i had an ahem labial graze when I gave birth 6 weeks ago. has never bothered me at all and I assumed it was healed. but I am now rather swollen on one side (lord this is embarassing) such that it hurts to wear trousers! can't bear to go to the doc and parade my privates again - has anyone ever had anything so ungraceful? and do I need antibiotics or will it go away by itself? and if so, how long will it take?
I look like little and large down there.

right now I'll go and dig a hole and jump in it

Don't be embarrassed - I am sure we have all suffered delicate complaints from time to time. But do go to the docs. If you do have an infection it could get seriously nasty very quickly. I'm sure the doc will have seen it all a hundred times before.

mears · 23/10/2003 12:08

Princesspeahead - please do not feel embarrassed. Sounds as though you have a bit of infection going on there and will possibly need antibiotics. It might not be related to the graze - there are ducts down there that can become blocked and actually need surgery. I am not saying that to scare you but to emphasise that it is an important area to get checked out. I know what it feels like going and getting your bit poked when you thought you were past all that. Get and appointment on, have a bath, wear a skirt and clean knickers to the surgery and it will be over in less than 5 minutes

NotTheCountess · 23/10/2003 12:08

Oh PPH, giving birth is such a dignified situation isn't it ?! I had a similar (though not identical) problem a month or so ago. I had an itch, due I think to a change in shower gel, I did the stupid thing and ahem, scratched it. Anyway they ballooned up to three OR 4 times their normal size to resemble Mick Jagger YIKES. ! Poor old DH was terrified ! Anyway I went to bed that night and they had 'deflated' when I woke the next morning, glad as I really didn't fancy showing them to my GORGEOUS GP ! It has only ever happened to me that once but I assume it is due to irritation. I would go to the GP/practice nurse about it if things haven't calmed down in 48 hours.

oh bugger. thanks for the advice mears, just what I didn't want to hear and what I know I should do. aurghghghghghg...

its been like this for a couple of days already not the countess (I'm confused - have I missed something - who are you?! dracula or an imposter?) so I'm not expecting a miracle like the one you had.

OP posts:
NotTheCountess · 23/10/2003 12:15

Oh sorry PPH, didn't mean to confuse. Twinkie got me(WSM) and CD confused, I think she was under the impression that CD and I were the same person. I just forgot to change my posting name for this answer !

mears · 23/10/2003 12:15

mumsnet site froze - sorry about that.

mears · 23/10/2003 12:17

PPH - have you had a mirror out and had a good look? Could also just be a spot where a hair has been pulled out .

mears · 23/10/2003 12:19

When women are embarrased I always try and put them at their ease by saying that 'if I see anything that I haven't seen before I'll shoot it'. Perhaps a tad insensitive but it always raises a smile

NotTheCountess · 23/10/2003 12:20

ROFL !!!!

Northerner · 23/10/2003 12:27

I had this too PPh. Mine was an infection and need atibiotic's. You'll have to grin and bear a visit to your GP for yet more prodding and poking I'm afraid.

PS. Love the tone of your 'royal' posts, you sond very regal!

princesspeahead · 23/10/2003 13:24

definitely not a hair.
have just spoken to my sister - she has had this repeated times and in the end has had a couple of operations on her Bartolin's cysts?sp?. seeing the doctor tomorrow and she has told me to have lots of salt baths to try and remove the blockage in a duct, if that is what it is.

aurghghgh (again)

thank you all for not laughing me off mumsnet!

Janstar · 23/10/2003 13:25

If anyone laughed they would be sure to have an 'embarrassing' problem theirselves the following week. Karma

codswallop · 23/10/2003 13:29

Like the line mears.

Blimey poor you. especially when you want to prance around in tight trews to show off your new svelte self.

get to a doctor. Is it a he or a she?

mears · 23/10/2003 13:40

Bartholin's cyst was what I was thinking of. Let us know how you get on tomorrow.

fisil · 23/10/2003 18:17

I had a bartholin cyst when I was 18, and again a year later (on the other side). It started on Sunday morning, and by Tuesday morning (bank holiday) when the Drs opened I wasn't able to talk to the receptionist through the pain. The Doctor gave me anitbiotics which I just threw up (no-one could say whether it was the pain or the antibiotics making me throw up). By the Thursday night I was lying in the bath crying in agony. By Friday lunchtime I was on a recovery trolley in the hospital!

The following year (almost to the day) I felt a familiar pain, I marched straight to the emergency doctor and got myself treated straight away.

Don't be embarrassed, because you need to be really up front about how painful it is, so that you don't get to the stage I did!

princesspeahead · 23/10/2003 18:22

oh lord fisil that sounds awful. my sis said that since I wasn't in pain yet (just uncomfortable from the swelling) that it was just blocked and not yet infected. she said that when hers was infected (and formed into an abscess) if they had given her a scalpel she would have done the surgery herself it hurt so much.
she said that antibiotics didn't work on her either once it had got infected.
oh joy.
think of me sitting in a bath containing a full tub of SAXA this evening..!

OP posts:
fisil · 23/10/2003 19:00

I will be thinking about you. Sorry not to be more positive, but it was extreme agony.

nursie · 23/10/2003 19:03

I think I had this too. Uncomfortable, isn't it? I had lots of warm baths and washed very carefully.
I think it took till ds was about 8 weeks before I could sit down without thinking.
I hope you feel better soon. It does sound like a trip to the GP might not be a bad idea. Reading these posts, I probably should have done. Oops.

hoxtonchick · 23/10/2003 20:23

I had a bartholin cyst too, and just like fisil, ended up having an operation to sort it out. Via A&E in my case, & my first taste of pethidine..... So maybe you haven't got one, PPH, 'cos you certainly know about it if you have. I thought I was getting another one a few months ago & was practically banging the GP's door down to get antibiotics as they do work if you take them soon enough. Lots of luck at the doctor.

princesspeahead · 23/10/2003 20:30

thank you everyone.
is the op under general? and how long did you stay in?
my sis had hers done in the middle east and I'd like to know what they usuallly do here...

OP posts:
hoxtonchick · 23/10/2003 20:58

Yes, mine was under general. I was told they could have tried antibiotics but as I have diabetes they wanted to deal with it asap. I only stayed in hospital for one night I think, all a bit hazy. Definitely went to my parents for a week to recuperate though...

princesspeahead · 23/10/2003 21:00

eurgh.
right I'm off for ANOTHER salt bath. God I wish I had a bidet!
