How many days of the month do you take some kind of pain killer?

I think I feel pain most days, about half of the days in a month I take paracetamol and iburpofen.
Either head aches, sore back/neck type stuff.

Is this average?

I don't take any on a regular basis.

Maybe once every few months I'll have backache if I've strained it but generally I just put up with it and do some stretches or excercises to make it feel better. Hot water bottles usually work better for me as well.

I deal with headaches with a drink and fresh air, they're normally just from being cooped up with noisy kids for too long.

Ponders · 09/02/2012 21:59

sounds like a lot to me - I take them about twice a year, if I have a horrible cold Confused

QED · 09/02/2012 22:05

I probably take pain killers for a headache about once every few months.

I do get backache, & neckache, & knee twinges, & other aches, plus the occasional headache, but I don't take painkillers for them

period pain 3 days. ovary pain 2 days. back pain about 8 days. i react to the good stuf to.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 09/02/2012 22:09

interesting.
If I don't take painkillers for headaches they get to the point where I can't function. I guess I do take them for neck/back pain and perhaps could just get on with it.

I get hormonal migraines so I take co-codamol for those the day before and of ovulation and the day before and the first day of my period. Periods are horrendous so I've now been given transexamic acid to help with those, if the pain's bad then I take co-codamol then too. These are both prescription meds.

I don't really take anything else unless I've got a cold and then it's only paracetomol for my temp. Aches and pains etc are normally treated with my wheatbag and a good rub with something nice smelling.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 09/02/2012 22:14

yes it does suck!!.
I would love to wave a magic wand and not feel so tentative about whether today is going to be a headache day.
I only take over the counter stuff.

NKU and Jajas, I agree about the not functioning. If I don't take my tablets within about half an hour of a migraine then I'm useless for a couple of days.

Ponders · 09/02/2012 22:16

it's not normal to have headaches that bad, surely - have you seen your GP about them, NKU? (I see Jajas says she has & GP not concerned, but most people aren't afflicted like that Confused)

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 09/02/2012 22:17

yeah, apparently we just call them "tension headaches"
yes they F(*&ing cause tension!!

Now - less than 1 day a month on average.

In the past it has been more frequent for different reasons.

Dx with arthritis last summer and before that was taking quite a lot of pain killers, meds now seem more under control though.

Prior to that had a lot of pain twice a month for a few years after DD was born, and was eventually dx with Asherman's Syndrome (adhesions on uterus) and was taking a lot of pain killers severlal days a month.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 09/02/2012 22:19

NKU if it's related to your neck and shoulders (you mentioned them aching) then have you thought of seeing a chiropractor?

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/02/2012 22:20

One great benefit of being menopausal, and therefore having fewer periods, is that I take less painkillers. I used to take them all day every day for 3 days out of 26/27, for period pain.

Take paracetamol for colds.

I get a lot of mild rheumatism pain, but don't take anything for it, it tends to come and go and is twingy rather than properly painful.

Headaches? in Spring and Autumn when the atmospheric pressure changes I get awful headaches for about a week.

BIWI · 09/02/2012 22:21

If you're taking them that regularly then they could actually be causing the headaches!

NYE I had been going to an osteopath I thought we were getting somewhere, she said I had tight joints in the very top of my spine. She left for Australia and her boss took me on. He said the joints were too loose - therefore causing pain.

I gave up and didn't go back.

A lot of days as I get bad headaches and migraine. Just had a load of tests including liver function as I was very worried about it.

That would be a lot of painkillers in my view. I may take them about 3 or 4 times in a year on average for a bad cold or a hangover.

Xmasbaby11 · 09/02/2012 22:28

A few days a month, for period pains.

Although since giving birth last month, if I forget to take paracetamol every few hours, my stitches feel like they are going to burst [grimace face].

specialgun · 09/02/2012 22:41

I take too many at the moment. Most mornings (and sometimes in the middle of the night) I wake with a headache. If I don't get on top of it I will develop a migraine and be unable to get out of bed, except to be sick, for at least a day.

I try to use paracetamol and ibuprofen as I don't want to take too much co-codamol but it doesn't always work.

I found my headaches went after I was treated for an underactive thyroid. I'm hoping that a change in dose is all I need to get rid of them again.
