Also called a cascading stomach, anyone out there heard of this? It quite often makes me feel very nauseous. Can anyone help?

Hi Liketotalk. I joined Mumsnet this evening because I saw your message. I was told that I have a cup and spill stomach last week when I had a endoscopy. When I went to see my GP she did not know what it was - lol! I have been trying to find out as much as I can on the internet. Glad to share symptoms and findings!

Liketotalk · 15/02/2012 18:36

Thanks for your post, really nice to know someone else out there has the same, thought I was some kind of freak!!! I can't find any info on it re how to manage the symptoms etc. The consultant told me to try and keep a good posture to help the food go down into the right stomach when I'm eating and to stand up if I start to feel any symptoms. I also have anti-sickness tablets which help when the nausea hits and have been told to take gaviscon if I have acid from any food which has become stuck in the wrong bit of the stomach. Do you get the same symptoms of nausea, sometimes vomiting and acid?

It certainly does seem quite a rare thing and I have not really been given much advice at all. Was your endoscopy a complete success? The person doing mine was unable to get the camera all the way in because of the cup and spill problem. They also found I have a hiatus hernia. I do get acid reflux and I burp an awful lot but wasn't sure if this is down to the hiatus or the cup and spill. I don't have nausea and I am never sick. I do get a lot of bloating when I eat and pain under my rib cage. I can eat half a sandwich and feel like I've eaten a five course dinner! I also get cramping (not every day) around my middle, sort of around the belly button but from side to side and I sometimes wake up in the morning and I feel that I have been kicked in my stomach - it feels so sore. I am assuming this is because of the cup and spill deformity but as you quite rightly say there is very little info available. I do get very windy sometimes - not pleasant for anyone else around me! I did find one article on the web suggesting that after eating we should like on our left side as this will help the food trapped in the 'cup' to 'spill' into the stomach. Would look a bit odd in a restaurant though wouldn't it!!!!

ScatterChasse · 16/02/2012 20:28

I can't really help, but I think Bruce Forsyth has one! He mentioned it in his autobiography, and said leaving forwards and dipping his right (I think) shoulder could help.

foreversummer · 16/02/2012 20:58

Well Brucie has lived to a ripe old age. So I guess it is not going to finish us off yet then!!

Liketotalk · 16/02/2012 21:56

Hilarious, you've both made me really giggle tonight. Guess we're unique. foreversummer, your symptoms sound unpleasant tho, my nausea and vomiting don't seem so bad now. Yes endoscopy was a success although doc lost the camera at one point so it took twice as long, nice!!! If you do come across any info please remember me and let me know and I'll do the same. Still giggling re Bruce Forsyth, think I may try the leaning forwards and dipping the shoulder thing, bit less obvious than lying down in the middle of restaurant!!! Thanks both :-)

Thank you Liketotalk. I will keep this thread in my favourites and I'll let you know if I learn anything new. Until then . . . keep smiling!

Hello...I have just joined today as I saw this thread and wanted to say hi. I had a barium swallow xray last week which shows I have a cascade/ cup and spill stomach. This explains alot of my symptoms that I've suffered for the last 50 years, nausea, bloating, feeling full after eating small meals, discomfort, reflux etc. There really isn't much info out there so happy to share things that work etc as I find them and any you have would be great to hear.
Wishing you both a good day 😘Xx

Hi
I've just joined mumsnet this evening after searching for information on cup and spill stomach. There's not a lot of information on it and found this posting about it. I was diagnosed just under two years ago. I have lost 3 stone and suffer with pain under my ribs that sometimes goes through to my back. It's really getting me down at present. I have been prescribed lansoprazole twice a day and meneverine. I was advised to follow the fodmap diet and do a food diary and find onions, eggs, dried and some fresh fruit make me worse. My stomach feels tight at times and my appetite isn't good. I get full very quickly, which can be quite embarrassing when out for a meal. When my stomach is empty I sometimes feel quite sick too. Has anyone got any tips on what helps them please Smile

