...or am I just a glutton?!

Im fairly active (lots of walking to/from school, plus a run or two a week, plus Im a childminder so lots of carrying/lifting etc) but Im also about a stone overweight so not starving myself clearly!

So why am I always hungry given that I am most definitely not wasting away?

Habit?
Try drinking water when you feel hungry, maybe you are thirsty.

Are you really hungry or just picky?

EssentialFattyAcid · 22/03/2012 19:30

your fat gene is switched on
in 5 or 10 years time we will tell you how to switch it off
until then you will be fat or struggling not to be
that is all
don't blame y'self

Gravity1 · 22/03/2012 19:31

Feels real to me!! Habit most likely an issue too tho - at home alot, so lots of tea and toast/biccy etc.

did you see that prog last night?
Thin gene people feel hungry and then feel full
Fat gene people never feel massively hungry but are never ever full

Gravity1 · 22/03/2012 19:32

Eeek EFA! Obesity a big issue in my family, would rather not go that way so do need to stop the rot - hard when Im hungry all the time!

EssentialFattyAcid · 22/03/2012 19:32

basically i dont think you are hungry all the time just that you never feel full

Gravity1 · 22/03/2012 19:33

Didnt see it, sounds depressing...

I started feeling hungry all the time when I was developing a stomach ulcer (I didn't know that's what was happening at the time!). It was the excess stomach acid I think.

threeleftfeet · 22/03/2012 19:37

It got worse over time until it became a pain when I was hungry. Took a while to get there though (months).

JustOneMoreQuestion · 22/03/2012 19:40

Definitely drink more water. The body can often mistake thirst for hunger. And keeping propeerly hydrated is so important for health AND can help the body to use stored fat as an energy source.

And if a cup of tea HAS to have biscuits with it, limit the amount of brews you drink, and instead go for water or fruit juice.

Have something on standby for when you feel bored and interpret it is hunger - do some sit ups or squats or step ups

MrFluffy · 22/03/2012 19:41

Pill? I recently started taking it and was constantly starving. In a self control out of the window way!

Gravity1 · 22/03/2012 19:43

Hmm yes, dont drink much water I have to say.

An ulcer? Sounds grim. Hope all is well now threeleftfeet.

I wonder what you're eating. Whether it's too low in protein or fat, for instance.

Not sleeping enough makes me overeat. Something to do with Leptin, I think.

Gravity1 · 22/03/2012 19:45

Oh, actually yes, I have recently started the pill Mr Fluffy.

Mind you was a stone over weight before that Blush

Wierd, cant recall if the hunger thing pre-dates the pill or if it actually is more recent. Think perhaps it is worse lately.

I eat all the time if I am dehydrated, and also when I am tired and I think i can make myself feel better with a nice Haribo hit.

I know that really I need a pint of water and go to bed, but hey ho!

Well ragged I did wonder that too. I am a bit of a carb queen. What do folks have for brekkie that isnt carb based tho? Im porridge or toast. And lunch - soup and bread, or a sandwich. All seems carb heavy but not sure what else to have. Im veggie and not doing it right I fear.

How much protein are you eating? If you're eating mostly carby stuff you will feel hungry a lot. You need to be eating 20g protein 3 x a day really as a minimum depending on your weight. More if you do a lot of exercise.

Also tiredness can make you hungry, as can anaemia (you feel you need to eat to get more energy).

Gravity1 · 22/03/2012 20:00

Cant get the link to work JustOneMoreQuestion, but will investigate further later, thanks.

Im not sure how much protein I get I hate to admit. I will have a look the next couple of days.

Tiredness - story of my life for the last 5 years (early rising DCs) but hopefully that wont go on forever. Please...

You could try a couple of boiled eggs or a quick omelette in the mornings. I find that if I can get to lunchtime without eating chocolate carbs then I'm ok for the rest of the day, otherwise it's downhill all the way!

I'm also about a stone overweight and came off the contraceptive injection (which I think caused some of the weight gain) onto the pill and last week I was famished!

ragged · 22/03/2012 20:06

Fruit for breakfast, the fibre may make it more filling than simpler carbs, too. Porridge can be high in protein if you make it with milk, so not merely carbs.

I strongly suspect most vegetarians eat way too many carbs & not enough fruit+veg. It's kind of fascinating to me; I eat way more veg since I started eating meat again. (was veggie for 15 yrs but didn't actually eat much veg, like most others I know/knew).

Veg soup for lunch? And heaps of veg with whatever else you have for tea.

Sleep deprivation link to obesity.

CutMyEggs · 22/03/2012 21:46

I also am a stone overweight, always ravenous and a carb craving veggy. Am thinking of doing slimfast or some such diet to stop me stuffing myself with stodge!

brighthair · 23/03/2012 03:26

Protein, protein and some more Grin
Plus lots of water
Eggs for breakfast? Sometimes I swap to an omelette instead
Try and keep your sugar intake low too. Something like full fat yoghurt (check sugar content) with some crushed nuts and berries will keep you fuller for longer
Think volume too - soup is filling as you have the water+veg. Make a big batch and have it through the day if you need to - I love cauliflower cheese soup Wink
