Need some advice really..........
Saw out of hours dentist today who said I had a broken wisdom tooth and gave me antibiotics and told me to get in touch with a dentist.........
So
1.How long will the amoxycillin take to work? I have an abcess and its very painful :{

  1. Do I have to wait until I finish the antibiotics until they will remove it?
  2. Can they do that at the dentist?
  3. Is it going to cost me an arm and a leg? No one is taking on NHS patients where I live.
  4. I have been taking paracetamol and tramodol for the pain as its constant, any other suggestions? Can't have aspirin/ ibrufen because of crohns disease.

Thank you in advance

Use mouthwash, swish it in the wound.

yellowraincoat · 03/01/2012 00:11

Do you have lemsip? I found that swishing that around the painful bit helped. Also: salt water (lukewarm) and clove oil. Oh and, weirdly, chewing gum stuck over the painful area. Must be sugar free, I was amazed that it actually worked and I had pain so bad I was crying in a theatre.

Can you go to a dental hospital? When I went there, the treatment was on the same day and free.

Bignorkz · 03/01/2012 00:21

My DH had an abcess before Xmas, amoxicillin took 2-3 days to kick in. He's got to have his tooth out at the hospital though, his dentists don't do it in their surgery. He used clove oil which provided some relief although it didn't last long, he was also taking tramadol 100mg four times a day, although he did end up with constipation as a side effect, plus full dose of paracetamol! Hope you feel better soon, tooth pain is NASTY.

PeelThemWithTheirMetalKnives · 03/01/2012 00:24
  1. I think the antibiotics will have started to help already.
  2. Am pretty sure they can take it out before you've finished the antibiotics. The infection will be able to drain away once the tooth is out - it's the fact that it's trapped which is causing the pain.
  3. Dentist will remove wisdom tooth there.
  4. Last time DH was at the dentist (he goes privately) I think it was £100-£120 an hour. Extraction would be a half hour appointment.
  5. If you've still got the same level of pain while waiting for your appointment ask the dentist if they can prescribe anything stronger or if your doctor can.

Hope it's feeling better by now though.

Until it stops hurting I would put clove oil on it, v numbing.

Oh and a friend suggested soaking a bit of cotton wool in whiskey/brandy and holding against the affected tooth, we didn't try that one as we are not shorts drinkers so didn't have any in....a glass of wine helped though, just made him more dozy with the tramadol! Grin

toody · 03/01/2012 00:38

Try whisky as a mouthwash holding it on the affected area as long as possible. Also don't lie too flat in bed, sit up as much as posible, can't remember exactly why but toothache is worse shen lying down think it's something the body produces which makes the pain worse. Sleeping upright always works for me.
Feel better soon.

wannabestressfree · 03/01/2012 00:39

Thanks all am resigned to another night of no sleep. Its agonising, will go and buy clove oil tomorrow. Although it is one tooth the abcess has made my whole cheek swell and I feel terrible.
Have got morphine in the cupboard if all else fails........ will hunt down dentist tomorrow.
Oh and I have the worst acid indigestion too to really cheer me up

Sorry, I got the days mixed up and thought you had been taking the antibiotics for longer. My dentist said ordinary painkillers won't touch it, I'm afraid. Have you got the morphine for something else then and is it okay to take it? If so I definitely would as otherwise I don't think you'll get any relief.

PeelThemWithTheirMetalKnives · 03/01/2012 01:08

Raging temperature? I didn't have that. Can you phone NHS/get somebody else to do it and ask for advice?

Jasper · 03/01/2012 01:39

I'm a dentist. Impossible to answer your qs without more details.
Is the tooth

  1. Impacted (stuck , not fully in)?
  2. decayed / heavily filled?
wannabestressfree · 03/01/2012 02:46

I have the morphine for crohns disease. I have a bowel like a collander at the moment
Thanks Jasper the tooth is decayed I would guess, its broken. The abcess is in my cheek. I started the antibiotics today and the dentist told me to find a dentist and have the tooth removed............ I am just in so much pain and on fire. I am limited to pain relief as have crohns and a heart condition.

You poor thing. I had this a while back (long history of mouth problems) and the anti-biotics took about 4 days to take effect. I was jumping through the roof with pain. Years ago they used to lance abscesses, but not sure if they still do that.

If you do have the tooth out tomorrow, take heed of the advice and don't smoke or drink after the extraction as this could lead to more complications. Best of luck to you.

wannabestressfree · 03/01/2012 03:54

Thank you :}
Four days...............God.............Kill me now

Jasper · 03/01/2012 04:41

So the tooth is broken.
Is it also impacted?
Did the dentist take an x- ray?
Did the dentist given any reason for not extracting it there and then?
The only reason for the emergency dentist not extracting it that I can think of is if an x-ray revealed it to be a particularly tricky extraction requiring a specialist oral surgeon.

In the meantime use hot salty water as a mouth "bath". Hold a mouthful over the affected area and massage your cheek at the same time. Do not place anything warm like a hot water bottle on the outside of your face.

Jasper · 03/01/2012 04:47

I am concerned on you behalf.
There is a myth that refuses to die that you can't get a tooth out when it s abscessed/ when the gum is swollen. This myth is perpetuated by DENTISTS as well as lay persons. I come across it all the time.
It is complete nonsense.

Yes, it can be harder to get an abscessed tooth numb but it's by no means impossible , it just takes a bit more skill. I have NEVER not managed to get an abscessed tooth numb, and that includes cases where the swelling is enormous and disfiguring.

wannabestressfree · 03/01/2012 05:05

She refused to take an x ray as she said I couldn't take it with me. She was just an emergency dentist and I got the impression after a.seeing my medical history and b. seeing the queue she wanted me out.

The tooth is visibly broken but she didn't want to do anything more until I had the antibiotics. Even then I have to find a dentist. I am on fire and the pain is not going regardless of the enormous amount of tramadol I have had :{ I think my head may well explode

OP posts:
Jasper · 03/01/2012 05:09

That is shocking (non) treatment from the emergency dentist.
Did she give any reason for not taking it out?

mathanxiety · 03/01/2012 05:11

You need to get the tooth out ASAP and the abscess drained.

Don't mess around with painkilling and waiting around. Get it pulled.

I had a tooth pulled due to an abscess as a child, as soon as the dentist saw it. exFIL was a neurosurgeon and dealt with dental abscesses in conjunction with dental surgeons occasionally. Bursting abscesses can have horrible effects.

yellowraincoat · 03/01/2012 05:13

Oh lord, you poor thing, you sound in so much pain. If I were you, I'd go to a private dentist first thing. My private dentist did a free consultation and they'll be able to tell you the price and maybe you can pay in installments? Or they might refer you to a dental hospital, which would be free.

Jasper · 03/01/2012 05:14

Math what do you mean by "bursting abscesses can have horrible effects"?

Jasper · 03/01/2012 05:17

Yellow why do you suggest a private dentist.?
