Hi just thought Id ask you nice mumnetters for any advice.

Ive recently being suffering with fatigue, I've put on weight (cant loose it).Ive got low mood, get irrratable easily, & just want to be a Veggie all day, just got no energy to nothing. Everything seems an effort. Oh yea- Low Sex Drive too.

This is unusual for me as Im always on the go-cant sit down, bursting with energy etc.

I was reading a magazine last night & it had something in it regarding Underactive thyroid, & my symptoms fit.

Im not depressed, although Im on AD's, have been to few years. Im on my first week of weeening off them.

This has been going on for quite a few weeks now.
Do you think I should see my GP & ask for a blood test, or do you think Im overeacting.

Any advice would be grateful

Yes, your symptoms fit - go and ask for a blood test, because it sounds ever so much like underactive thyroid to me. Get him to check your blood sugar and for anaemia as well.

suzywong · 20/10/2005 14:59

Yes yes yes
go and ask for your thyroid function to be tested and don't take no for an answer,

Thyroid replacement therapy is very simple, just daily tablets, and it will make you feel human again.

Call the Gp as soon as you can

spookyserenity · 20/10/2005 15:01

There are loads of us on here with underactive thyroids.

I would go to your GP and ask for a blood test tbh. it can't do any harm and if it is the cause you will feel so much better once you are being treated. Just don't expect the weight to suddenly fall off ! For what it's worth your symptoms sound exactly the same as mine were.

spookyserenity · 20/10/2005 15:01

See! and they all type faster than me!

spookylips · 20/10/2005 15:04

ive also got all the signs of having underactive thyroid, had 2 blood test for under and overactive since had baba 12 months ago, but ive havent got it but i am abit depressed and have been for many years (which i am starting counselling soon)

BUT the best bet is to go to teh docs and to find out where you stand once you have the results or not

MusicLover · 20/10/2005 15:05

Thankyou all-I knew I could count on some good advice. At least I know Im not overeacting now.

To tell you the truth, it never occured to me until I read the Mag, then I started to get worried.

I will ring Gp & make appnt, do i tell them what i think or should I just tell them how Im feeling, & let them decide. I dont want them thinking Im doing their job.

Its just I was reading a site today about it, & it said that it doesnt always show up if you do have an underactive thyroid, so made me worry more.

tell them how you are feeling and that you need/want/must have a thyroid funtcion, anaemia, as WWB says, test, andy you must have it ASAP

I went undiagnosed for three and a half years, and had two kids in that time and I spit that no one picked it up. Go, go, go run like the wind and make an appointment with your GP

MusicLover · 20/10/2005 15:10

I will do- thankyou again. Is there anything that causes it? Or is it just one of them things?

Im usually a size 10, but gone up to a 12 & bursting out of them. Ive always been up & down with my weight & can usually control it with what i eat (not dieting) but my weight just seems to be going up & up. Im 5 ft & 10 stone (32 yo)

it usually runs in your family, ask your mum if any of her female relatives had thryoid problems

PG tipped me over the edge, I'm not sure what else causes it.

Do you feel mentally diminshed as well, and do you feel that even if you could sleep for 10 hours a night you still wouldn't feel refreshed?

and does your hair come a lot when you wash it?

spookyserenity · 20/10/2005 15:12

I think the problem can be in reading the results.

I can never remember the correct terms so bear with me, but basically there are two different figures they have to get. One is the amount of whatever it is that the thyroid produces, the other is the substance that your piturary gland produces to make your thyroid work, does that make sense. Your thyroid level can seem to be good, but when you look at the other you can see that your pituary gland is having to work its socks off to do it. As far as I understand you can still get symptoms with this type of result, and it's definitely not a good long term thing for your body to work like this. If your pituary gland packs up it's a lot harder to treat.

spookyserenity · 20/10/2005 15:14

To answer your other question - my mum has it (but is still a size 10 ) and mine was set off when I was pg with DS2.

suzywong · 20/10/2005 15:14

but then not all of the symptoms are always present, for instance I didn't have any problems with my weight, except for baby jelly belly

but dont be afraid to TELL your gp what you want, I have been told that doctors really like diagnosing underactive thyroid as it is so easily cleared up

suzywong · 20/10/2005 15:15

Hi serenity

(serenity helped me out a great deal and was very reassuring when I was first diagnosed)

spookyserenity · 20/10/2005 15:17

Hi Suzywong

MusicLover · 20/10/2005 15:26

Suzy- yes I do feel that if I slept for 10 hrs I still wouldnt feel refreshed.Im not going to bed particularly late, but I get up about 7.45 & feel constantly tired all day long, just yawning alot too.
Im usually an "on the ball" person, even though I have bad concentration. But lately Im struggling with the simply things like adding up etc.

I kept putting it down to my AF being dew, but thats has come & gone & still feel the same.

Thanks Serenity for advise & Suzy too. You've made my mind up for me.

suzy - so how did you managed to find out in the end about you went undiagnosed for 3 yrs?

suzywong · 20/10/2005 23:57

I went to a private doctor to get my medical for my Australian Visa, and he could tell just by looking at me, he said I had a slight goitre ( enlargement of the 'roid at the base of the neck) and eye drag.

NHS doctor stalled me and wouldn't prescribe thyroxene despite 2 blood tests and put me on NHS specialist waiting list - 3-6 months for an endocrinologist - and I was leaving the country in 2. In the end I stalked the specialist on the interweb and found out his secretary was from Perth and then phoned her directly and pulled the old Aussie connection and got an appointment. Endocrinologist was furious and said it was clear I had a "barn door" case of underactive and wrote terse letter to GP about it.

since you ask

she's been diagnosed with underactive and is under six stone??

spookyserenity · 21/10/2005 13:37

It happens, but I don't know why to be honest. My mum is like that, she is very thin - 5'7 and weighs just over 8 stone. Her only real symptom was fatique, it was a running joke in my family for years that no matter where she was, my mum would fall asleep at 9pm.

Jasnem · 21/10/2005 14:08

She's 5'5", and no, she isn't anorexic, just very unwell!

Dropinthe · 21/10/2005 18:07

You have all the symptons that I had with underactive thyroid-has taken about 4 months of experimenting with doses of Thyroxine to get the levels back to normal but I think I have had it for over 5 years so my body has got some catching up to do!

Go to the quacks and get it sorted but don't expect over night cures!

Always around to chat to!

(But not know as screaming kids and DH!!

You've made me think, now: I have been very very 'low' for years, but just thought that was me, but I am very tired all the time, I want to sleep when I'm driving (I get to school early so I can park up and doze!) yet I get 7 hours or so a night. I am getting scarily forgetful minute by minute, and I dont want to tell anyone because I'm so embarassed, and my hair falls out in handfuls if I brush or wash it. On the other hand I don't have dry skin, my weight is pretty stable and I'm not always cold, infact my temp fluctuates a lot. I was worrying that I was perimenopausal (I'm 44) but my periods are spot on. My sister has Hashimoto's disease, and takes thyroxine daily. My brother is diabetic, which I believe is genetically linked. I also get recurrent mouth ulcers or sore patches in the mouth when I am feeling run down. I just don't want to go along and get dismissed as a hypochondriac. What does MN think?
