Don't feel stupid, it can be hard to tell the difference. DD had her first panic attack a couple of weeks ago and the symptoms were quite similar. The thing that gave it away to our GP was the tingly hands and feet DD had. She used the brown paper bag trick for a good 10-15 minutes before her breathing came back under some kind of control.

giraffesCantChaChaCha · 28/09/2011 23:40

Ah all the ventolin won't have helped then. Its good at its job but isn't the nicest thing to have high doses of.

Do you have support for your anxiety/dealing with stress?

BonzoDooDah · 28/09/2011 23:50

Ah good - so glad you're okay. DON'T be embarrassed. It was scary - and the high dose of ventolin would have increased your heart rate and made things worse. You weren't to know.

Hope you can get into a calmer place and sort out your DD without too much more stress.

Most important thing is you were okay. You did the right thing.

PenguinArmy · 28/09/2011 23:59

problem is one can lead to the other and you can't tell when you've crossed over.

Notchattingnow · 29/09/2011 00:15

If its asthma, you need to treat the asthma, not treat as a panic attack.
You can hyperventilate during an asthma attack but thats physiological and is treated differently..
If you r wheezy coughing and sob and several ventolin not working then go to A&E
If you have a history of panic attacks and are not wheezy or coughing just breathing fast then it could be a PA but impossible to tell.
Have you done a Peak flow ?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/09/2011 07:17

Hey FAB.... I'm just glad you're ok. Smile

No embarrassment needed. You didn't know and you took the safest option. Better to be safe than sorry and all that.

TheOriginalFAB · 29/09/2011 07:35

TBH I think the nhs direct woman panicked me more as she said she could hear me wheezing and wouldn't allow me to wait for my inlaws to have the children so dh could drive me to A & E. She decided to send an ambulance. A car and then a van turned up Blush. I had no wheezing and all other tests were fine. The ambulance guy was so kind. I then had a migraine come on and the room was spinning a lot. My blood pressure was on the low side.

This morning I feel very shaky in my arms and legs and trying not to think about school, etc in case it sets me off again. Dh is taking ds1 to look at another school tonight.

Thank you to everyone, you are all fabulous Thanks.

I am building up to another anxiety attack. I am trying to slow my breathing as already my head feels funny. Is that the right thing to do?

OP posts:
addictediam · 29/09/2011 08:42

Start using a paper bag now, slow and steady breathing. Calming thoughts forget about whatts making you anxious.

TheOriginalFAB · 29/09/2011 10:25

Still having trouble. Got the kids to school. Didn't see any teachers. Need to take it easy today.

addictediam · 29/09/2011 10:49

It's horrible isn't it. I have asthma and when i have an attack i always have a panic attack after, which kicks off an asthma attack. It's a crappy cycle. But have found things like calms help when I feel my asthma is getting bad. Is it worth seeing your Dr today and asking if this is a route you want/can take? Just until your alittle less stressed and anxious?

TheOriginalFAB · 29/09/2011 10:53

I can't face ringing the doctor at the moment. I am just resting and trying to regulate my breathing. I am going to start a new thread as I know I am having an anxiety attack.

If you're having to take it much more than you normally do then go and see your GP.

You may have a chest infection or something which requires other medication.

giraffesCantChaChaCha · 29/09/2011 13:37

better to phone dr today than wait until monday. And have weekend like this.

TheOriginalFAB · 29/09/2011 13:44

I am okay, it isn't asthma, just panic attack. I am taking it easy as much as possible.

OP posts:
sausagesandmarmelade · 29/09/2011 14:09

When you feel the panics coming on, you could try the following technique (apparently it's physically impossible to panic when you are doing it).

Breathe in slowly and deeply for a count of 4

then breathe out slowly for a count of 8

keep doing this....and try and think about other things, go for a walk etc

Good luck!

TheOriginalFAB · 29/09/2011 14:17

I am trying to stay calm as I have to go to school soon and I can feel it coming already.

OP posts:
RatherBeOnThePiste · 29/09/2011 15:18

Thinking of you FAB. You'll be at school now I expect. Hope you have managed ok. It sounds like you have a lot to think about.

TheOriginalFAB · 29/09/2011 19:08

Hi, I didn't see any teachers but the head was out but as we had an appointment and I still wasn't feeling great, I decided not to acknowledge her. DS1 said he has had a good day and nothing has happened. He has gone to look at another school with DH. I wish my breathing was back to normal and my heart would stop flitting all over the place.
