what to do?? Have tried tea tree oil, baby oil, special shampoos/conditioner, nitty gritty comb and 4 weeks later the buggers not gone from my hair! Ds1 generally clear as short hair so easy but mine is thick & shoulder-length and short of forcing dh to comb thro it every other night, don't know what to do. Can't seem to do a good job myself - poor 6 mth baby has had them too! I've checked various more chemical-based products in Boots and pharmacists told me not to use them, even just on me. Fed up (and itchy...)!

yes you'll need your dh to do it

you need to keep combed hair separate from non-combed hair

teddyedwards · 26/01/2006 14:35

Misschief, all i can say is it worked for us. I was sceptical too but bought it in desperation. I still go through hair with conditioner and comb every time i wash it, but only very quickly now. May be worth buying a bottle of baby shampoo and adding your own peppermint oil. you would have to experiment with proportions though.

lice attack (they sell it in Boots) is fab - it's made from coconut oil so it's pretty natural and it is the only preparation I've ever used that has worked!

Londoner · 28/01/2006 19:06

Have a look at this
Good Luck!
Let us know how you get on........

poppiesinaline · 28/01/2006 19:15

Delacet is a herbal treatment which you can use while you are bf. Not sure about the baby though. Mind you have to sit with it for 3 hours on your head with a shower cap on so baby probably wouldn't do that but you could. Personally, found it brill. Always cleared the problem in our house. I ask my local pharmacy to order it in for me (about 8 pounds a bottle). Electronic combs are crap, esp for long hair. That stuff teddyedwards recommends sounds good too.

codnotmud · 28/01/2006 19:16

can i ask about nitty gritty

am deperate with my dsses

do i buyt he whole pack or just the comb

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 19:33

Just get the comb, cod, and you can get it free on prescription. The comb is lethal, it has spiral grooves or something and nothing can survive it, (including hair, mostly )

merrymum · 28/01/2006 20:33

my dd1 had a problem with these little buggers last year no chemical treatment actually works you can get a kit called bugbuster from pharmacy it has a selection of combs one is small enough to get the eggs the best way to get rid is to saturate your hair in conditioner as nits are unable to move when wet and are much more easy to detect keep sectioning and combing once you are getting just babys keep persisting as they cant start laying untill they are adults full instruction kit in bugbuster good luck

codnotmud · 28/01/2006 20:37

so you comb when conditioner is in?

codnotmud · 28/01/2006 20:46

lol at this "Remarkably, as well as running their own successful company, these three entrepreneurial Mums have also managed to remain firm friends, socialising together whenever possible and staying united in their fight against the common head louse. "

fr om nitty gritty

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 21:01

Cod, the conditioner loosens their hold on the hair and temporarily makes them unable to run away. Otherwise they just move to a part of the head where you are not combing as they dislike light and movement. So wet hair, lots of conditioner and comb through from root to tip, sectioning hair as you. Wipe comb on kitchen towel or wash between each sweep of the comb. Repeat every 3 days until all gone (will take at least 2 weeks to get all lice in the cycle).

codnotmud · 28/01/2006 21:02

oh ok
thats hwere i have gone wrong!

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 21:07

What had you been doing, just out of interest?

It's not your year for parasites, is it?

codnotmud · 28/01/2006 21:07

god no well remembered
had wached w alot with conditioner htinkignt he honk would do it

and loads of chemicals

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 21:17

Ah, alas no. Chemicals sadly ineffective, and you still have to comb anyway so no point really. Plus who wants insecticide on their head?

robinpud · 28/01/2006 21:38

I used derbac m whilst breas feeding and am still alive to tell the story as is baby.. now 4

Enid · 28/01/2006 21:41

bumper pack of superdrug alberto balsom tea tree tingle conditioner + nitty gritty comb

combing when hair FULL of conditioner

got rid of them in two days here

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 21:41

Robin I don't think anyone has suggested that using chemicals while breastfeeding can actually be fatal.

Enid · 28/01/2006 21:42

chemicals are crap anyway arent they - they dont work? also they gradually get immune to them of course hence why you should never use flyspray

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 21:53

Enid I don't want to burst your bubble but I don't think it is possible to get rid of them all in 2 days. There will be more hatching out of eggs already laid, plus little tiny nymph ones too small to be caught by the comb. So all visible lice may be gone after 2 days, but you need to repeat the combing every 3 days for about 2 weeks (at least) to catch them at every stage in their life cycle and prevent the whole infestation starting up again.

Unless of course you have discovered some miracle cure in which case please tell all!

Enid · 28/01/2006 21:54

no continued combing for five days but none visible after two days

now do it once a week

the dds love it and think it is a treat

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 22:12

Enid, can I come and live with you please? Your relationship with your daughters just sounds the business...

harpsichordcarrier · 28/01/2006 22:14

i was just thinking that
will you adopt me and franny, enid?

FrannyandZooey · 28/01/2006 22:15

Ooh yes please

looks up adoringly at Enid, and new big sis Harpy

tamum · 28/01/2006 22:16

Hate to be the voice of dissent, but I didn't like the Nitty Gritty comb. I thought the Bug Busters ones were much better, and it was easier to see what you'd caught (luverly)
