DS's poos - sorry!

Ds is 22 months and his poos have nearly always been sloppy. There have been days when they've been like normal poos but it never lasts. They are usually very sloppy and smelly.

Is this ok or should we be concerned? We're trying to potty train and it's impossible as we never know when he is doing a poo, it must just slop out with no effort on his part!

I know it's a pooey subject, but can someone advise?

Have you tried playing with his diet?
For example going gluten free? or alternatively dairy free? Sometimes some people have trouble digesting both.
Lottie has been constipated her entire life, then she was sick with terrible nappies one night. The nasty nappies stayed so i cut gluten out, 2.5 weeks later she's fine, back to normal, i'll carry on with gluten free for a month in total then put her back on gluten and see what happens then.

Thanks Thombat!
Ok, can you give me a list of food with gluten in then please? I'll try that.

PMSL, no I bloody can't, it's a living nightmare!!!!!!!!!!

PMSL, sorry!

Right - no bread, no biscuits, no nuggets, chips, etc etc.
Gluten is basically found in wheat flour and wheat flour appears everywhere!

I bought lottie gliuten free bread (Tesco / health food shops - £2.39 a loaf!)
Sainsburys do gluten free fish fingers, sausages, chicken nuggets.
Smiley faces and alphabites are ok, oven chips not as the ones i used were coated in wheat flour.
Even smarties have wheat flour in them!
Yu can buy wheat free past, biscuits, fuit loaves etc.
If he does have an alergy to wheat you can have him tested properly at the GP's and then get your gluten free food on prescription.
I didn't do this as I wanted to see for myself first if it made a difference to her nappies and it did. will now see what happens when i switch back.
it'll take at least a couple of weeks to make a difference to his system.
Happy to go though snack / food ideas, gluten free if it'll help.
Alos there are a plthora of websites on gluten free stuff.

DS1 was like that Rhubarb, at least, we never knew when he had to go & I couldn't get the idea (in the cloth nappy world) that poo should just "peel off" of fleece liners (sorry, if tmi!).

Having had a constipated child who won't drink enough fluids, but at least it was bloomin' obvious what her bottom is up to, I'd go for the sloppy-bottom one instead, any time.

We just did toilet training mostly when he was older & more self-aware (22 months is mighty young, methinks).

RottenRhubarb · 17/10/2005 19:55

Thombat!
What's the French word for gluten? If I say it as it is they'll think I'm just calling him greedy!

22 months probably is a little young, but we just wanted him to get the idea, i.e. putting him on the potty when we see him doing a poo.

His poos are very sloppy and very smelly, I have a vague notion that this shouldn't be so at his age. Don't think I can face a wheat-free diet though, especially not in the land of Baguettes!!!!

'poo'tty training at 22 mnths? wow!

RottenRhubarb · 17/10/2005 20:26

Well, my children are very advanced you know! Seeing as he can read and write now, we thought it about time he controlled his bowel movements.

I got an email from Luke - nah nah!

gingernut · 17/10/2005 20:29

Well, it's of no help to you I'm sure but ds1's are like this, always have been (know what freakyzebra means about the poo peeling off fleece liners - ha ha!). We didn't potty train till he was 3 and still had lots of problems with poos as he just slipped them out with no warning so we just had to wait till he could get to the loo in time.

Having said that, you could goggle toddler diarrhoea because it could be that and there are dietary measures you can take to improve things if it is.

dabihp · 17/10/2005 20:30

ofcourse he can read and write at 22 months!

(although my dd knew how to counta and alphabet by 18mnths, so nah na nah na na)

so, what did u tell him...

"Hi i am a crazed fan who is fantasing about you?"

RottenRhubarb · 17/10/2005 20:35

Thanks gingerbear, will google.

Dabihp, I figured the "will you shag me?" email didn't work, so I wrote a nicer one asking for money for all the promotional work I had done for them. I got a very nicely worded 'no' in reply! But at least he's noticed me!!!!!!

Busy now writing another!
