Oh just great, I've got Glandular Fever....

Have been feeling rubbish for a few weeks, had a dodgy liver function test so they ran some more and told me last night that I have glandular fever (how teenaged of me). So 2 weeks off work for starters then another test to see if it's gone away.

Anyone had it and have any advice. Obv I can't just sit on the sofa all day with a 14 month old baby!

Poor you CD. Make sure you look after yourself as this can be a bugger to recover from. How about a little break to relax and recharge?

Take Care

No suggestions CD but full of sympathy for you!

All i know is if you do not rest accordingly it can have long term knock on effects - my brother suffered from Glandular Fever about 7/8 years ago and has never really been 100% since.
Obviously he has receovered from the general symptoms but now gets every bug known to man!

Hope you feel better soon

CountessDracula · 20/11/2003 12:37

Oooh yes, will start a begging thread called "who wants to chip in to send CD to Grenada for a week!" Yes yes yes!

OP posts:
Jemma7 · 20/11/2003 12:41

Doubt you will have to put it on hold CD but might be worth bearing in mind that you may feel really rough as aposed to slightly rough if you do concieve

That's if you feel up to BD'ing at all!

motherinferior · 20/11/2003 12:50

I can only recommend my standard remedy of Cake.

handlemecarefully · 20/11/2003 13:02

Look on the bright side - excellent lever to get dp / dh (if you have one) to do their fair share around the home and with childcare for once!

Here's to a speedy recovery for you

katierocket · 20/11/2003 13:06

poor you - that's grim. do you have anyone - mum or inlaws that could give you a rest. does your little one go to nursery or childminder?

oliveoil · 20/11/2003 13:07

I have it on good authority that you must not catch up on ironing/housework if you have 2 weeks off work and in fact can be incarcerated (sp?) for getting your arse off the settee.

Dh/dp BY LAW must provide warm beverages and/or booze on demand and leave laptop in close proximity to said patient for 'research' on mumsnet. Hourly logging in required.

Have also heard of CAKE remedy as per MI rec.

marthamoo · 20/11/2003 13:09

Poor you, CountessD..hugs and sympathy. I would say this is an occasion when parenting by video (stick one on, lie on sofa, make occasional encouraging noises at small child) is entirely warranted. Get some multi-vits, drink plenty of fluids, sleep as much as possible.

WSM · 20/11/2003 13:10

NO SNOGGING BEHIND THE BIKE SHEDS

Ooops sorry, didn't mean to shout !

WSM · 20/11/2003 13:14

Give her to the nanny and lie on aforementioned sofa stuffing your face with delicious handmade chocs

Enid · 20/11/2003 13:14

Elderberry extract (sold by Solgar vitamins) is brilliant for fighting the virus - I had it years ago and still get 'flare-ups' when I feel terribly tired and have sore throats, massive glands, feel low etc. I always load up on it and it seems to help.

Poor you x E

janh · 20/11/2003 13:14

Agree with all previous advice - especially videos and cake.

Also lots of fresh orange juice and Vit C.

And nap when baby does. Bit like having a newborn really.

Hope you feel better soon.

princesspeahead · 20/11/2003 13:24

Poor you! I've had it. My advice -
sleep sleep sleep sleep sleep sleep sleep. I mean bedtime at 8pm sort of sleep.
And I wouldn't anticipate being back in the office before Jan if I were you - definitely one of those things where if you do too much too soon it takes AGES to fully go away which is particularly the last thing you want if you are ttc this year....

Look on it as an enforced restful holiday at home?!

princesspeahead · 20/11/2003 13:25

ps flights to and hotels in the w indies are DEAD CHEAP in late Nov/early December - take the draculette and go!

yoko · 20/11/2003 13:50

poor you.i had gf about 18 mnths ago,and i agree with gemma7,you really do need to rest rest rest,i didnt(not properly, was brought up by a family that dont give in to illness and have bizarre guilt feelings etc)anyhow,i am not properly recovered even now.i get so terribly tired and swollen glands really quite often.i know you have a child, but you do have day time help so please take advantage of this-in the long run it benefits whole family, elderberry extract gets my vote too.

sunchowder · 20/11/2003 13:50

POOR YOU CD!! I know I always say the same things but...I would go to see an herbologist or acupuncture physician (not that you have to get the needles), they can recommend herbs which are fantastic for these things, elderberry is great as mentioned. Lonicera Complex made by Evergreen would probably be great also. A few visits to the cranio-osteo would also help alot in rebalancing your system so that you can get stronger faster and have much deeper, healing sleep. I LOVE the CAKE idea too. PPP has it right when she says to take off through December. You have been working so hard, these things just happen. Get well soon!!! Thinking of you.

CountessDracula · 20/11/2003 13:51

Would love to but am going in January! Maybe should just go early and go for a few weeks...

Do have a nanny who is off sick (of course), will go to parents for weekend. DH already does more than his fair share I assure you, in fact he has been doing most of it for the past few weeks as have been feeling so tired. I just hope he doesn't have it too (he's been for a blood test today!)

Re the booze on demand, doc said not to drink - can anyone contra that? My liver tests are back to normal now so I can't see why not.

TBH I think I am already through the worst of it. Had a horrible stomach bug followed by a vile cold about 3 weeks ago and have been living on coffee coffee and more coffee since due to tirednss

Poo to it all. Still lots of mumsnet, will do all my xmas shopping on the web and wrap it as it arrives (while lieing in bed of course!)

Can I keep on with my 50 sit-ups a day?

Hey, just thought, Willow2, did you get tested for this? Know you have been feeling lousy too, may be an epidemic in our area?

OP posts:
princesspeahead · 20/11/2003 14:00

nope, you shouldn't drink, I was off booze for 3 months with mine (only sober person at university for freshers week boooooo). I think it just places additional strain on your liver which is trying to cope with the glandular fever.

lucky you going in Jan - where are you off to?

CountessDracula · 20/11/2003 14:19

Sailing up the Grenadines

CountessDracula · 20/11/2003 14:24

Have just read other recent thread on glandular fever and realised that dd must have it as she has had enlarged lymph nodes for some time, I wondered who I got it from (not been snogging behind bike sheds WSM!) She has had temp for a few days but luckily still sleeping well

OP posts:
pie · 20/11/2003 14:26

Oh CD, how crap. Take extra good care of yourself. Maybe some acupuncture, its very good for GF (not gina).
