Just wondering, because mine has

I used to buy it when I was ill

goodness knows why - if I drink it now the sugar makes me all jittery

hope you feel better soon!

Bunbaker · 19/11/2011 20:13

I used to drink it as a child if I was ill and off my food.

TuftyFinch · 19/11/2011 20:14

It used to have 'aids recovery' written on the bottle.

Moln · 19/11/2011 20:16

Oh it wasn't now, trust me I wasn't able to move a finger let alone use the internet.

But DH is ill at the moment and drinking it like it's going out of fashion. It reminded me of my GP calling out to me and telling me to drink lucozade,

I don't get why a medically trained person would suggest it. Unless I missed the beneficial medically properties growing up!

It was the only thing that made me feel better when I had pregnancy nausea.

I still drink it if I'm ill - wouldn't when I'm well though, too sugary. My GP used to suggest flat coke for children with D&V - rehydrates and gives a bit of an energy boost I suppose.

Ineedacleaneriamalazyslattern · 19/11/2011 20:25

They still suggest flat coke and lemonade for d&v.
I drink Lucozade when I'm ill and don't feel like eating and in fact crave it sometimes I suppose the sugar gives me a few empty calories and keeps me going a bit.

south345 · 19/11/2011 20:26

I drink Ribena if I'm poorly it always makes me feel better

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2011 20:28

DH swears by Lucozade for a hangover.

VivaLeBeaver · 19/11/2011 20:29

No but I had a gp tell my 7yo dd to drink lemonade for recurrent urine infections. Hmm

welliesandpyjamas · 19/11/2011 20:29

Glucose, isotonic, etc?

Moln · 19/11/2011 20:36

The traditional one isn't isotonic, it just had loads of sugar in it not electro thingies

I remember only being allowed to have it as a child when I was ill. I thought it was a sort of special medicine. This was in the days when it still had the crinkly orange plastic around the top

Even now I feel guilty drinking it for no particular reason.

Sparklingbrook · 19/11/2011 20:42

What was the cellophane for Gwendoline? I remember it when I was little and my nan was in hospital. It was as if it had medicinal magic properties. Grin

Moln · 19/11/2011 20:43

I think that was what made me think Hmm because as a child I thought it was a special medicine too,

Seem so odd my GP expressing such a childish belief!

OP posts:
GwendolineMaryLacey · 19/11/2011 20:48

Cellophane! That's the word I was looking for :)

Absolutely no idea what that was about but it added to the mystery...

letmehelp · 19/11/2011 20:58

The original lucozade (not sport) was sold as a cure all "tonic" and was very much recommended for people recovering from flu type viruses, when I was young. I remember the hospital doctors telling us we needed to get Grandad to drink it during his last few weeks in hospital.

starfishmummy · 20/11/2011 00:27

If my GP recommended lucozade then he'd also need to prescribe something to stop me being sick. Boak!

Maybe he just suggested it because its what he likes to drink?

slartybartfast · 20/11/2011 00:28

we used to have it as children, but the last time i saw a patient having it on the side of his bed, on the ward, the consultant told him to ditch the lucozade, as it was fattening.
this was in mid 80s

countessbabycham · 20/11/2011 00:32

Our "cure all" as children was lucozade,Bovril crisps, heinz tomato soup and those frozen chocolae mousses.....

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 00:34

Sounds great countess. We had junior disprin. (vile)

countessbabycham · 20/11/2011 00:36

Hahaha.Forgot the junior disprin!

And a particular medicine called kaolin and morphine for bad guts which SURELY must be banned now....

AppleHEAD · 20/11/2011 00:37

A GP told me the sport version is good at replacing minerals and salts into the body.

Sparklingbrook · 20/11/2011 00:38

I remember that too. Was it really morphine? Shock

countessbabycham · 20/11/2011 00:40

Dunno.But it tasted like shit.

If you were faking a bad guts you soon got your arse in to school when that came out!

Grainger · 20/11/2011 00:41

When I was in v early labour with DS1 (not that i made it to late labour... as I got an emergency c section a few hours later) his heart rate and movement were of concern so they gave me some lucozade to drink. I was in the admissions area at the time and they had a bloody cupboard FULL of the stuff. It made an immediate difference (but didn't last, hence section)...
