am stressing could be a UTI, though she says it doesn't hurt when she wees and hasn't got a fever. she is quite tired atm but has just started school, so thought it was because of that.

do I take her to doctor or not? unless she starts saying it hurts when she wees am tempted not to...

It could just be that she is tired and distracted by all the new things she is doing at school. I know my eldest had a few wet beds when he started school - not a astress thing, just too deeply asleep - and also ds2 used to rush to the loo and not make it in time because he was so engaged with what he was doing.

Why not wait and see if there is another accident and then judge what to do?

chapsmum · 26/01/2006 18:02

Dinny, I had recurrent UTI's as a child and now have pylonephritus. The only symptom I used to get was over sinsitive skin. I am a weirdo. Don't think it ever caused me to have accidents, (untill ds was born but thats another matter.)
My sisters dd had same prob starting school. She just was to busy to remember to go to the loo and teachers weren't particularly helpful untill it was pointed out.
First obvious sign of UTI is urine smelling strong, weird or being cloudy.
Tell her not to flush so you can have a good inspect next time she goes...

dinny · 26/01/2006 18:03

oh, yes, maybe, LM. dh said (I'm at work) that she had another accident when she was playing at home after school but it didn't hurt her and was a biggish wee, not a dribble, iyswim.

am just so paranoid about UTIs as dd had one abouyt a year ago and then ds had one a month ago...

OP posts:
dinny · 26/01/2006 18:05

Chapsmum, is there heredity with regards to UTIs, do you know? just weird that both dd and ds have had one (dd is 3.5, ds is 16 months. I am really prone to them, as is my sister...

OP posts:
Lonelymum · 26/01/2006 18:05

Oh well dinny then of course you are going to be thinking of UTIs. When she had the UTI before, did it hurt her? Is this occasion any different or exactly the same as the last occasion?

twirlaround · 26/01/2006 18:07

have you had an ultrasound to check for slight structural abnormalities which can make a child prone to these? My GP does them as standard after a UTI

dinny · 26/01/2006 18:12

LM - when she had the last one (well, first and last one) she was in a lot of pain and had a really high temperature. It as nearly a year ago so surely if any strutural abnormality she'd have had more...?

Twirlaround - ds has been referred for ultrasound after his UTI. dd wasn't (at our old GP practoce - we have recently moved).

UTI's in themselves are not usually hereditary, reflux is.

The most common cause of a UTI (other than sex in adults) is a kink in the uriter (the pipe that carries urine from the bladder).

This is what my prob started as, the advice the consultant gave me was to make sure my bladder was completely empty by counting to 10 after youthink you've finnished peeing and you will usually produce a wee dribble more. Sorry TMI
Most chilren usually outgrow it ie the kink straightens as they grow. But if your kids have more than 3 UTI's in a year it would be worth getting a kidney scan to check for reflux. (where urine is pushed back into the kidneys causing infection)
Cranberry Juice stops bacteria from sitting on the wall of the uriter. and is a good preventative measure. (tastes better with rasberry in it.)
HTH

dinny · 26/01/2006 18:15

Chapsmum, thanks. If she had reflux you think she'd have had another infection by now (it was a year ago).?

OP posts:
chapsmum · 26/01/2006 18:20

By the age of 5 ( i'm presuming thats what she is) I would have thought she would have had more than one if she'd had reflux. I had one every three months..
Worth bearing in mind, if you are worried, get a 'red top' urine container from reception at health center. Get a midstream sample from you girl and put it back in to be sent off. You don't need to have an appt with a dr for them to check for infection.

dinny · 26/01/2006 18:22

she's 3.5 - she's just started in the nursery bit of school.

good idea - may well do that.

am scared gp will think I am an awful mother if BOTH my children have had UTI/s!

OP posts:
chapsmum · 26/01/2006 18:27

It's got nothing to do with good parenting, they just happen.
Sound like a stuck record and don't mean to sound patronising when I say its better to be safe than sorry. My first UTI whent undiagnosed for so long that I ended up losing the funciton of one kidney. So to hell with what your GP thinks!!!
Sorry for rant really hope everything is ok

dinny · 26/01/2006 18:32

think I shouls do urine test now or wait and see if she has anymore accidents, Chapsmum?

yes, well said - these things happen!

