Just back from the DRs.

He was facinated said he hadn't really seen it before lots of ooohing and aaahing.

Thought it must be a bit nothingy if very painful, even though he has told me to go back and see him on Friday.

Just stupidly googled it and it says it can cause blindness!!

So anyone any experience please. Thanks

HarkTheHeraldAIMSMUMsings · 05/12/2005 18:47

Yeah it is cold sores of the eyes!! Just what I always wanted!!

I've never had a coldsore in my life, so do I get my first one on the lip like a normal person...no I get them in my eyes!!

I have zivirax (sp) to use and painkillers to take.

I'll have to be careful not to pass it on to DD!

OP posts:
followthestarlover · 05/12/2005 18:49

i wonder if you will keep getting it. because the herpes virus lives in your body and just flares up at random doesn't it? you don't ever get rid of it...

so if anyone says "what's wrong with your eyes?" will you tell them? lol

HarkTheHeraldAIMSMUMsings · 05/12/2005 18:52

Thanks for making me feel so much better about it

I shall go into work tomorrow and flutter my eyelashes evily at anyone who annoys me!! [evil laugh]

Pity I have 3 christmas "dos" this week!!

When I saw this thread title I thought.. 'wow.. what an innovative-sounding cover version of that sick-making song 'Christmas In Your Eyes'!

But seriously.. it sounds yuk.. I hope it's better soon and with no lasting effects!

SJ x

HarkTheHeraldAIMSMUMsings · 05/12/2005 19:00

I could change my christmas name to that then couldn't I SJ??

Being the voice of dooooom is no bad thing....as things can only get better then!! Or something!!

I know Fimbo, I'm starting to think I am very very unlucky Still it could be worse it's not all that noticable just sore!!

followthestarlover · 05/12/2005 19:08

that's lovely! you should definitely keep it

zippimistletoes · 05/12/2005 19:12

umm that sounds horrible (eye herpes)

do you mean on your eyelids?

as for passing it on both exh and I had cold sores from time to time but didn't pass them on to children by avoiding kissing when suffering

hope you fel better soon

SueW · 05/12/2005 19:14

No offence to your GP but I think you should be seeing someone with a little more experience. Someone I worked with had this and had his eye bandaged for weeks, even months.

Do you have a local eye casualty? Can you call NHS Direct?

HarkTheHerpesAIMSMUMsings · 05/12/2005 20:08

Thanks SL

It is just on my elelids and the edge very close to the eyeball, Zippi.

I have to go back if it hasn't started to clear up by Friday SueW, but if it gets worse before then, I will go back sooner. There is an eye clinic in my local hospital so if it gets really bad I'll go there.

I think it is much worse, from what I have read, if it goes on the actual eyeball. But thanks, I will keep an eye (no pun intended) on it

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 05/12/2005 20:14

I had a coldsore in the corner of my eye a while ago.
It dried up really quickly and to stop it itchng I just put vaseline on it.
I spoke to the pharmasist who said I should realy see the GP but it had started to dry up by then so I didn't bother.

HarkTheHerpesAIMSMUMsings · 05/12/2005 21:11

Thanks LTH did it just clear up in a few days then?

I have just applied the cream and it nipped like hell, and I couldn't see for about 5/10mins. I have to use it 5 times a day for about a week so that should be fun!!

notasheep · 05/12/2005 21:28

Hi Harktheherald.. my brother has had herpes in his eye...dont wish to be negative, but he was told it will never leave his system,he will go ages then suddenly it will flare up-normally in the winter and under stress,he caught his playing Rugby in the scrum, and has been very poorly at times, his is probably a very serious case but i do feel you should know of all experiences. He goes to a specialist eye hospital in Oxford.May be worth getting as much information as possible from a GP who knows alot about eyes

HappyMumof2TurtleDoves · 05/12/2005 21:42

is your GP sure it's herpes Aimsmum?

How horrible for you

How's dd btw?

singersgirl · 05/12/2005 23:49

Yes, my mum had it too and unfortunately it caused scarring that blocked the tear duct on her affected eye - she's had to have two operations to put a drainage tube in. But I think in her case it was because they didn't realise it was herpes and were just treating her for conjunctivitis with antibiotics, which of course didn't help. Sounds a bit doom and gloom, but I think if left untreated (which yours isn't) it can be serious. I'm sure now you know what it is you will be straight back to the GP if it gets worse.

ChicPea · 05/12/2005 23:51

Could it be shingles? I would recommend you see an ophthalmologist asap as any ulcer in the eye whatever the nature is serious. No disrepect to your GP but they are very general and don't always give the right advice. I saw a GP for very bad back pain and he prescribed Ibuprofen gel to apply and when I had an MRI scan (privately) I was told I had a slipped disc!! I would see somebody ASAP.

chipmonksRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 06/12/2005 00:43

Agree with ChicPea. Better to see an ophthalmologist, though normally if it's just on the lid it won't affect you, just if it spreads to the cornea. But a GP can't examine the cornea in the same detail as an opthalmologist, who will have the necessary equipment. The type of meds used are very important too.
