Bit too skinny, may have to take my rings off.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 01/03/2012 16:38

I need some 'really gentle on the tummy' ways to at least keep my weight on at the moment please. I realised I was getting a bit too skinny when my rings flew off today when I was waving my hand about. (took quite a time to find them)

Weight has been sliding off a little bit over the past month or so, I've not been very well. Last week I went onto meds that are really upsetting my tummy despite omeprazole. even a cup of decaf tea makes it sore. So I am having to force myself to eat small meals, but they clearly arent enough to keep my weight up.

If it carries on I'll go and see my gp, but is there anything really easy to digest in the mean time that tastes nice - like complan only not disgusting. I'm not sure if I can take supplements as everything seems to be contraindicated on this med.

Also, while you are at it cures for med induced insomnia/nightmares would be great please.

Poor you. What about things like hot chocolate/horlicks made with full fat milk? Or rice pudding made the same way, with a dollop of cream and butter in for good measure? Egg custard? Mashed potato with cream & butter?

My dd2 is very tiny (think of pictures of starving children and don't assume I'm exaggerating) and doesn't eat all that much. I have to constantly think of ways to increase the calorie value of the small amount she does eat! Everything that I can I add cream/butter to I do and I never ever buy low fat versions of anything.

As for the reflux (which I assume is bothering you from the description) I can only sympathise. I suffer from time to time and had 2 dcs with severe reflux including ds2 who is on lots of meds now. It's rubbish.

Hope you're feeling better soon - you normally sound much chirpier than this Sad

BoysAreLikeDogs · 02/03/2012 14:11
Sad

tiny coffee cups of soup, plain mash, can you tolerate butter? what about some quail eggs to make a teeny omlette? you don't want to be faced with a large plate of food

Just to cheer you up, OYBBK, I saw a sundog the other week, it was AMAZING

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/03/2012 14:25

I posted a reply and I lost it :(

I'll try the hot chocolate, I could maybe have it at bedtime and see how it goes. It might help me sleep too. I've not noticed any foods setting it off but I dont fancy things like fruit.

It seems to be lower down than reflux - feels all hot and bothered lower down and just sore. But I expect it is probably acid. I might phone the gp and ask if I can double the omeprazole.

buttonmoon - your dd sounds like she must worry you. How old is she?

I'm waiting for an appt with my cardiologist who is going to talk about some sort of ablation which should sort out my issue so that I dont need medication. This one is really mean and I can only stay on it a short while as the longer you are on it, the more damaging it is likely to be. He seems to think I've run out of drug options. I'll hopefully be happier when I know the time frame.

I know I musnt feel sorry for myself, theres worse things at sea and all that but I'm really struggling.

BALD - how beautiful they are pretty special :)

BoysAreLikeDogs · 02/03/2012 14:31

it must be horrible you poor thing, so what if worse things happen at sea, this is happening to you, and you are entitled feel sorry for yourself x x x

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/03/2012 14:34

if you are too nice to me I will cry and then where will I be (other than soggy).
Thanks BALD.

Of course there are worse things at sea, but it doesn't mean you can't feel sorry for yourself!

DD is nearly 12. She was average weight when born but steadily became tinier and tinier. By the time she was 8 she didn't feature on the red book charts - she doesn't actually exist! She's a little under average height but so tiny I have to take her clothes in. Her knees are bigger than her thighs which are smaller than my forearms (I'm a size 14 so not like I have mega big momma arms or anything!). Things like knee socks simply fall down. She still wears age 7-8 pants.

I think that she views food as fuel rather than something to be enjoyed which is an utterly alien concept to me Grin. She often eats a few mouthfuls and then isn't hungry anymore, but then is again an hour later, so also a grazer.

I wouldn't worry so much - after all, there's no such thing as normal - if she was well with it. But if she has a bug, the other dcs are all up and about demanding bacon butties within hours, but it knocks her all week. She developed shingles last week which is probably because she's run down through not eating enough.

I've tried everything. She drives me nuts and it's hard not to turn your worry into anger over her not eating. I worry about her now, especially with the shingles etc. But I also worry about her future. Will she ever have periods? If she wants them, will she ever be able to have children? I also worry that by making a 'thing' out of it (no matter how hard I try not to, I'm sure it is) will I drive her into a full blown eating disorder?

