all babies are different! my 11 month old is about 24lb BUT he is very tall for his age as well.
we go to a local nct group and there is a little girl there who is 14 months and only about the same weight as your dd!
all kids vary... your dd is just small! if she is fine in every other way then there really is no need to worry!

look out for stinkweasel... she has a tiny pocket baby too!

Heartmum2Jamie · 15/01/2006 20:59

Hi there! I agree that every baby is different, and the same can be said for my 2 boys. Ds1 was 23lb 6oz at 1yr, but ds2, who will be 19 months next weekend, only weighs 22lb and is still in 9-12 clothes (some 6-12). At 11 months, ds2 weighed 17lb 10oz. Admittedly, he has food allergies and a heart condition which my other son doesn't, but I reckon that ds2 would have been smaller anyway.

I think what is more important (or so my paed keeps telling me, lol) is not the weight or height on thier own, but the 2 combined. Ds2 is on the 9th centile (finally!!) for weight and for height also, so he is proportional and looks great!

Besides, great things come in small packages

Missy8 my has a milk allergy and at 15 months only wieght 21 lbs hes alot smaller than other babies his age, people always comment on it. But if hes healthy in every other way and developing normaly dont worry.

misdee · 15/01/2006 21:11

missy8, my dd3 is teeny. but she is also v long, so 9-12monmth fit her i length but are very baggy if that makes sense. she weighs about 18/19lb at a guess, and is almost 11months old. when she was weighed at her 8month check she only weighed 15lb 10oz.

foundintranslation · 15/01/2006 21:13

ds (8mo) is small, dropped to 3rd centile (for height) by 2 months and has been on or just above it since. Weight in proportion to height is a bit under 50th centile.

Wallace · 15/01/2006 21:14

Similar story to HeartmumtoJamie here. Ds was 20lbs at 20 weeks old (and he only weighed 6lb 11 at birth!) and dd was 17 lb 6 when she was 11 months (despite being a pound heavier at birth!). Dd did have a heart condition (fixed now ) but I think she would have been little anyway, like I was as a child. She is now 4.5 and is tiny for her age, even though she is perfectly healthy.

I think you are are right that as long as your dd is happy and eating well then there is nothing to worry about

7777777 · 15/01/2006 21:29

hiya, my ds 15months has milk allergy and i always worried about his weight, at 11months he weighed 17lb and has just hit the 20lb mark at last. he hovers just below or on the 9th centile. i can understand your worry, people used to comment on my ds being dinky but they dont so much now and i pad him out with winter clothes so he looks bigger!

blueshoes · 15/01/2006 21:30

My dd 2.3 years is a dinky doo as well. Also congenital heart condition which despite fixing did nothing to speed up her growth. I am tiny so she must take after me. She is consistently below the 0.4th percentile, but very active, crazy, cracks me up!

longwaytogo · 15/01/2006 21:33

Right I don't think any of you need to worry my dd 3 this month weighs 23llb she has just gone into 18-24 month trousers for the length but can't keep them round her waist. Ds 21 months is 22llb at least they are even one on each hip.

7777777 · 15/01/2006 21:34

blimey blue shoes!below the 0.4th centile, that it really dinky. my mate has got a dinky 2yr old dd and calls her "rugrat" coz shes so mad

orangina · 15/01/2006 21:35

misdee my dd sounds like yours. had her 9 month hv check last week, on 9th percentile for weight, but 98th for length! Still wearing 3-6 months for trousers etc which barely stay up around her tiny waist and bottom. missy8, don't worry about it. As long as she is happy and alert etc, she'll be fine.

LIZS · 15/01/2006 21:38

dd was very similar. tbh not sure she was even that at a year. She is now 4, at school and still tiny but very fit and healthy with it. Try not to concern yourself too much.

foundintranslation · 15/01/2006 21:39

Think ds takes after us both. dh has always been tiny - when he was in yr 4 at primary a woman came up to him in the street and asked if he was xxx from kindergarten He's 5'2 now and I'm an inch shorter.

nightowl · 16/01/2006 04:24

both my kids are skinny but dd is tall with it. shes two soon and 24lbs.

kreamkrackers · 16/01/2006 12:16

my dd is 20 months and has started gaining loads of weight recently she's now 19lb8oz, which puts us near the 2nd centile.