Rainbow247 · 24/09/2019 11:28

Hi Janesjuniors
I was told by the radiographer that I had a cascade stomach 7 weeks ago. I am still waiting to hear from my consultant. The radiographer said the cup part of my stomach has no peristalsis and only cascades when I eat/ drink enough to make it full enough to spill over. He suggested that I give it 10 minutes after eating and then lie down on my left side for 10 to 15 minutes. It's not always convenient but I do find it helps and I definitely know when I haven't laid down as I get more discomfort and gas. I was previously on omeprazole for a few years prior to finding about the cascade stomach. They left me severely B12 deficient and I now have to have a B12 jab every 12 weeks to keep my levels good. My GP thinks that I was actually low in stomach acid to start with, since stopping omeprazole I now have a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in warm water before each meal and that is also helping, especially with the nausea. If my consultant gives me anymore tips that work I will let you know. I am already on low FODMAP as have auto immune conditions too, fibromyalgia, RA and hashimoto's thyroiditis. Wishing you well and sending hugs Xx

Hi Rainbow247.

Thanks so much for your very informative answer to my problem. I've seen no consultants or specialists on the subject. I will definitely pursue this with the doctor as at present I'm on holiday in Spain and really suffering with pain. Thanks so much for your time and effort to tell me so much. I hope you get answers and relief from your health problems. Take care. Jane xxx

I was told Monday I have a cup and spill stomach which is difficult to find any details how to manage it. I have had 3 endoscopys and have now been told I'm having a CT scan next week I will report back here if I get any further news on how to treat this. I have had dreadful problems eating for the last 3 years and it is now getting me down and worried about eating out. I feel I just won't to lay down and die when I get a bad episode. I have kept a food diary for 2 years but there is no pattern as to any type of food. It is always different. Sometimes I have gone a week or so ok then it can be 3 times a week, it is so ramdom. I am not always sick food but bile and bubbles and burp so loud its very embarrassing. I find I just want to lay down and try to sleep.
Any advise would be helpfull.
Heather

I had a gastroscopy last week because of on and off nausea since Christmas. After the scope I was told I had mild gastritis, a small hiatus hernia and a suspected cup and spill stomach with a recommendation to do a barium meal to confirm. Apparently I might not get that for a couple of months. I have been on PPIs for months now but they make no difference to my symptoms so I’m wondering if the cup and spill is the problem. The GP has kept me on them because of the mild gastritis, until I get to see the specialist. Relatively little seems to be known about cup and spill stomachs. I’m just wondering what treatment was given to others who have one and whether it worked. Is there a permanent treatment or it is a matter of exercises every day or something for the rest of your life?

I would be grateful for any thoughts, if nothing else so I have an idea of the kinds of things I should be asking the specialist about when I eventually meet with them.

Thanks

Thanks

Hi I had endoscopy last week and they think I have one of these, awaiting biopsy test results and possible barium swallow to confirm. I can’t find any information can you please help? Thanks

kshatri · 15/06/2022 00:04

Hi
Have only just seen these posts....
I was diagnosed with a cascade stomach (cup and spill) over twenty years ago after struggling to eat certain foods.
After undergoing a Barium meal, I learnt that I had this abnormality.
I was led to believe that surgery is possible to rectify the problem but it can cause more issues afterwards so I left well alone.
I often feel bloated after eating small amounts so make a point of not eating after 8pm. I also regularly suffer acid reflux for which I take Omeprazoleas as and when necessary.
Despite being advised to try and sleep on my left side I find it dreadfully uncomfortable so ignore this advice.
Much as I can't offer much advice on how to deal with this problem, it isn't as rare as you may imagine and is certainly not life threatening.

