My 6 month dd has cradle cap, not even yellow, just brown small bits on top of head - don't come off, can't pick off - tried that nasty dentinox?? is that what its called, can't remember and some oil. Neither works. Can't tell if she has dark brown hair or ginger!! Anyone got a magic cure?

I got salysilic acid ointment on prescription. Not sure if it is really bad for them as I was in that sleep deprived just follow whatever the dr said state. it worked very quickly.

Gently rub olive oil into his scalp before bed at night. In the morning it will be really soft and you can either pick it off with your fingers or rub it off with a rough facecloth. Just give his hair a quick wash in the morning. Don't worry about the oil staining bedclothes etc - it is absorbed into the skin really quickly and won't come off on you or the bedclothes.

If you haven't got olive oil, grapeseed oil or almond oil will do - I wouldn't use vegetable oil if I were you or he will smell like a chip!!

we are using vaseline. i rub it in her scalp in the morning and let it settle. (it makes all the flakes soft, and a lot of it comes off by itself!) and then shampoo her hair with dentinox in the evening. i am a little wary of taking her out tho in the cold with a head full of vaseline. but apparently vaseline 30mins before the shampoo works too. good luck!

The nitty gritty nit comb works wonders for combing out cradle cap.

NotQuiteCockney · 01/11/2005 09:38

I found avoiding putting hats on the baby helped reduce cradle cap.

zippitippitoes · 01/11/2005 10:02

alternatively it does disappear of it's own accord if you can wait

Stilltrue · 01/11/2005 10:36

T Gel shampoo by Neutrogena; the one for "dry irritated scalp". It has an ingredient that softens up the cradle cap deposits. then you just comb through. It may be salisylic acid in a very mild form. A friend who's a consultant dermatologist recommended it to me.

I just left it - -thought it made aprotective layer in the summer

Miaou · 01/11/2005 10:47

I left dd1's cradle cap when she had it - it built up and up and started to smell . She still had it at the age of 5 - so I'm trying to keep ds's at bay this time!

rummum · 01/11/2005 13:45

I was a hairdresser im my previous life, and apparently its because the hair isn't being brushed.. and the scales (for want of a better word) build up...
If you get a soft baby brush and brush the scalp every day this also stimulates the scalp and stops the build up. [sorted]

I've just been wondering about this too, ds is 16 months and still has it. I'm finding it difficult to get it off as he has a mop of hair!

Miaou · 01/11/2005 15:23

thanks for reminding me rummum, I must buy a baby brush

forevermore · 02/11/2005 08:36

dd got this at 4 weeks, tried every oil in the book, shampoo, soaking in oil b4 shampoo you name it...finally a consultant friend of mine recommended aveeno cream (on prescription if you beg) in the scalp once every day and washing with capsagel (wrong spelling) shampoo...like dentinox but frgance free (only aviablable on prescription).

This finally got rid of it in 3 days! Now i maintain with avenoo in scalp twice a week and washing with the shampoo once a week.

not come back so far and scalp is healthy and so is dd's mop of hair.

mabel1973 · 02/11/2005 09:41

Dentinox did work for my DS, but also used a 'little me' balm in a pot (from Boots) that was good. just rub it in leave over night then either pick out the bits or use a comb very gently. It did eventually just disappear of it's own accord though

scrub head well with tips of fingers when washing hair, loosens it nicely and babies love the rub down.

Bagpuss30 · 02/11/2005 10:41

ds2 had this recently and we bought some cradle cap massage oil from Waitrose (their own brand). I masaged it in and then left whilst I was running the bath then brushed with a soft baby brush to loosen the flakes before finally shampooing out. Repeated for three days in a row and it was gone. Hasn't been back since which is a shame as the oil does smell particularly lovely .

infaderm conditioning shampoo has been formulated by experts in dermatology to be kind to dry skin and exzema. an emolient based cleaner and conditioner with added chamomile. its hypoallergenic soap free and contains no added fragrances or colourings.

this can be purchased from the boots baby section...results in a couple of days....it also helps if you comb your childs hair while in the bath. also massage in olive oil plus comb before washing hair. this is what i done wiht my boy and its never returned since using so i only occasionally use the shampoo...just for prevention reasons.

Surfermum · 02/11/2005 11:08

I'm with Flamesparrow on this one! I tried brushing, Dentinox and olive oil followed by brushing. None of them seemed to make any difference. What made a difference was putting in olive oil overnight and combing with a nit comb. DD was only a few weeks old but didn't seem t mind one bit.

bubblepop · 02/11/2005 11:15

all of mine had this. try rubbing a little baby oil on the scalp and leave overnight, wash off the next day.it softens the scabs enough for you to pick them off gently but it does take a few goes and a week or two to get rid of it all. use a flannel on baby's head in the bath to gently exfoliate the skin. dentinox works to keep it at bay once you've got rid of most of it.washing the hair at every bathtime helps to stop it building up again, followed by a gentle rub on the head with a towl, use a baby brush everyday on the scalp

notasheep · 02/11/2005 12:22

mum at school has suggested almond oil gently rubbed in

Gomez · 02/11/2005 12:26

Send to Grans for first night away at around 10 months I think. Pick up next morning at 9.30am to discover scaly head gone! Didn't bother me so I just left it - obviously bugged the hell out of MIL who couldn't wait to attack it. Think she used vaseline and a comb and it would appear about 4 hours of her life!

missd · 02/11/2005 12:55

I'm an independent distributor for a company called Forever Living Products, we do a range of Aloe Vera based products and we have a soap which is excellent in the fight agaianst cradle cap. If it's used in conjunction with our Aloe Gel, not only does it clear the cradle cap but also heals the skin underneath to prevent it returning.
These products can be used for many other things so you wont be left with wasted products once the cradle cap has disappeared

i was told olive oil, or even sunflower oil are good, i generally used baby oil just before dd's bath and then wash it off with the shampoo, worked wonders!!!!!!!!!!
