Centerparcs vomiting bug

li33i · 11/04/2011 14:38

Hi everyone. We've just returned from centerparcs Nottingham .. Had to come back early as my ds (21 months) caught a vomiting bug after going in the baby pool there. Now myself and my husband have had it too. Has anyone else had this experience? Centerparcs will not comment or give any refund as they said their hygiene is good. Xx

A couple of years ago 4 of us got vomiting bugs. Horrendous trip back from centerparks... shudder at memory. Found it hard not to link to park though obviously have no proof. [suffolk one]. Have not been to cp since.

reikizen · 11/04/2011 14:47

I don't think you can blame cp can you? Aren't vomiting bugs just par for the course with kids (or is that just mine!)

PaperView · 11/04/2011 14:49

WE all just had a vomiting bug but none of us have been to CP.

greencaveman · 11/04/2011 14:52

You can't blame centreparcs. The fact is, parents are selfish and take children to public places whilst they are not clear of illness - that's why your DS would have caught it. Nothing centreparcs can do about it even with good hygiene because some of the bugs can be caught just in the air without even touching anything.

greencaveman · 11/04/2011 14:52

Sorry, meant to add that rather than pursuing centerparcs, you need to claim on your travel insurance.

ScarlettWalking · 11/04/2011 14:56

I also think this is due to dreadful parents who don't wait for their children yo recover before contact with others. I would have liked to sue a few of those in my time......

DooinMeCleanin · 11/04/2011 14:59

We have been to CenterParcs Nottingham every year for almost 10 years now and have never had a problem.

Dd1 did get a bout of really bad (almost needed hospital treatment) a couple of years back while we were there but she later admitted to eating 'funny coloured' snow Hmm from the garden of the Challet, so not the fault of CP. She also suffers from ongoing bowel troubles, so it might not even have been the snow.

leolion · 11/04/2011 18:45

Thats interesting OP. We went to CP Nottingham last year and both my dd's had terrible all night vomiting after being in the toddler pool that day. By a process of elimination, I've always felt it was the pool. I did report it at the time, and the staff were great. They asked a whole lot of questions and tested specimins from the girls, but nothing came up. They did advise that it could have been the amount of water the girls swallowed that caused the vomiting, and I feel that this is probably the case as they were splashing and going down the slides a lot more than they do when we normally take them swimming. None of us got it either, so I think this might have been the case with my dd's. I must say that apart from that, we had a great time there.

ManicPanic · 11/04/2011 22:24

Oh DooinMeCleanin, you made me chuckle and bleurgh at the same time with 'funny coloured snow' Grin

Karia · 11/04/2011 22:34

Yep, got nasty D&V from Elveden after accidentally swallowing some pool water. :(. My dad caught it too. I don't go swimming any more when I go!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 11/04/2011 22:35

Why on earth would they give a refund?

Artichokes · 11/04/2011 22:41

I have three separate friends/acquaintances whose families got terrible D&V at Centre Parcs. It's put me off ever going.

Karia · 12/04/2011 10:43

Forgot to mention pretty much every time my mum went swimming there she got a nasty infection, and the onsite medical facilities are (or were) rubbish :(.

Still love Center Parcs though. Last time I went to Elveden I saw a huge grass snake!

Lizzywishes · 12/04/2011 18:16

We caught foul bugs at centre parcs and GP said people often pick things up there.

donnie · 12/04/2011 18:18

this thread title is a bit dodgy though - it will probably be deleted very soon for legal reasons.

LIZS · 12/04/2011 18:28

Surely you can catch such things wherever you go and there is a crowd of people especially kids Hmm . Presumably your ds doesn't yet go to nursery ? ds threw up at Sands but would never have considered pursuing it with them other than to notify. Agree if you lost days of holiday then you could look at your travel insurance (assuming you have some) but you'd pay the with excess and need a doctor's certificate.

gingerolivia · 12/04/2011 18:47

we all caught norovirus at Nottingham one about 2 years ago, CP were brilliant at investigating as it was first thought (and in a local paper) that it was food poisoning, we were sent a family day pass as compensation. We've stayed since and been fine. With so many people in one place you are bound to pick stuff up - Antibacterial gel is my current OCD

MmeSurvivedLent · 12/04/2011 18:51

Not sure that you can blame CParcs though.

Blame the parents who take their DC to the pool, even though they have a bug.

Or is there anything that a company can do to ensure that bugs would be killed off by the chemicals in the pool?

Presumably though, if they use too harsh or too many chemicals, then they will get complaints about that too.

Nicnocknoo · 12/04/2011 20:41

Much as we loved cp - I now refuse to go. The last visit was two years ago when ds2 got d&v bug from the baby pool, and then so did I. The previous year my dad was horrendously sick there. I agree it is more the fault of the parents - I remember a toddler in the changing room area with runny poo coming out his nappy on the floor and people just having to walk through it. CP was fab but now my only memories are of sick and my ds2 up to his neck in a poo filled grobag.

Unfortunately, not all parents adhere to the 48hr rule - ds1 has a vomiting condition and that realisation makes me v angry. I can't ban my kids from the pool (they love it) there so we just don't go anymore.

minxthemanx · 12/04/2011 20:47

Oh no! How depressing! We're going to Elveden for the first ever visit to CP this weekend - have saved up and been looking forward to it for ages. We've had a rough few months and this is a very special family treat. Am now seriously worried about the pool!! Crossing fingers.

li33i · 12/04/2011 22:16

Hi again - wow, can't believe some of these comments! In my eyes, it was very clear that this bug was caught from the pool..my son does not go to nursery or play school and was 100% fine in all the days leading up to our holiday. It was pretty instantaneous after the pool visit, which makes it very hard to ignore. We ended up taking him to A&E it was so severe, it was not just a bit of a puke here and there, it was very bad and lasted a few days. :-(
He is ok now thankfully, and we are all still recovering too.
Some of the things I saw in the baby pool made me make a pretty hasty exit tbh, and overheard one mom say her son had pooed and needed to get another nappy.
I cannot believe there are moms out there that would take a still poorly child swimming?? Whats all that about??! We havent even left our house for over a week (yes boring I know!)so we can recuperate, and so hopefully no other child (or adult!) will succumb to this horrible bug. I won't go again to centerparcs..I guess I must be naieve to think the pools must be thoroughly cleaned at all times.
But then you end up never doing anything or going anywhere! Lol! I guess we will just try something else next time..

We definitely caught norovirus at whinfell CP 4.5 years ago. They had closed down the pic'n'mix etc to try to limit it so had tried their best HOWEVER there was no warning of an epidemic until we actually arrived there. Very poor considering we had a 3 month old baby to consider. DH was so ill he fainted etc (and he had to drive home as I cannot!). We didn't complain as assumed CP would deny all responsibilty - looks like we were right. Well you have learned your lesson - take your business elsewhere and tell all your friends.

ShatnersBassoon · 13/04/2011 13:38

So a child was being ill in the pool while you were in there?

ClancyCrew · 13/04/2011 13:41

you cant trace this infection tbh
pools are grimy
get over it

yout kid will have ZILLIONS of these

Butterbur · 13/04/2011 13:48

Even Norovirus, which has one of the shortest incubation periods, takes at least 24 hours before symptoms emerge, so, OP, if your DS was sick immediately after the pool visit, it was something else, or from somewhere else.
