Spent last two days in bed/throwing up with suspected food poisoning (self diagnosis). Have drunk litre of This Water diluted with um water (threw back up), half a litre of generic Tesco Lucozade. Eaten two Muller Corners (threw one back up). Think the puking has finished now but wondering what I should be eating/drinking to make myself better quicker. Am still shivery/achy/weak but think part of that is lying in bed for two days and not eating! Any tips v welcome.

Ice pops work a treat.

SparkyMcSparrow · 09/03/2012 19:38

Water, water, water!

Even if you throw it up, some of it gets through! Must try and stay hydrated!

SparkyMcSparrow · 09/03/2012 19:38

And Berocca!

catmadcaz · 09/03/2012 19:43

Make a glass of ribena add large pinch salt. My gp said it is as good as rehydration sachets and it is what she uses!

DitaVonCheese · 09/03/2012 19:46

Bother, don't have Berocca. I have Dioralyte and frozen fromage frais?

OP posts:
SparkyMcSparrow · 09/03/2012 19:49

Why not Berocca? Its my cure for everything Grin

Is it secretly really bad?

DitaVonCheese · 09/03/2012 20:16

Oh no, just meant I don't have any in the house! Wish I had some fizzy vit tablets though, they were fab back in the day when I had to deal with monster hangovers (which is more or less how I've been treating this).

SparkyMcSparrow · 09/03/2012 20:18

Oops didn't realise you were the OP even though I have it highlighted

Very relived that no one is knocking my Berocca! Grin

LadySybilDeChocolate · 09/03/2012 20:19

Wait until it stops coming out, then yakult will be your friend. Don't eat anything yet, just clear fluids and dioralyte, small amounts just often. Once you've stopped vomiting then you can try some food. Any idea where you've caught it from? Environmental health need to be contacted if it's a cafe/takeaway etc.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

DashingRedhead · 09/03/2012 20:22

I'd avoid dairy. Clear soup with dry toast. Loads of water. I like the ribena and salt tip - probably tastes nicer than dioralyte!

DitaVonCheese · 09/03/2012 20:28

Sybil how do you tell where you caught it from? I can't think of anything I've eaten that DH/DC haven't (apart from massive quantities of Sainsbury's choc brownies that I had hidden Blush). I am blaming a Tesco Finest cheddar and asparagus filo parcel as it's the last thing I ate before the floodgates opened (and I ate some raw filo off the top ) but DH had the other one and is fine.

OP posts:
DitaVonCheese · 09/03/2012 20:29

Oh, I had a sneaky choc doughnut in Sainsbury's too (anyone notice a theme? Blush)

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 09/03/2012 20:31

I feel your pain. Both DH and I were up all night with a sickness bug. I have been drinking ribena all day and the first thing I ate were some hoolahoops, as I remember them helping with morning sickness. Had some pasta for dinner and feeling vaguely more human now.

I always feel the need for sugar and salt when hungover, so tried that approach (although minus my usual hangover cure of burger king!)

Hope you feel better soon

LadySybilDeChocolate · 09/03/2012 20:32

Do you have any left overs in the fridge? It takes around 6 hours for it to make you ill so what did you eat around 6 hours before? I've had food poisoning, it didn't last 2 days though; abdominal cramps, fever and chills, huge amount of vomiting and the trots. I felt like crap for a while afterwards though.

RatDesPaquerettes · 09/03/2012 20:39

Flat normal coke clears your insides when you are being ill.

As already mentioned above:

Once you feel up to eating, plain food would be best: soup, toast, plain rice (with a bit of butter on top for taste)...

Eventually, est some yoghurt/yakult to boost your healthy bacteria again.

SparkyMcSparrow · 09/03/2012 20:42

I second the flat full fat coke.

I read it on here a while ago then had a bad stomach. It worked!

DitaVonCheese · 09/03/2012 21:10

Guttingly, we have no flat coke, as that actually was the last thing I consumed. Meh.

I've had D&V, chills, aches, lots of belching. Gassiness/belching came first, about midnight, vomiting started about 3 am. Finest readymeal consumed about 9 pm. Does that sound about right?

Trying to think what else I ate that day. Fruit + cereal for breakfast, choc doughnut in shops, ham/cheese/tomato sauce (homemade, not ketchup!) sandwich made with hmm rather old tortilla wraps now I come to thing of it (can bread harbour food poisoning? It always seems so benign), choc brownies throughout day, DC had fishfingers, frozen fromage frais, broad beans, French beans and I had bits of that as well, then DH and I had Finest meal at 9 (date night! - not a success this week).

I've had a Dioralyte and a chilled banana.

OP posts:
LadySybilDeChocolate · 09/03/2012 22:15

If DH wasn't ill then it's not likely to be the Finest meal. Food poisoning is evil and will get everyone. Could possibly be the ham.

DitaVonCheese · 09/03/2012 22:29

DS had some of the ham - but is BLWed so didn't so much consume it as play with it then drop it. Do I need to tell anyone about the skanky ham? Sure it wasn't the raw filo? I've been wondering if it was painted with egg to help it brown up or something. Back to bed now I think ...

A nice cup of tea with sugar and not too much milk, and a packet of ready salted crisps to pick at.

LadySybilDeChocolate · 09/03/2012 22:52

It's very hard to say to be honest. Your GP can arrange for a sample of your poop to be tested so they can isolate the offending bug. The last thing you need is eColi. It may be a good idea to give NHS direct a call.

DashingRedhead · 10/03/2012 00:41

It could actually be a bug. If you're feign shivery, gastric flu. Just take it all v gently. They're horrendous.

DashingRedhead · 10/03/2012 00:42

That should be feeling not feign. Gah!

startail · 10/03/2012 02:19

Coke and crisps!
Having eaten very dodgy prawn soup in Majorca I can assure you it works. Majorcan ham crisps are yummy which helps.
Tthen bland sandwiches or toast (plastic ham and white bread etc, the sort DD2 would choose).

Tea with caution, milk does not necessarily help, likewise yoghurt or cereal with too much milk.

And rest, I just slept under a palm tree for a whole day.

DitaVonCheese · 10/03/2012 08:02

Thanks for all the suggestions. Have woken up feeling much better but with the mother of all headaches so currently drinking watered down orange juice.

Dashing the thing that makes me think it's not a bug is that no one else I know is ill and no one in the house has caught it off me.

About to have my first cup of tea. Very excited Grin
