random bruising, I have got the fear

I am absolutely crapping it and wondered if anyone else had any experience of this.

A couple of days ago DH noticed some bruises to my thigh. There were lots - about 8 and all were quite small as though someone had dug their fingers into me very very hard (which they haven't). I racked my brains but couldn't think how they got there. Today I have more bruising in my inner thigh on my other leg. As it's my inner thigh it's even less likely that I have banged without realising.

I was tired last week, so have put two and two together and made five.

I went to the Doctor this morning and she sent me for blood tests which I should get back early next week but until then I just feel sick with worry. She was reassuring and told me she didn't think it was the thing I was fearing but of course they must rule it out.

I have a tendancy to worry about things like this but since having DCs (4 & 5) had managed to get a grip but today I feel absolutely petrified and can't even speak to anyone today.

Has anyone else had unexplained bruising that was explained away but something fairly innocuous?

yes - I can't even remember the name of it though.
Utterly harmless condition affecting capillaries - an auto-immune condition.

I had it on and off f a few years then it stopped.

LostInTheBlackHole · 15/03/2011 16:13

I get random bruising when i am low in iron. I am also know to give myuself very interesting bruises in my sleep. I often have bruises i can account for. Normally when investigated it is something stupid like ds having been stood on my lap - little toes can dig in like no bodies business, or the fact that i was busy doing something else. I also bruise very easily generally but this can be worse when i take some common meds so the slightest indendent or bump causes bruising. I tend to write it off as something that give me leverage in a who has the most bruises competition with ds. The only thing that makes being clumbsy a benefit and a competition i dont mind losing.

  • cant account for
winnybella · 15/03/2011 16:20

Aenemia possibly. Quite common.

SlightlyJaded · 15/03/2011 19:30

Thank you so much for your reassuring suggestions. I don't quite why I feel so frightened when clearly there are other possible explanations.

Any other thoughts much appreciated and thank you again. I shall sleep a little better now.

You're last comment made me think. I bruise the worst when i am suffering from the effects of sleep deprivation.

ConnorTraceptive · 15/03/2011 20:13

Could be lots of things. A few years ago I had a bit of an itchy thigh so was scratching it a bit the next my whole thigh was one big bruise. The doctor was concerned that maybe I'd been hurt by someone but didn't want to say. Had blood done and it came to nothing.

I understand your panic I have a swollen lymph node and am waiting on some blood results I have googled and quite frankly terrified myself!

also vit K deficiency can cause that

Elibean · 15/03/2011 20:25

A school friend of mine had it, years ago - it was a platelet problem, easily sorted. Nothing sinister.

Waiting for test results is always hard, and health anxiety has a nasty habit of flooding back when it gets a chance - I sympathise!

CPtart · 15/03/2011 21:13

In my experience as a nurse, if the blood tests show up anything really serious needing urgent treatment then the lab should inform your GP straightaway, so if you haven't heard after a day or two it suggests you needn't worry too much.

whomovedmychocolate · 15/03/2011 21:26

I get a lot of small bruises when I am anaemic - low iron levels also stop me sleeping and instead I wander around with poor coordination, bashing into things and not noticing. A bit chicken and egg really OP but you get my drift :)

SlightlyJaded · 15/03/2011 21:51

Thank you. You are all lovely and so understanding. I used to be a complete hypercondriac worrier about sinister diseases but oddly the minute I got pregnant it stopped. For some reason, I can feel myself spiralling into panic mode again tonight.

You are right Elibean, waiting is the worst!

my hairdressers daughter had shocking bruises on her arms, they all thought the worst, and only found out fairly recently was a minor condition,Id always thought she had the worst thing, and every bruise I find its the first thing I think of!! hyperchondriac.

WhipMeIndiana · 15/03/2011 21:56

hmmm didnt explain that too well Grin it was back in the 1980s she had the bruises
then we moved house...
only recently moved back so caught up with her.

SlightlyJaded · 16/03/2011 10:19

So I stupidly mentioned it to a nurse friend today and she looked a bit alarmed. She said all the right things like don't worry etc but I am now at that point where I see the grim reaper at every turn.

Am I the only one who feels very {envy} when posters mention that their DH or DP is a doctor/surgeon/GP. How lovely and reassuring to have someone 'on call' when ever you needed.

Connor I meant to say good luck with your tests. I used to get swollen lymph nodes and obsessed worried about these too. I had a couple of blood tests years ago which came to nothing and eventually it stopped. I do still get a swollen node before a period sometimes or if i am run down or tired.

i had something similar a few years ago and it was just a virus without a name - there are so many variations that sometimes there is no name but the doc said it was like the equivalent of glandular fever. I got it because I had been working too hard and it was my bodies way of telling me i needed to slow down. It had something to do with c-reactive protein levels Confused

I did look like i had gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson though as big swollen bruises popped up all over my body Hmm

ConnorTraceptive · 16/03/2011 14:27

try not to worry to much about your nurse friends alarm (says she who keeps thinking must tidy up the wardrobes incase i should suddenly drop off this mortal coil suddenly and MIL comes to stay!)

Seeing doctor on friday so will hold off on spring clean until then!

SlightlyJaded · 16/03/2011 20:34

Thanks Connor. Will be thinking of you Friday.

And I absolutey don't think you need to spring clean :o

Petty thank you. That is exactly the kind of story I need to hear. I have just looked at my arm where they drew blood and I look like a Heroin addict. Not once did I bruise in all the times that the nurse took blood in my pregnancies but I seem to be bruising like a peach at the moment.

Oh fuckity fuck I need to stop thinking about it.

Trust me IME if those bloods were to come back with signs of what you are thinking they would have called you within hours.
DH had a test wednesday morning and they call us up at 10pm that same night and given dx the next morning!

I have times when i bruise very easily, or just where i bang myself alot and forget.

Pixie so I took your advice and psyched myself up all day to phone the doctors. I called at about 3.45 and got a voicemail saying 'the results line is open between 9:30 and 3:30 Monday to Friday'

So another two days of waiting...

Thanks so much everyone for the reassurances about them getting back faster if it was serious. Lisad - sorry to hear your DH had to go through that. Hope he's ok now.

Connor hope all went well at doctor's today.

Will stop by later if I have another panic and will report back when I get the results.

OP posts:
Elibean · 18/03/2011 17:15

I'm betting either anaemia or a platelet thingy Smile

They would have phoned you by now if they thought you were seriously worrying, SJ, Lisad is right. But still horrid to have to wait longer - hope you get to enjoy your weekend anyway!

SlightlyJaded · 18/03/2011 20:45

God I love mumsnet :o

You really make me feel better.