susiefx · 03/04/2023 20:24

Hello everyone. I’ve just found this thread after searching for cup and spill stomach. It’s been really interesting reading all the responses. I’ve been struggling with post nasal drip and feeling of mucus in my throat for the past three years. Treated with on and off esomeprazole, steroid nasal spray and antihistamines. I finally had an endoscopy to check for reflux four weeks ago and the nurse practitioner who did it told me that I had a cup and spill stomach , the said that I must have had a hiatus hernia at some point. I was told to take twice daily esomeprazole for six months then let me GP review

Last week a letter from the consultant who I’ve never seen arrived saying that I had a paraoesaphageal hiatus hernia but no mention of the cup and spill. There was no mention of this hiatus hernia on the endoscopy report. I’m completely confused as to what I might or might not have.

Just reading some of the responses on here, if I have indigestion, it usually feels better if I lay flat, the opposite of what you should do for reflux. I know that I do have some reflux but I wonder whether the stomach issue is the main thing.

Wondering if anyone else has been told anything similar. Sorry so long but thanks so much for reading.

Autumndays20 · 04/04/2023 05:01

Hi

I would contact the hospital to check that the letter was summarising your scope and not someone else’s. A paraoesophageal hernia usually requires surgery and is different from a sliding hiatal hernia which is what most people have so you will want them to be using the correct diagnosis before they decide on treatment! The letter describes something so different from what they told you during the scope that I would seriously question it.

After my scope they queried a cup and spill stomach and wanted me to have a barium swallow to confirm. When you contact the hospital you could ask them if they will take those steps too (assuming what they told you at the scope aas correct). When I had my swallow they said the cup and spill was very mild and nothing to worry about.

Janey500 · 19/07/2023 05:14

Hi all, I'm so glad I have found this link...as I have discovered this cup and spill too. Does anyone know where more information can be found..thank you all

janesjuniors · 19/07/2023 09:09

Hi Janey500. Sorry to hear you have this problem too. Unfortunately there is very little information available. If you read the above messages you will find some hints. I found following the fodmap diet helpful as well as eating small regular meals. I find if I eat too much (particularly beef) I struggle to digest it but I’m feeling much better now and rarely get pain or sick feelings. I soon get full and now know how much I can eat without getting uncomfortable feelings. I take lansoprazole daily and if I get pain I take a mabevarine tablet. I lost quite a bit of weight but have since changed my job to a desk job and have put on a stone in weight. People say I look a lot healthier for it. Ask away if there is anything I can help you with I will try. I don’t think many people suffer with this condition. Take care xx

Janey500 · 19/07/2023 12:49

Hi janesjuniors
It is such a relief to hear from you today. Also another relief that you have found lansoprazole to be effective as I will be starting this medication too. My symptom is this awful nausea that I experience most days and I do get bloating and tummy ache. I have inflammation in my stomach lining..not sure if the cup and spill and inflammation are related. However, I will check out the fodmap diet and see if this will improve. I am also under the gastro team for constipation too after trying high fibre diets and meds with not much improvement
I am really pleased that you are looking much better.

Once again thank you for your reply.
All the best to you xx

P.S yes I have read the threads,,,very useful

Sconesandgravy · 14/04/2024 19:07

Sorry for digging up this thread, but I was diagnosed with this today, after ending up in hospital with severe rib pain and suspected gallstones a week or so ago.

I can't find any particularly helpful information online other than that this is a not very well understood condition.

All I've been told is I'll need a barium meal at some point and possibly surgery (?!)

I've found all your comments very helpful, thank you x

Janey500 · 30/06/2024 15:26

Hi
I've just seen your message.

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis I have a cup and spill stomach too.

I had an endoscopy and was reviewed by the gastro team as mentioned above. I tried lansoprazole and didn't help, so now I'm just taking antisickness and gaviscon tablets as and when im feeling terribly nauseous. Also I get fed up of healthcare professionals saying they have never heard about it or they know nothing about it.

I am pleased you are having further investigations, would be good to hear how you get on.

All the best...