missy8 · 16/01/2006 18:36

wow thanks for the response everyone,i weighed her myself at our clinic this morning and she's 18lb1oz i know it's not a huge weight gain since last time she was weighed but hey at least she's gone up not down,i give her brekkie, dinner and tea,and some finger foods during the day plus the odd brst feed so i know her appetite is quite good,im only 5ft and dh is 6ft but my grandmother was teen weeny 4ft10" so i guess she wont be big anyway, and she still fits in 6-9mth clothes,my sisters baby is 6mth and shes 16lb and my cousins baby is 7mth and he is 21lb but they are bottlefed babies, thanks starlover i will look out for stinkweasel it;s good to be able to chat to other parents in similar circumstances

Hi Missy8. I have had 3 babies, 2 of which were tiny, my 3rd however is large compared to my 1st 2.
DS1 was 10 lb 7 oz at 12 months (he had a milk intolerance) DD was 9 lb 7 oz at 11 months (she didn't have any problem with milk). DS2 is 9 months (20 lbs ) and weighs more than my DD did at just over 2 years!
My DS1 is now 9 and only weighs 2 1/2 stone. If she is happy and healthy with lots of energy, I wouldn't worry. They are all so different.

Piffle · 16/01/2006 19:22

My 3.4 yr old is 24 lbs, she was a TINY baby
At 11 mths she weighed only 13lbs 8oz
AS many doctors told us, look at the baby not the scales if your dd is alert and happy and eating and sleeping well, you have little to worry about.
I stopped going to clinics as I was sick of people asking, was she prem, why wasn't she eating such and such...
My daughter is tiny, fact, she ate little and often.
You are doing well to have a baby with such an allergy doing so well.
Good things come in small packets you know

Hazellnut · 16/01/2006 19:27

My dd is almost 12 months (a week tomorrow !) and at her last weigh in at 11 months was 18lbs 5 oz but eats like a pig ! Yes we get a few comments about her size but given I'm 5 foot and dh is 5 foot 7 and skinny questions would be asked if she was big !! Mind you, she was born below the 0.4 centile (IUGR as well as midget parents which is a bit unfair) and has now got up to about 15 centile so I'm quite frankly pleased !! The baby friend we see the most of, was born the day after her and is a good head taller and about 5 lbs heavier.... they're all different as long as they're healthy that's all that matters !!

CaptainDippy · 16/01/2006 19:38

No need to worry missy8 - sounds fairly normal to me - girls are generally smaller than boys - what was your DD at birth?? My DD1 is not small, quite stocky really, but she was about 18lbs at 11 months - took forever to get her big enough to warrant spending the money on a forward-facing car seat - Is your DD is on the right percentile in her "Red Book"?? - then don't worry!! DD2 was a month early is a pocket venus - skinny minnie!! She is 8 months and weighs around 14lbs - People can't believe that she is 8 months - and she looks so bizaare crawling around - Bless!! DD1 was 8lb at birth and DD2 was 5lb.

PeachyClair · 16/01/2006 20:07

DS3 was 22 lbs last time he was weighed, he was just 2. Also a milk intolerant one. The difference for me, I guess, is that this is my second of this: DS1 was the same (DS2 exactly 50 centile on all things, no milk problems).

As long as he's healthy and HV happy, then I wouldn't worry. Ask for a refferral to Paeds if you feel you need it (we were referred by HV, nothing wrong but at least we and Paeds knew).

He's wearing 18 - 24 month clothes atm (3 in July), which is obv small but not desperately abd.

Good luck, I'm sue you'll be OK but normal to worry.

X

hi everyone thanks again for all your replies,i must admit im feeling much happier now,dd was 8lb3oz when born she seemed to be steadily gaining weight until may when she was admitted to hospital with severe diarrohea and thats when the docs said it was cows milk intolerance,i was also advised to cut out dairy from my diet with me brst feeding and she is fine now except from being teeny weeny,i think it's probarly me just worrying,my other 2 dd's now 15 and 12 were both bottlefed so it's a new experience all over again for dh and myself.

Hi,
I wouldn't worry about your daughters size. I've got 3 and they have all been on the small side. With my first I was told by the Health visitor to feed him up on cream and lots of dairy stuff.
I think common sense kicked in and stopped me following their advise as my son was in proportion. Those graphs have a lot to answer for. As long as they are ok in other areas of development and are eating (occaisonally !)then I wouldn't worry. Children grow at different rates.
It's easy for me to reply to others comments about my children because I am 5ft 1.5ins so I just tell them that I would look funny with a big child. Who knows one day they may tower over me.
Also breastfed babies are generally smaller in the first few years. As fewer and fewer women breastfeed children will look bigger. That doesn't mean there is something wrong with the smaller ones.

Sorry to babble on - I've had 6 years with 3 children being commented on. It's a subject I feel strongly about.

hana · 18/01/2006 22:58
