Agonisingly painful left hip..... OUCHHHHHHHHHHH

WSM · 17/10/2003 08:59

For as long as I can remember I've had 'clicky hips' which ache slightly (not enough to cause me any probs with mobility). DH always remarks that I have the noisiest hips in town ! Over the last few days my left hip has become increasingly painful, to the point where it is now eye-wateringly painful to weight-bear . Getting up the stairs is painful enough, but add my 26lb DD to the mix and it is agony. It feels like my hip will give way. The pain is like a ring of burning ache around the very top of my thigh (prob around the 'head' of my ball and socket joint). It is a burning ache when I'm stationary but when I attempt to put weight on it it feels like a lot of painful 'pressure', IYSWIM. I'm not overweight (5ft 7ins, and around 9st 10lbs) or pregnant and have no real history of joint problems, aside from the background ache and 'clicking'. They make and audible 'click' at least 3 times a day (usually in the evening).

Does anyone have any ideas of what this might be and/or suffer a similar thing ? Though I am loathe to visit the doc about it I have made an appt for 11.20 this morning.

WSM that sounds soooo painful, hope the doc can help and also give you something strong for the pain. I can't give you any advice I'm afraid, only sympathy...
Let us know what the doc says
Hugs!

btw, I have a clicky jaw, shall we form a 'clicky band'?

lou33 · 17/10/2003 09:49

You have to get this looked at by the doc wsm, because he will be able to have a look and see if it is dislocating etc. Good luck, let me know how you get on. Btw I have clicky ,crap joints too.

Girly · 17/10/2003 09:51

Sorry wsm, no advice, hope you feel better soon. Sounds like you need some horse strenght pain killers.

Its not dislocated is it?

BTW if carrying your dd is adding to it try a Hipseat, I have for ds and it does take the strain off as it evens out the load. HTH

It didn't get worse or better when I was pregnant either. It's so bad that I'm going to have to get a cab to the surgery as I just can't do the 15min walk I don't think it is pregnancy/post-natal related as I've always had dodgy hips and it has only just become really bad in the last 3/4 days (my DD is 14mo). I do hope that they can sort it and not just fob me off with painkillers.

WSM,

hips are my speciality,my left one was replaced in March.

It could be that you have always had a mis-shapen hip joint (lots do but never know) which may have been wearing unevenly over the years. If you have worn away the lining cartledge stuff then it will cause the joint to grate and hurt. They should be able to see this on an xray, then you'de be advised to have a replacement or resurface (new technique, much better for younger candidates provided hip isn't too deformed, Mine was ).

In the meantime, try taking glucosamine and chondroitin, to boost the production of the lining cartlege, and magnet therapy to ease the pain.

Let us know what the doc says

hth

Frenchgirl · 17/10/2003 21:34

WSM, how did it go at the doctor's? How are you now?

WSM · 18/10/2003 09:58

Hi all. Here is run-down of my toatllay disasterous day....

Went to the docs. Had to geta cab there and the stupid f taxi driver didn't even attempt to help me out of the taxi with my big heavy 3 wheeler, grrrrrr. Having FINALLY got into my doctors appointment a full hour after my actual appt time (tsk, tsk), practically crying in pain, the doc had a feel and told me that he was unhappy with my lack of range of motion. He also noted that 'they are very loud aren't they?!'. I have to go for an x-ray and see an Orthapaedic surgeon for a proper diagnosis as GP was unable to pin-point it from his examination. I should have gone str8 the hospital fot the x-ray but couldn't due to childcare logistics! Will have to wait until Mon. Anyway, I hobbled to the chemist for my prescription of anti-inflammatories (scary as are ones for Rheumatoid Arthritis and other terrifying degenerative bone conditions ).

Hobbled home in tears, walk should have taken 15 mins, took 50 mins. Got hom,e only to realise that I'd locked myself out !!! Cue hysterics, as no neighbours have keys. Luckily had my mobile so called a friend who lives about 25min walk from me who came to collect DD & I in her car and took me sobbing pathetically back to her house. Couldn't call DH as he was in Newmarket (we're in Worcs) all day and his mob was off. Then panicked as there was no way I could get DS2 from school at 3.30 (couldn't walk). So again friend came to my rescue and collected DS2 from school, bringing him back to her house, where we waited for hours until DH came to get us all at around 6.30pm. My friend (who is preg with her 2nd, 1st being 10 months old), changed all my DD's nappies as I couldn't walk up the stairs or even get into the right position to change her. She was fab. She's really suffering this pregnancy (morning sickness and tiredness) but she really came through for me. What a star, I owe her the biggest thanks.

P.S. Forgot to say that GP thinks it is skeletal and so unlikely to be trapped nerve or muscle damage. He suspects damage to the head of my femur (the 'ball' part of the joint).

Thanks twiglett (and everyone else who has helped)

I've been given NAPROXEN (also known as Arthroxen, Napratec, Naprosyn, Nycopren, Pranoxen Continus, and Synflex). I was told that they in reducing the inflammation causing the pain (all guess work on the GP's side of course), the pain should subside. I was offered further painkillers but refused, wish I hadn't now Pain is slightly better today but is still affecting my mobility greatly.

I CAN'T HAVE ARTHRITIS, I'M 21 FFS !!!!

LOL Twigglett, thanks for the advice. Do you find that your DH's problems mean much of a 'diversion' from 'normal' family life ? By that I mean does he find it difficult to do things with the kids, how often does he have an 'attack' IYSWIM ?

Much appreciated. Will try not to panic until I get a diagnosis

Thanks for the info twigglett. Here's hoping one of these trial drugs will be an answer to your DH's probs. X-ray tomorrow and then a 2 week wait for the results, will let you know how I get on.

Well, looking on the 'bright side' for a mo Twigglett, things can't be that bad if you managed D?2 .

My hip is almost back to normal today, still clicky and a bit achy but at least I can walk without too much discomfort today. Part of me is convinced that the x-ray will show nothing and I'll look like a big drama queen . OTOH, I really am scared that something scary and long term will show up. I have thought about not going for the x-ray but then what if I have another 'attack' in a few months time ? I'll wish I'd got it checked out.

WSM

please, please, please go for your X-ray. Nothing can be done if you don't know what the problem is, and it could just be something easy to deal with..
Look arthritis at 21 isn't that unusual, and it isn't necessarily a huge prob either.
If it's something needs surgery, then that can be dealt with. it's inconvenient at the time, but once over it your quality of life would be much better.

I know I've had a horrendous time with mine, but would tell anyone to go and get investigated.

WSM · 20/10/2003 14:27

Have just got back from my xray, done by a very sweet student Still have to wait 10 - 14 days for the report though . Will post the result on here when I get it. Thanks for the help, support and advice.