OP posts:
chapsmum · 26/01/2006 18:40

Would pick a sample bottle up an pop it in, if nothing it will put you mind at rest and she wont be any the wiser if your just doing it in the house.
Though TBH wouldnt do much harm to sit on it for another day and see how it goes.
I hope tommorrow is a leak free day for you x

dinny · 26/01/2006 18:44

I just think she'd have other symptoms as she was in such pain last time... Does it follow it's be similar this time?
Just spoke to her and asked if it hurts when she wees and she said no. She said she was doing a puppet show at school and that's why she forgot...

OP posts:
purpleturtle · 26/01/2006 18:44

Dd has wet herself at school TWICE today! She started in reception a couple of weeks ago. We had a similar problem when she started at nursery, because she was too shy to ask to go when she needed to. I think there's a bit of that involved here, and her teacher says she doesn't seem to like going to the loo on her own and asks if a teacher can go with her . I'm putting it down to the settling in period, and issuing firm instructions that she uses the loo every playtime!

dinny · 26/01/2006 18:46

just seems odd she had an accident at home too, Purpleturtle... am racking brains trying to think back as she has definitely had a couple of other accidents at home in the last couple of weeks too....

OP posts:
chapsmum · 26/01/2006 18:54

Like a said before dinny the only symptoms i used to get was weird feeling skin.
However the muscle that controlls bladder function the detusitor (SP) muscle is the one that gives us the horrible feeling of cystitus . So it stand to reason that if this was infected she would be having accidents because she felt the urge to go all the time and not because she forgot.

dinny · 26/01/2006 19:00

would they be small accidents, CM? (sorry, zillions of questions!)

just remembered - after school on Tues, I picked her up and went straight to playbarn. noticed when we got there she looked likle she needed the loo but she sprinted off as she had spotted her friend. 30 mins later she's had an accident (and was soaked). presumably that's because she did need to go and ignored the feeling...?

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 26/01/2006 19:11

dd (who has also had 2 urine infections in the past) wet the bed for weeks when she started school - this in a child who only had one or two accidents when she was being potty trained! We also had a few day accidents in her first few weeks at full time school when she would come out of school and be absolutely desperate and not make it home in time to use the loo.

I think they hate going off to the loo at first at school because they are worried they will miss out on something or will come out of the toilet and their friends would have moved on to do something without them. I think this is a very common problem!

dinny · 26/01/2006 19:13

oh, I hope it's just that, Foxinsocks - seem to have such a run of bad luck recently that I am hyper paranoid about everything.
did your dd have any accidents at home as well as school?

OP posts:
chapsmum · 26/01/2006 19:15

IF she did have a uti, she would prob have smaller accidents more freq
Sound as if shes just too interested in other stuff, wee monkey...
Though I suspect you'll not stop worrying untill you've had her urine tested!

foxinsocks · 26/01/2006 19:17

she did have a few and to be honest, I was paranoid it was a UTI aswell (this was a few years ago). I took her to the doctor, convinced it was a UTI and they took a urine sample and it was clear! Looking back now, I can see that it was all related to the stress of starting school. I think, for a while, you have to go back to that stage where you have just potty trained them and you remind them ALL the time to go to the toilet and physically frog-march them to the loo and make them go. I found if I made her go before we left the house and then asked her the minute she came out of school if she needed a wee (she normally did) and then took her to the toilet, she started to 'remember' to go again.

In your shoes, it might be worth getting her urine checked anyway just to put your mind at rest. I felt much more confident dealing with her once I knew it wasn't an infection (especially as yours has had an infection in the past).

dinny · 26/01/2006 19:23

Chapsmum/Foxinsocks - you are right. Think may do test tomorrow, even if it's to put mind at rest!

btw, dd still wears a night-time nappy (she is 3.5).
