Can't believe I did this. Poor ds has come out in a horrendous rash as a result of his Augmentin therapy. Augmentin contain amoxycillin which can causean allergic response in conjunction with glandular fever. Ds woke up this morning with a horrendous rash which is even on the palms of his hands and is itchy. I checked with Dr. that it was OK to give Piriton. Definately was. The only Piriton I had was syrup. The bottle said to give adults 12 spoonfuls which I duly did. However, after administering said amount I realised that was the TOTAL DAILY dose. I had given 24mg when it should have been 4mg. I phoned the doctor who said not to worry too much as it would only make him sleepy. He said to not let him go out incase he fell asleep in a bus shelter or something !!!
He actually hasn't fallen asleep so that is OK. I can't believe I was so stupid. DS just looked me in the eye and said sarcastically 'thankyou very much'
I just got confused with paediatric doses and syrups. One thing is for sure, he doesn't have an itch now

oh you are a good mum, i'm sure! Everyone makes mistakes..my dd fell off a double bed when she was about 5 months

prufrock · 15/10/2003 08:58

I saw the title of this and thought "Oh no, Mumsnet really has got bitchy!"
LOL Mears - good to know you are human too.

Demented · 15/10/2003 10:12

LOL Mears!!!

Hope your DS is OK though.

oliveoil · 15/10/2003 10:50

Prufrock - I thought that too, and was rolling up my sleeves ready for a indignant 'how dare you?' .

My dd was sick a lot yesterday (caught bug?) so being a paranoid mum I put her in bed with me 'to be on the safe side'. She only fell off the bed, whilst I was snoozing away 'being watchful', would have been safer in her cot .

Grommit · 15/10/2003 11:08

And I thought you were perfect Mears with all your excellent advice!

motherinferior · 15/10/2003 11:19

Oh, I feel so much less inferior now!

No side effects at all from overdose. Rash is 10 times worse today. Hope it starts to fade soon. He certainly is pretty down just now

LOL Mears. On such a sad day (my grandad's funeral) I needed a good laugh!

rainbow · 15/10/2003 18:16

Hope the rash clears up soon

janh · 15/10/2003 20:50

mears, I asked DD1 about her 2 friends in Y11 - I was half right, one was ill Jan/Feb but had recovered by June, the other became ill after "stand-down day" and actually did her GCSEs while suffering. (Mind you that one is a very clever girl and now at Med School!)

HTH.

dejags · 15/10/2003 21:52

Mears, hope the rash clears up soon...

Janstar · 19/10/2003 19:35

Mears, just saw this and had to find out who had dared to call you a d**khead!!

Just a case of the roofer's (my dad's) roof being the only one that leaks I guess!

At home, you switch off, but at work, you are honed to perfection, I think

Tissy · 19/10/2003 19:56

Mears, I got a rash when a university Dr prescribed me amoxycillin for a sore throat. When I went back to him, he said,"must be glandular fever, then!". That didn't inspire me with confidence in his diagnostic skills! The rash was gone within a week. Hope your son is better soon.

LOL mears Gave me a good laugh!

The worst one I heard was from my GP (also a personal friend) who's husband hurt his back playing squash one night. He begged and begged her to give him something out of her bag so he could get some sleep. She handed him 2 'dihydrocoedine' - half an hour later he had a wee whisky and went to bed. When she went to put the tablets back in her bag she relaised she had in fact given him a very potent sedative normally used for acute schizophrenics who need calmed down 10 mins ago! And never to be mixed with alcohol! She sat up in bed all night listening to him breathing, and he had a bit of a headache the next day ......
