I feel sick, dizzy and very yuk - wondering if I've cooked it incorrectly - boiled it as per instructions.

OP posts:
beansprout · 13/01/2006 17:26

it will taste bitter if you don't wash it. Don't think will hurt tho.

beansprout · 13/01/2006 17:29

Shouldn't think so, but like rice, it should be rinsed first.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/01/2006 17:29

I think you need to rinse it a lot, to make it not bitter. I don't think it's harmful if not rinsed, though.

Kelly1978 · 13/01/2006 17:29

found this -

Before cooking, the seeds must be rinsed to remove their bitter resin-like coating, which is called saponin. Quinoa is rinsed before it is packaged and sold, but it is best to rinse again at home before use to remove any of the powdery residue that may remain on the seeds. The presence of saponin is obvious by the production of a soapy looking "suds" when the seeds are swished in water. Placing quinoa in a strainer and rinsing thoroughly with water easily washes the saponin from the seeds. In South America the saponin which is removed from the quinoa is used as detergent for washing clothes and as an antiseptic to promote healing of skin injuries.

So at least you have shiny insides now!

puff · 13/01/2006 17:30

hmm, naughty puff, I always forget about rinsing rice before cooking too.

I think it must just be the bitterness then - my mouth tastes horrid so maybe my tum is rebelling. Good job I didn't feed it to ds1 and 2.

no need to rinse the disgusting coating off those first

beansprout · 13/01/2006 17:32

Brilliantly healthy food though. Don't let it put you off!!

puff · 13/01/2006 17:32

OP posts:

I liked the texture of it beansprout. The mistake I made was decanting it straight out of the packet into a container, without looking at the cooking instructions.

Another cooking lesson learned
