Is there no other way to avoid the infections? (given that he's upset)

starlover · 07/01/2006 21:49

oh bless him

starlover · 07/01/2006 21:50

how mayn infections has he had btw? if it's a fair few then at least he will be free of that and having to keep going to doctors etc

Aw bless. What a shame that he's so upset, but must be for the best if the Doctors are recommending it.

If its any consolation (and I'm sure you don't want to think of your ds behaving like an...ahem.... adult).... I went out with a guy who was circumcised at the age of 8 and I didn't even notice until he pointed it out to me!

Toothache · 07/01/2006 21:55

What is it he's upset about though? Is it the operation.... or the fact that he's being circumcised?

7777777 · 07/01/2006 22:01

hes only had one infection before, it swells up and goes red down one side, that was wen he was under 5. the doc tonite said hes got "pin hole opening" and the skin hasnt gone back. he said it should have been picked up by now.he also said if there was a dad at home and i said no there wasnt, that the dad could have gradually forced it back!ugh!he then went on to explain in detail the procedure, whilst pointing at ds willy. i think thats wot freaked him out. i myself am not against the op, at least itl stay clean. i think his age doesnt help, hes too knowing.

Toothache · 07/01/2006 22:02

7777777 - Aw how embarassing for him. So could it not be rectifyed now by forcing it back? >winces in sympathy pain

starlover · 07/01/2006 22:03

so, he can't retract the foreskin at all?

starlover · 07/01/2006 22:03

btw, i am sure that there is a procedure that is just a partial circumcision... so it will retract etc but doesn't take the whole thing off

SoupDragon · 07/01/2006 22:05

That must have been horribly embarrassing for your DS!

7777777 · 07/01/2006 22:09

it made me feel sick the way he was pushing it bak!im a bit squemish when it comes to private parts. he was suggesting that a male could force it back, why a male i dont know, perhaps its cause they have the same parts. oooooo i couldnt do it, i dont think hed let me either. he said he could have a "t"section done, where they cut down the middle and i think cut a chunk out[feeling sick face in here] . i got a bit confused cause he was poking and pulling his willy the whole time so i was bit put off. wot does a full circumsion involve then?

OP posts:
Blu · 07/01/2006 22:09

Poor thing - v embarrassing and upseting.
I thought i read somewhere recently that circumcision is now v rarely necesary in most cases - second opinion? Will he be referred to a GU consultant? Ask him about an alternative? Might be a bit less confronting for DS.

starlover · 07/01/2006 22:11

blimey! he had it out the whole time?????? that's really embarassing for your poor ds! he could have just drawn a diagram surely??????????

a full circumcision removes the whole foreskin! so at least he won't have that

Toothache · 07/01/2006 22:11

7777777 - A full circumcision is removing the foreskin entirely. The bloke I was with had a tiny (almost invisible) scar most of the way around about a cm from the..... eh.... tip(??).

Blu · 07/01/2006 22:12

x posted.
Circucision involves cutting off the foreskin, ion a circle, all the way round the penis. I think the other procedure just involves loosening the foreskin by cutting the skin that anchors it...the little verticle line of skin inside the foreskin on the underside of the penis., iyswim.

7777777 · 07/01/2006 22:12

im going to go to dox next week and see what our doctor says. they gave me a prescription for antibiotiox and i asked where id find a chemist at 8oc on a sat nite!he said theres loads open at 10am, my ds is adamant that he wants to go to his footie match at 10!hes gonna wrap a sock round it for protection!have to find a chemist after

7777777 · 07/01/2006 22:14

ugh!wish i hadnt asked. hopefully wont be necessary for full circumsion then. hes still upset but managing to play on the ps2!

OP posts:
starlover · 07/01/2006 22:19

just think though... once it's done there will be no more visits to weird penis doctor about infections etc!
and if it's only partial NO-ONE will know!

7777777 · 07/01/2006 22:22

i agree starlover and in my opinion i think they look much nicer skinless!thanks for listening everyone.xx

Hi 7777777. Just to say that my DS1 had the same problem when he was 4. He used to be in agony, especially when he needed to pee so it was recommended that he was circumcised. He recovered really quickly from the op and is just fine these days (he's 15 now!) Don't concern yourself about whether it could have been avoided by moving the skin back and forth etc - my GP made the same remark (I was a single parent at the time) but I also have another DS who has had none of the same problems and I dealt with him just the same! If he needs it doing then the sooner the better as the embarrassment factor will just increase with his age. I did some nursing and can remember having a 16 year old on the ward who was absolutely mortified by the whole experience, bless him! Good luck!

7777777 · 07/01/2006 23:14

thanks misspiggy, i agree that the sooner he has it done the better, apparently before puberty. ive just checked my ds 14months old when changed his nappy, in case i should start pulling it back now!being a female with no man about im not sure exactly how far it should go back anyway. my elder ds watching a dvd in bed now and eating for england so obviously forgotten all about tonights embarrassment and fright. thankyou.x

You're welcome! We're out watching DS1 playing football tomorrow morning (have you seen the weather - it's going to be bloody freezing!) as well so I'll be thinking of your DS with his sock..awww! BTW, I agree with the others who said that penises look much better "skinless" Couldn't say that before as DH, who isn't circumcised was looking over my shoulder )

7777777 · 08/01/2006 00:00

good luck at the match, my ds gone 7 games unbeaten and theyve got a hard team tomoro.hes midfield so bound to get knocked about hence having the extra padding down below!

I dont know much about this except that all 3 of my brothers had to have this done (at a younger age) and they were more comfortable after the effects of the surgery as it caused them a problem beforehand. They are all fine now and have no problems with anything whatsoever including girlfriends etc

My DS appears to be having similar problems and is being referred to a urologist currently.

Im sure your DS will be fine.
