some strange looks on holiday.

ihatethecold · 16/04/2012 13:55

I have the same problem. It gets me down at work. I sit there freezing whilst my colleague(man) is warm.
I was told its my circulation. If i can properly get it going then im ok. But i drive to work so no chance to warm up properly. Then i freeze all morning! Brrr

Lizcat · 16/04/2012 14:57

I feel the cold a lot I'm the one wearing a cardi in 40C in the Middle East. I find that keeping moving is the most important thing getting out for a brisk walk at least once per day, lots of layers and fingerless gloves.

sweetkitty · 16/04/2012 15:31

It does get you down though, it's actually painful being do cold all the time. Its the seizing up thing to, i thought i was the only one who felt like it.

With me, its after I eat - especially lunch. Within seconds of eating, I am a quivering shivering frozen wreck.

I guess the blood goes to my stomach or something Blush but I'm sure I didn't feel the cold like this when I was younger!

shockers · 16/04/2012 16:35

I'm fine as long as I keep my kidneys and neck warm... so vests and scarves unless it's the height of summer!

chipmunksex · 16/04/2012 20:25

Thermals, layers, hot water bottles, hot drinks and so on, but getting moving really helps.

I hate housework and dodge it as much as I can, but hoovering is very good for warming up the bones.

Or go for a walk-when you get back you'll feel much better.
