Thread #2 on the subject of my breast! Anyone know anything about augmentin/flucloxacillin and what happens when they don't work?!

fastasleep · 05/02/2006 21:07

Look in breast/bottle feeding and you'll find a complete saga about my breast... anyway the short story is...

Came down with fever, big red lines all over breast, went to hospital, got fobbed off, got given augmentin, augmentin didn't work, went back, got very fobbed off, got given flucloxacillin, seemed to work, got one day left of tablets now and the red lines are beginning to come back...

What now?

I'm asking you rather than going to the docs because I need to be armed with info on ABs as last time I was prescribed SUDOCREM by some absolute arse of a doctor when I blatently had a raging infection (lyphangitis type thing)

fa - have no idea what to suggest, sounds painful though, sorry hun.

mummytosteven · 05/02/2006 21:15

oh hell! have not got the faintest idea but bump in the hope that one of our MN medics/nurses can give words of wisdom!

fastasleep · 05/02/2006 21:15

It's not actually too painful right now, but I just hate my stupid stupid breast!

Bet it will hurt by tomorrow though [fed up now emoticon]

OP posts:
fastasleep · 05/02/2006 21:16

Don't worry I'm just...fuming... GRR! That's all lol

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 05/02/2006 21:16

Oh, FA! I'm so sorry you're suffering like this - and not getting help from the doctor

Are you in pain now?

Can you go to the GP tomorrow? Hopefully Mears or Tiktok will see this before then and you'll have better info by then. Am very and at the doctor who said sudocrem - tosser!

Hope you're better very soon - you're a marvel, FA, honestly.

mummytosteven · 05/02/2006 21:17

deffo try and see the GP - as the hospital docs haven't exactly covered themselves in glory dealing with this.....

fastasleep · 05/02/2006 21:17

I'm going to the doc on Tuesday, DH will be at home, DS has a scan at the hospital tomorrow and I have to buy my 1.50 charity shop thing for our Ebay competition thing, MTS you should do that too!

I just know I'll get fobbed off again and I can't just say 'change my ABs' cos I'm not even sure there are any others they can give for this!

.

chapsmum · 05/02/2006 21:54

fastasleep are youstill brest feeding??
Aumentin is a form of penicillin and if this didnt fluclox is very unlikely too.
Do you have a temp?
Is the redness getting worse?
How many doses of antibiotics have you taken?
are you allergic to any antibiotics?
Sorry for all questions but could perhaps suggest a few other antibiotics....

fastasleep · 05/02/2006 21:58

Still breastfeeding (well, expressing exclusively), redness was bad there where 5 streaks down my breast but these tabs seemed to work now one line has started up and is getting worse (this is how it began the last times)... it's beginning to ache a little, I don't feel feverish yet (which I did before, but it takes a little while aftee rthe lines start) can't check temp atm because have lost thermometer! I've taken 6 days out of a 7 day course of flucloxicillin 500mg 4 times a day after taking Augmenting for 7 days at 650mg 3 times a day...

OP posts:
fastasleep · 05/02/2006 22:00

Well either I'm tired or geting my fever back because that was garbled to hell! Lol (think it's just tiredness)

spacecadet · 05/02/2006 22:00

fastasleep, if 2 lots of abs are not working, you may need blood tests done to define the type of bacteria in your body so that you can be prescribed an ab which is effective in killing that particular type of bacteria or they may decide to give you one more weeks worth of flucloxacillin.
do you have a temperature again?
how do you feel in yourself?

fastasleep · 05/02/2006 22:03

Roots out thermometer I just feel knackered, totally knackered...have done since I got it the first time (except for when I was feverish and hyper)

bloods? WAH!

I'm only 36.4 so no fever yet...why would the red lines go and then come back? [confused emoticon!]

OP posts:
chapsmum · 05/02/2006 22:05

Sorry if this repeating advice, but exclusivly expressing may just be making the prob worse?? AM sure the bfeading gurus will help with that one.
If you are not unwell in yourself and dont have a temperature then blood cultures, to see what the bacteria is would prob not show anything...

If you feel the prob is getting worse you need to see your gp tommorrow, you could ask for a course of erythromycin.

spacecadet · 05/02/2006 22:05

the red lines may be returning because the abs arent strong enough to knock the infection completely on the head.

mummytosteven · 05/02/2006 22:07

How's the nipple itself btw?

fastasleep · 05/02/2006 22:14

Nipple is red but not 'open'... thought it was healing nicely ... I can't do anything except exclusively express so no getting out of that one really...

erythromycin right! Will remember that one when the Gp sits there umming and arring and muttering sudocrem

OP posts:
mummytosteven · 05/02/2006 22:15

could you face up to doing some handexpressing as ?Mears recommended on t'other thread?

spacecadet · 05/02/2006 22:18

amoxycillin is another ab, which is a broad spectrum ab which will kill many diff types of bacteria and although a tiny bit does get into breastmilk, is safe to use.
cephalexin is another you might like to ask about.

fastasleep · 05/02/2006 22:18

Yep can do, but it seems healed, just pink looking, on closer inspection... oh I do hate talking about my nipples! You wouldn't think I did would you with all these threads!

OP posts:
fastasleep · 05/02/2006 22:19

Yikes what a lot of ABs... have had amoxycillin a lot before in my youth for urine infections... will list them down and say 'gimme one of these damn you!'

OP posts:
spacecadet · 05/02/2006 22:24

yep amoxicillin is abroad spectrum ab so tends to be prescribed a lot where they are unsure which bacteria is causing it.

Aero · 05/02/2006 22:24

When I had mastitis (and I had it loads with bf ds2), it took two courses of flucoxicillan before it got better and even then I still had this tiny greenish fleck which refused to go even after two courses. In the end I was prescribed antibiotic cream (Fucidine) which I could apply locally and funally after what seemed like forever, it cleared up. HTH. Failing that, you could be prescribed an AB ehich is an alternative to penicillan, possibly erythromycin.

Not related, but ds1 is currently being treated for a chest infection which amoxycillan didn't clear properly. He's now on clarithromycin and finally he's well on the road to complete recovery, so a change in ABs could be all that's needed. Hope you are better soon though - I totally sympathise.

chapsmum · 05/02/2006 22:25

sudocreme! the cheek!
Have no idea about the sutability with b feeding but perhaps a poultice, yes a poultice! would help to draw the infection. mag sulph has workin in the past, space cadet might have a reccomendation from surgical ward...
Alternatively, if there are any open parts silver sulphazide/flamazine has topical antibiotic properties. Hydrogen peroxide is also good.
Fast asleep these are ideas you would need to discuss with your dr as Im not sure what is suitable with b feeding, but if your dumping the milk fromt that boob I dont see why not...
Anyway the above are effective ways of drawing a wound like the one you discribed hth
