We're all in the same boat, but have to go through it

You have my sympathies, and you have just reminded me that i am due one in a few weeks.

I have had many an abnormal smear result, and other probs so should be very used to the whole thing as i have several a year, but i still hate them. THey are incredibly painful for me also, only recently found out that its due to the colposcopy's i had many years ago!

Just remind yourself that we all go through it, it only lasts a few minutes and then all over for hopefully 3 years? is it now?

LadyTophamHatt · 07/11/2005 11:59

before I had ds3 I was, now I couldn't care less.

TMI but I hardly felt anything

expatinscotland · 07/11/2005 12:00

No. I keep up on these after having had CINII, a colpo and a LEEP in 2001.

Springchicken · 07/11/2005 12:00

You're not a prat, rickman, it's just that keeping up on these tests is VITAL! MUCH rather have regular smears than colpos and LEEPS or cervical cancer. Yuk.

Lonelymum · 07/11/2005 12:16

At least you have an appt Rickman. I keep getting reminder letters and can't bring myself to make an appt. I just hate the embarrassment factor and always fear they are going to hurt though I can't say they ever have.

My doc had to have agood rumage around up there because my cervix is/was so far back.
It wasn't even uncomfortable.

You're much nicer that me rickman I was going to say bucket cu*t

Twiglett · 07/11/2005 12:25

you HAVE to go Rickman .. my last smear was abnormal and I had a loop excision in August .. so its possibly uncomfortable but it could SAVE YOUR LIFE

stop being a pansy

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 12:25

They are horrible I agree, nobody enjoys them I'm sure! Last time it took her ageeees to find my cervix and it was a nightmare. Brilliant nurse though and no 'passing traffic'! Always good to get back your letter saying all is clear - and if it's not, well, it's a good job you went!! Not worth missing it - grit your teeth hun and it will over soon!

Gobbledigook · 07/11/2005 12:26

My SIL is only 30 and last year had some of her cervix cut away - now she is pg she has had to have a stitch put in. She's fine but it does show you the importance of going.

Springchicken · 07/11/2005 12:27

I know this is Rickman's thread but just wanted to say I am going to make an appointment this afternoon. whether I go or not is another story but I will make an appointment.

LadyTophamHatt · 07/11/2005 12:27

I think I even told the doc whil ehe was rummaging that I couldn't feel it{shock]

I am a bucket.

DinoIsBack · 07/11/2005 12:28

They didn't used to bother me, but I have to make an appointment to have one shortly, and I really don't want to.

NotActuallyAMum · 07/11/2005 12:28

Let's face it, none of us like them do we? But it has to be done

My sisters sister-in-law (her DHs sister) always refused point blank to go - don't know why - and she got cervical cancer at the age of 41. Because she'd never had a smear, it was too late for her by the time they found out and she died aged 42, leaving two sons aged 10 and 8

I'm not trying to scare anyone (honest!) but please don't put it off!

Twiglett · 07/11/2005 12:35

you're bothered about a single smear .. I have to go for another 'examination to check you've healed' and then another smear and colposcopy and then again 6 months later

pah .. you're just a pansy

pansy, pansy ... go and have yer smear yer big baby pansy

Twiglett · 07/11/2005 12:36

ps thanks for reminding me to make the appointments cos I'd forgetten

now where was I?

oh yes

pansy, pansy Rickman is a pansy

I got a reinder letter yesterday.. Not that it's all that bad....just think I am in a state 'down there'!! (having had 2 babies in 18 months!)

Anyway....not scare mongering...but these things are sooooo important. I have lost my nana (June 2001), an aunt has had a hysterectomy due to cancerous cells....laser treatment didn't work...... It's not hereditory (so I have been yold by the nurse) but all the same, As much as I wish I could avoid it.....I will be going asap....(just going to sort my hairy bits out first )

HRHQoQ · 07/11/2005 13:01

Have to say I "missed" my last one - I know it's going to hurt more than for most people as I'm still suffering from Vaginismus......how DS2 came to be is still a mystery really - as I had it before concieving him, and when I found out I was pg still had it !

saadia · 07/11/2005 14:08

Gosh I hate them too but at my first one, a brilliant nurse did it who really put me at my ease and made it much easier than it might have been.

But, when I was pg with ds2 I had to have an internal exam and at the hospital the nurse was awful, I couldn't relax, the instrument got stuck and she actually said if you don't relax it will have to stay there - really helpful comment - so now I am dreading it.

moondog · 07/11/2005 14:14

rickman, that is so bloody awful about people coming into the room while you were having it done. I'm not surprised you're a bit freaked out.
Merits a stiff letter and a namecheck of the nurse responsible.

Was this at the GP's?
I find the Well Woman/women only contraceptive clinics much pleasanter places with 'lady doctors' (as my dear grandmother would say!) who really make an effort to put you at ease.

You'll (or rather they) be in and out in minutes and then hopefully nothing to worry about for another three years.

Go!

Twiglett · 07/11/2005 14:23

pansy [sniff]

nutcracker · 07/11/2005 14:25

I was well overdue for mine but made myself go a couple of mths ago and it wasn't half as bad as I expected and I was really pleased with myself for getting it over and done with for another 3 years.
