He went for appt with dermatologist tonight and has a mole on his face that is cancerous. We are both in shock. I haven't the first idea what happens now. He has to have an operation asap.

very best wishes. 2 friends of mine (same age - 36) have had melanomas removed following a lot of sun exposure. Never an issue since AFAIK for either of them. Hope you find out more - glad op is tomorrow.

baubleloo · 15/12/2005 15:34

So sorry to hear this Gingerbear.
If it's any consolation my mum had a very bad melonoma on her face about 20 years ago,she had it removed, had to go for lots of check up's,but has completely recovered and is now absolutely fine.

suedonim · 15/12/2005 16:41

Sorry to hear about your dh, Gingerbear. My sister had a melanoma removed from her arm about 15yrs ago. She then had some lymph nodes removed about 12yrs ago and ever since has been fine. Good luck to your dh for tomorrow.

anorak · 15/12/2005 16:49

I feel bad that the doctor didn't give your DH a bit more information

My dad had this for years, he had to go and have a check-up every six months and liquid nitrogen treatment for any moles that had changed shape etc. He has been told all clear now, he's 72 and fit as a fiddle.

Cadeauxbury · 15/12/2005 16:56

Gingerbear

I'm sorry to hear this. My prayers for a speedy and complete recovery are with your dh and for peace for you. You know where I am if you want to chat

Hi

Sorry to hear your news.

Can i recommend the Macmillan Cancer Relief information line details here ; used to work for them and I never yet came across someone who didn't benefit from their support- they're very good for signposting as well as information.

Thoughts with you all X

gggimmesnowsnow · 15/12/2005 17:36

My bil had this, years ago; two moles on his thigh were removed. He has had regular checkups and has to wear trousers, no shorts, in summer and is brilliant.

Wishing you all the best.

Hulababy · 15/12/2005 17:46

Gingerbear - so sorry to hear this. I hope you can find out more soon, and that the op takes place asap. Take care.

LadySherlockofLGJ · 15/12/2005 17:48

Aw Ginger sweetheart, thinking of you and praying for you all.

Much love

LGJ

Blandmum · 15/12/2005 17:53

If it is a rodent ulcer, don't panic, they are almost benign. If it is melanoma, things are a bit more complicated, but as loads on Mnetters have posted many, many people do just fine with this as well.

I know how this feels, dh has survived on cancer and now has an unrelated slow form of leukemia. It shouds horrible when you get the d=iagnosis. I wanted to run away! But things are improving all the time and for many, many people cancer is a survivable disease now.

Don't rush to look for statistics until you have more info, you will only worry more, if you are like me . I hope that everything goes well for you both and I am sending you every best wish possible

tamum · 15/12/2005 18:02

It doesn't really sound like a rodent ulcer though to be honest, if it's in a mole. The good thing is that the clinicians I work beside always say that melanomas on the face are usually the best because they inevitably get picked up early; it's the ones on backs that are the hardest to treat. I will be thinking of you; good luck with it all.

sunchowder · 15/12/2005 18:04

Sorry to hear this Ginger...my thoughts are with you and hope everything turns out alright.

cupcakesbakingonanopenfire · 15/12/2005 18:08

Good luck for tomorrow, GB. At least they are dealing with it quickly.

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 15/12/2005 20:04

Good luck, GB....my Dad had a rodent ulcer years ago, no problem sorting it, hope its one of those.
Martianbishop, does your DH have hairy cell, by any chance? One of my best friends has it, its pretty rare I hear...she's doing great, good luck to your DH too.

GingerBearingGifts · 16/12/2005 20:27

he had is op - took 20 minutes and he has 4 stitches and will have a fetching scar on his cheek. Surgeon was suprised that the consultant dermatologist told DH that it was cancerous straight away. Results back after Christmas. We are trying to forget about it until then.

Blandmum · 16/12/2005 20:35

Glad to hear that the op has been done so swiftly and 'easily' (phyical IYSWIM)

in answer to the question dh has CLL ....has a check up on wed wich I am getting into a state about

Hope that the results are as good as possible GN, keeping all my fingers crossed for you

GingerBearingGifts · 16/12/2005 20:36

NotHavingXmasInChicagomum · 16/12/2005 20:37

GB haven't been around for a few days so missed this. Fingers crossed for good results. BTW my mother and my aunt in law have both have had malignant "skin cancer" moles removed and no further treatment (5 years and 8 years ago respectivelty) Hope that helps offers furtjer hope. Do try and put it to the back of youe mind and enjoy christmas. Will be thinking of you both. CM

Blandmum · 16/12/2005 20:39

I shouldn't faff, as the docs have said this could just 'bump along' for 15 years before he needs treatment. We are also lucky in that one of is dbsis a perfect bone marrow match. but i still worry, which is daft!

Silly cow, tha's me!

Blandmum · 16/12/2005 20:39

Sounds as if he did all the right things gb, and went to the doc etc. Hoping that all is fine.

Janh · 16/12/2005 20:40

Not daft at all mb, of course you will worry.

GB, hope results for DH are clear .

EliBeentoSantasGrotto · 16/12/2005 21:08

GB, glad the op is over and done with. Statistically, the 'minor' skin cancers (if that DOES turn out to be what it was) are much much more common than the the 'major' ones...hope you are able to have a good Xmas, knowing you have done all you can for now.
MB, of course you're going to worry! I'm glad its the least mean sort, but still - wouldn't be human not to be worrying, hey. Good luck for Wednesday, hope it brings mega-reassurance in time for the festivities.

Hulababy · 16/12/2005 21:19

GB - glad the op went well. Good luck for the results in the New Year.

Enjoy your Christmas.

misdee · 16/12/2005 21:39

GB, my uncle has a scar on his cheek, and i always thought it was from his time in the Gulf, it wasnt untill i asked a few years back that he told he'd had skin cancer, they cut it out, anf no treatment was needed IIRC. hope the same goes for your DH.
