Can't believe I did this. Poor ds has come out in a horrendous rash as a result of his Augmentin therapy. Augmentin contain amoxycillin which can causean allergic response in conjunction with glandular fever. Ds woke up this morning with a horrendous rash which is even on the palms of his hands and is itchy. I checked with Dr. that it was OK to give Piriton. Definately was. The only Piriton I had was syrup. The bottle said to give adults 12 spoonfuls which I duly did. However, after administering said amount I realised that was the TOTAL DAILY dose. I had given 24mg when it should have been 4mg. I phoned the doctor who said not to worry too much as it would only make him sleepy. He said to not let him go out incase he fell asleep in a bus shelter or something !!!
He actually hasn't fallen asleep so that is OK. I can't believe I was so stupid. DS just looked me in the eye and said sarcastically 'thankyou very much'
I just got confused with paediatric doses and syrups. One thing is for sure, he doesn't have an itch now

pupuce · 14/10/2003 20:23

Thank you for making me laugh......
we're all human and obvisously you're a bit stressed but I am sure you're giving him lots of TLC!

Angiel · 14/10/2003 20:24

OOh I've done something like this before. My dh's family has a history of allergy to anaesthetics, so we have to assume that my children are also allergic.

When all 3 of them came down with chicken pox at the same time, I was desperate for them to sleep during the night. I spoke to the Doctor and he agreed that I should dose them all up on phenergan to knock them out.

When I read the label on the bottle a few days later, I nearly passed out when I realised that the active ingredient in Phenergan is one of the ones they could be allergic to. Bloody lucky I didn't kill them!

WideWebWitch · 14/10/2003 20:25

OMG Mears! 12 spoonfuls! Made me laugh too, glad he's OK

JanHR · 14/10/2003 20:29

12 spoonfuls OMG. Glad everything is ok.

boyandgirl · 14/10/2003 20:44

I've always suffered dreadfully from motion sickness, and once on a long journey when I was about 19 I took my sister's bottle of phenergan syrup and self-dosed. I couldn't pour spoonsful in the moving car so I just swigged from the bottle. And when I still felt rough I swigged again...and then again...and again... By the time we got to our destination the bottle was nearly empty and I was thoroughly stoned. But I didn't feel ill!

mears · 14/10/2003 20:52

Funny thing was after 8 spoonfuls he said he felt sick! I gave him some lucozade to wash it down with then gave him the other 4

Mears, hope your DS is ok. Good to see you are only human, and not just the breastfeeding goddess that we know you really are.

pupuce · 14/10/2003 20:57

Now let's call the NSPCC

Angeliz · 14/10/2003 21:04

oh that did make me laughsorry! My mum was watching my two nephews once aged 1 and 2, and they both had conjuctavitis! She took drops from sisters fridge and put in both kids eyes before realising they were ear drops for their dad!!! After calls to NHS Direct they were fine fortunately i think it was the antibiotics instead of the wax one!!! We all do make mistakes.but i've told my dd, if nana ever tries to put anything in your eyes, run!!!!!

JJ · 14/10/2003 21:11

Um, thank you for a huge laugh. Happens to the best of us. (We are, quite obviously, the best.) Glad all is well. Your poor son and, sheesh, poor you! Augmentin is huge stuff and I know people don't react well sometimes. Hope you find a viable alternative.

Marina · 14/10/2003 21:15

Pupuce, I quite agree. What a terrible thing to do to a poor innocent child! Glad he's OK Mears and thanks for giving us all a chuckle.

musica · 14/10/2003 21:31

Mears, I'm really glad you started this thread and not someone else!!! If I'd been you, I'd have lost count half way through the 12 spoonfuls, and have had to guess!!

katierocket · 14/10/2003 21:34

mears - sorry, but did laugh at this - particularly the making him drink lucozade. really though, hope he's OK
LOL

mears · 14/10/2003 22:01

He is absolutely fine. I keep laughing every time I tell anyone what I did. He obviously does not react to piriton in a normal way. He hasn't even fely drowsy. I gave it to him at 2.15pm and he is still wide wake!

ROFL, Mears!! Hope he doesn't have a hangover when he wakes up tomorrow morning.

You're not the only one, though. My ds's wife had a headache and she asked him to get her some paracetamol tabelts. She spotted later that he had given her Immodium instead, and she wasn't able to do a poo for about four days!! It took her mind off her headache, at any rate.

katierocket · 14/10/2003 22:04

mears - maybe it will have the opposite affect and he'll be up all night

Angeliz · 14/10/2003 22:06

mears now you're here can i ask you a toddler quetion? I asked before but you'd gone...

mears · 14/10/2003 22:09

Quick - ask away - DH wants on the computer.

ok, dd is 2.6 and doesn't like fresh milk i am not wrried as she gets plenty of dairy. the thing is she begs for her formula so i still give her a bottle in the morn.is this o.k at her age?

mears · 14/10/2003 22:15

It will do her no harm if you can be bothered to give her it. As you rightly say she does not actually need it as you give her plenty of dairy. I did not give my children milk to drink because they did not like it when they were toddlers. However, they all drink it when they feel like it now. I have read of other mumsnetters slowly mixing formula with milk until eventually the formula is replaced by milk without the child realising it. Probably worth it to save you money if nothing else