Sorry about the hijack. I do worry, but I try not to let it show too much. I don't want to scare her or the other dcs and I don't let DH see it as her eating makes him cross too and he's not as good as hiding it as me. Which only makes her worse Sad

buttonmoon78 · 02/03/2012 14:46

You sound like me. Give me anything but sympathy! At least if people are sympathetic on here it means I can cry in the privacy of my own home. In RL there's no escape!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/03/2012 15:33

dont worry about the hijack. I really feel for you and your dd. It is easy for worry to turn to anger, especially because you really dont know what is going on in their heads. I think it can be very hard for non-eaters to restart to enjoy food and I can imagine how you have tried everything. I've been looking at ensure drinks. Are they something that are helpful for her or not? has her gp been helpful?

buttonmoon78 · 02/03/2012 16:59

Not at all, just says to do what we're already doing and to increase the variety of foods. But that's not the problem - she eats a wide variety, just not much of it! She's very adventurous - eats olives, mussels, prawns, curry, you name it, just tiny amounts. While she's relatively healthy they're not bothered which I suppose I should take as a positive.

I've not heard of those. She turned her nose up at complan but anything's worth a try. After the complan failure I made sure that there's always loads of milk in and she'll drink that with Nesquik chocolate powder. Also, she'll enjoy eggs so I encourage her to have boiled eggs for breakfast. Once she even ate two!

Mollydoggerson · 02/03/2012 17:11

My ds1 used to be a very bad eater. I used to give him those meal replacement drinks (not for dieters), but for people who are recovering from surgery/malnutrition. You can get them in pharmacies, I'm not sure if they are on perscription or not. My mum had some spare, so used to give them to me.

They are like milk shakes and have all the nutrition you need in them. They used to nod my ds1 right off to sleep as well.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/03/2012 17:12

The two egg day must have been momentous Grin

ensure bloody expensive though, but might be worth a try? If you do can I have feedback please?
Maybe you could ask for a referral to a nutritionist. I dont know if it would make things worse or better.

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/03/2012 17:13

oh interesting that they helped your ds Molly. Sounds worth considering actually.

OP posts:

crikey theres loads of different replacement drinks I had no idea!

OP posts:
buttonmoon78 · 02/03/2012 18:02

Been already. Sorry this is drip feeding - wasn't about me originally!

She is intolerant of wholewheat but it took a couple of years of excluding things before we knew this so spent a long time with chronic squits.

Also, she spent the first 4 years of her life with back to back tonsilitis so I reckon some of it is psychological - she really used to struggle with dairy as it is quite mucous inducing . This is why I have to sneak it in - she still won't tolerate butter in butties!

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/03/2012 20:09

it does sound like a complicated set of events that set this off. I really hope that you both find some answers.
so not coeliac then?
dont worry about the thread drift :)

OP posts:
buttonmoon78 · 02/03/2012 21:12

No, def not coeliac. Nor allergic to anything. Just intolerant to wholewheat so it's rice pops and frosties all the way and white bread butties for school etc. She managed a whole slice of brown bread the other day and was ok, but pushed it with a spoonful or two of shreddies and regretted it for two days!

DS1 is also intolerant, but much more so. School is a nightmare with him as when they do things like bake bread, the curriculum dictates they should be using wholewheat flour as its healthier.

And as for DS2? Well, he's just a nightmare! We've not had him tested yet (that's next week's joy) but it seems like he's allergic to dairy, apples, pears, bananas, possibly onions and not sure about wheat as it seemed like a longer lead in to the reaction. All the others were immediate or within a couple of hours. Thankfully not egg so at least I can keep baking cakes and biscuits using soya instead of dairy.

It's laugh a minute at our house, I tell you! Wink

what a handful you have - life must be an exercise in creativity.

ohyoubadbadkitten Sad!awwwww

ive used the shakes to put on weight.didnt stay on them for long as it was an extra thing to buy that we couldnt afford but they dont taste too bad!

hope you get sorted soon

ohyouBadBadkitten · 02/03/2012 22:14

they are astonishingly expensive cheesesarnie. I kind of fancy icecream, which although are not nutritious do have calories. I could buy really posh ones for the price of one of those drinks. I am looking forward to being sorted and being back to normal. Usually nothing stops me.

buttonmmon, just realised that my post could be read wrong - I didnt mean it sarcastically but genuinely.

but can sympathise with wanting to put on weight.

do the doctors have any ideas?apologies if youve said and ive missed it.

Naoko · 02/03/2012 22:32

Hi kitten, I don't know if this would work for you because of the medical problems, but when I was an undergrad I lived with a girl who, for the best part of our second year, could barely keep food down. Doctors never worked out what the problem was but she was constantly nauseous and had upset/painful stomachs. She also couldn't cook to save her life so I ended up taking her under my wing a bit and cooking her dinner; we found that the easiest things for her to eat and actually digest/keep down without it hurting her were blandish, non oily things, a lot of simple carbs and protein. Things like mashed potato with grilled chicken breast, cooked with just a little salt and pepper for flavour rather than sauce or spicy coating, or noodles with some stir fried meat and green veg. For breakfast and lunch she usually had a bagel with some soft cheese, or eggs and toast. I don't know if that would help you at all? I know it's not really comparable (her issues eventually went away on their own) but she was at least managing to eat some and not lose too much weight that way.
