am stressing could be a UTI, though she says it doesn't hurt when she wees and hasn't got a fever. she is quite tired atm but has just started school, so thought it was because of that.

do I take her to doctor or not? unless she starts saying it hurts when she wees am tempted not to...

good luck, let us know how it goes. I remember how stressful it all was at the time. Hope getting the sample is not too much of a headache for you!

chapsmum · 26/01/2006 19:47

no problem, hope to hear how you get on. get a sterile foil bowl from drs too. The best way to get a urine sample from a child is when you have some time, give her loads to drink, have the bowl handy, keep the drink flowing and then catch the urine in the sterile bowl, allot easier than the little tubes.
good luck

dinny · 02/02/2006 17:03

Hi, all, well, I put off taking her for urine test as she had a few better days but she had an accident at school yesterday and one today (just as dh picked her up). so think will try and get her an app tomorrow with GP. think she must have one. can they be stressed about starting school wothout really showing it? she seems v happy. also, we have just moved house too....

bumping for Chapsmum....

chapsmum · 02/02/2006 19:14

Have posted to you about ultrasoundss on your last thread...
I would think she should at least have a urinalisis done. (if you take a sample tommorow they can do a dipstick to see if she has any indication of a uti - protein leucocytes blood etc)
If she has none of these they should send a sample off for analysis. They may offer you antibiotics but it would prob be ok to wait for the results of the Urine sample if here dipstick is clear.

The move and school may just have thrown her out of her routine. (has she ever been funny about using the toilet whilst your out??

dinny · 02/02/2006 19:19

oh, thanks, Chapsmum - can't believe both of them might have to have blooming investigations for UTI. Really worried.

Haven't got a container to take sample - will hopefully get appointment early enough tomorrow am so sample can make "the van". She can do it in loos there, she's v obliging (most of the time).

She just says "I just didn't notice I needed to go, Mummy". Says it doesn't hurt (and I can tell it doesn't).

Does cold weather make you wee more often?
She's usually fine about weeing, outdoors, everywhere.

OP posts:
chapsmum · 02/02/2006 19:32

Spool cases for the camera are sterile if your stuck for a container.

Cold weather can make you wee more but theres no medical reason why it should.

My mum used to tell me I would catch a chill in my kidneys if I sat on a cold wall... this is completely medically unfounded, however If your dd is making a habit of 'holding it in' this can cause infections. She may just be doing this because she excited school etc.

The nursery teacher needs to toilet her regularly regardless of if this is an infection or not. she still is very wee.

She's not been constipated has she?
(am off to put the wee chap to bed but will be back in half an hour)

dinny · 02/02/2006 19:38

they say they do ask them regularly. though her teacher said to dh last week that dd had asked her for help wiping her bottom (after a poo) and to let us know this wasn't on - and for us to make dd aware she has to do it herself. which she's not very good at.

she hasn't been constipated - it's the first thing I thought of as that's how she got a UTI last time.

thanks, Chapsmum. I don't really see how it can be anything other than a UTI really.

chapsmum · 02/02/2006 19:46

Am at your nursery, she 3.5 ffs, I think its wondrful that she's potty trained!
My dnephew is same age and still requires help wiping. Also if asked he would say no.
She has to be physically taken to the toilet at regular intervals!
Even if she doesnt think think she needs chances are she will probably go.
If not a uti I think you definately need to be having word with school again!

dinny · 02/02/2006 20:01

I thought they couldn't help with wiping at school???

Right, plan of action is to check whether it's a UTI and speak to her teacher too.

Poor thing. But she is usually Ok at taking herself to the loo. This isn't the first time she's been at nursery. Used to do three full days and toilet herself.

Maybe school just let her say no instead of saying - right, come to toilet. will find out. thanks, CM.

No probs dinny, hope shes ok.
Seems that that could be the only other thing to explain it if its not a uti, but cross that bridge when you come to it.
Let me know how you get on tommorow, and with your ds ultrasound (if you done mind.)
good luck

dinny · 02/02/2006 20:18

can't see how she'd have accidents at home unles it's a UTI... though maybe she thinks she can hold on longer than she can...

yes, will do.

ps. can you get urine sample containers at pharmacists?

OP posts:
chapsmum · 02/02/2006 20:25

you can but some will charge you (what that about??)
If your local casulty is friendly give them a phone and ask if you could pick one up from there. Iwould let you do it....Dont suppose you live in scotland???

dinny · 02/02/2006 20:30

are you a doctor, CM?

we're just outside London. I'm in London atm, at work, so will drive past big pharmacy. will stop in.

dinny - sorry, haven't read whole thread, but DS, who has been 100% reliable soince he was 2, had an outbreak of accidents a couple of months ago, and again over the last couple of days. He is 4 and has just started reception.
I have put it down to slightly raised anxiety levels, the freezing cold weather, tiredness, general new routine, excitement and pre-occupation. I haven't made any big deal of it.
It hasn't lasted.

Have skim read re UTI - well worth getting a test, but honestly, I think moving house and new nursery are plenty of reason. I don't think it has to signal stress or upset, exactly, but have you ever found when you have started a new job, for instance, you just can't get the picture out of your head for a few days/ i think just absorbing new-ness takes up a lot of energy and attention for them Previouis habits go awol!

Hope she is ok.

chapsmum · 02/02/2006 20:39

no not a dr, a and e nurse

dinny · 02/02/2006 20:39

oh, thanks, Blue - I am driving myself round the twist worrying about her. and I should be working!
I just THINK it would be painful if it was a UTI (as it did when she had one before) but then I can't think what else it may be). feel awful as I am here at work and she is at home in bed (happily sleeping after big supper and vat of milk).

have to add am feeling particularly anxious about everything too - due to move a bit but mainly due to ds's ongoing tests.

OP posts:
dinny · 02/02/2006 20:40

and Chapsmum, thank you so much for taking the time to post. I really really appreciate it. thanks - makes a real difference to have such support.

OP posts:
chapsmum · 02/02/2006 20:45

Dinny it really is no probelm have kidney probs my self and was sick with worry that ds would inherit them. Glad if I can help in anyway Am here if you need me

Blu · 02/02/2006 20:54

see this thread Many wise MN-ers with exactly the same experience. Oh, and someone mentions slight lack of attention, too - which could be a factor if you are concerned about DS's tests. Sorry, I haven't caught up on that - where can I find it?

dinny · 03/02/2006 20:35

Hi, Chapsmum and Blu esp. Well, dd had really good day today. Was poised to phone GP early morning for appointment and she seemed so well and happy thought I would leave it for the morning. Had a word with her teacher when I dropped her at school and asked her to make sure they asked dd if she needed the loo regularly. When picked her up teacher said they'd reminded her twice and she'd been to loo twice. So, no accidents at all today. Yippee. So wonder if an accident-free day means it is NOT a UTI... Sure hope so.
