I have just come home after 3 days in hospital with excrutiating stomach pain, a laparoscopy and have been diagnosed with 'ovulation pain'

WEnt in to A&E on Saturady absolutely doubled over in pain

They gave me a laparoscopy (yesterday, so 2 days spent climbing the walls on morphine) as have had a ovarian cyst which burst in the past, so thought it was that. Scanned me and saw a 3cm cyst so thought it may be bleeding so went in with the camera.

Said it wasn't enough to take out, so left the cyst there, said 'you just have ovulation pain, perhaps you should consider going on the pill'.

Sent me home with co-drydamol and Diclofenac. Am sat here in as much pain ads I was on Saturday completely bemused. Ovulation pain? I have never had period/ovulation pain in my life. They have signed me off for a week (due to op more than anything else) and I can barely walk.

Really upset as have not slept for 3 nights and don't know what to do. I think the hospital thought I was a neurotic.

Has anyone else experience anything like this?

Yes, sort of. Since I have been getting (ahem) older, I have had (on occasion) absolutely EXCRUTIATING abdominal pain around about ovulation time. I took myself off to see an ob/gyn last summer to get checked out as by then I was convinced I had something terribly sinister going on in there. I was scanned etc, and given the all clear and, like you, told to just deal with it.

(In the nicest possible way).

I have had small but very tender ovarian cysts in the past, but they have all cleared up, but the ovulation pain has left my entire abdomen feeling as though it has been through the mangle.

Since then (the summer), it has been fine. I have absolutely NOTHING to suggest I'm afraid, but wanted to tel you that I have been through the same too.

(Was concerned it might be peri-menopausal related, but apparently not.......)

Rest up and I hope you feel better soon.

orangina · 08/02/2011 17:20

excrutiating? excruciating? Blush

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/02/2011 17:45

Thanks Orangina.

I have never experience pain like it - childbirth was pain free in comparison.

I have never known anyone being admitted for ovulation pain - however there were 3 women on the gynae ward this weekend with the same symptoms and diagnosis as me.

Can't go on the pill as TTC.

Jys feeling a bit sorry for myself (and keep being sick as well, prob. from all the morphine)

BooBooGlass · 08/02/2011 17:47

Hmm, the fact that there were 3 other women there all with the same diagnosis makes me think whoever is in charge has no idea whatis wrong and was trying to fob you off. That kind of pain isn't normal

Fimbo · 08/02/2011 17:47

Poor you GOML, hope the pain settles down for you soon.

falsemessageoflethargy · 08/02/2011 17:51

Did you have a section before GOML? I get that sort of pain sometimes around ovulation due to scar tissue around the whole area - could this be the case with you?

TheFoosa · 08/02/2011 17:53

I have had ovulation pain since my 20's, it really is very painful and has become more so as I've got older

have been examined, scanned, the lot and everything comes back clear

not sure it starts suddenly though but don't take my word for it

expatinscotland · 08/02/2011 17:55

I think I'd ask your GP for a gynae referral because if 3 other women were on the ward diagnosed similar, I'd be inclined to think someone's asleep at the fucking wheel and just can't be arsed so says shite like, 'ovarian pain, go on the Pill' rather than do their job and get to the root of the problem.

noddyholder · 08/02/2011 17:55

I have had this too and have been admitted twice Scans cameras etc showed nothing. The first time was absolutely unbearable i lay down in the waiting room and didn't care about the other patients ot=r anything.I was treated with strong anti biotics but that was over 2 yrs ago and it recurs a lot Sad

Mumsnut · 08/02/2011 18:02

I have awful ovulation pain too - leaves me doubled over for a whole day.

GOML - didn't you have a 'maybe pregnant?' thread recently? If you've never had this sort of pain before, is there any chance you might have an ectopic pregnancy developing??

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/02/2011 18:26

I just feel like such a tool.

I had a debate with an nurse at 5 o clock this morning - she had given me tramadol (whatever that shit is, it doesn't work) and I asked/begged her for the paracetemol/codeine/diclofenac combo which had worked earlier on that afternoon, so I could get some sleep.

She said 'are you sure you are in pain, I don't think so, that tramadol should have worked' and asked me where the pain was. I lifted up my pyjamas and showed her. AS if she wass able to fucking see anything, the light wasn't even on. Angry

I do feel rather fobbed off to be honest - I am normally very articulate but couldn't argue with medical opinion - for one I was sat there in agony.

It was all a mess really. I went in to hospital at 3.30, on A&E for a couple of hours, they said nil by mouth until the next morning when I could have a scan (in case of surgery), had a scan at 11.30 the next day. It was only then that I had a drink (had a banging head becasue of dehydration, they didn't put a drip in until just beforet he scan, at 11).

Pissed off. I can't bloody have this every month.

orangeflutie · 08/02/2011 18:29

You poor thing, sounds awful:(

I agree with expatinscotland. It's probably a good idea to get a gynae referral and have it looked at again.

It doesn't seem right you should be in so much pain.

pigsinmud · 08/02/2011 18:34

Blimey that sounds awful. I don't get ovulation pain, but on day 3 of my period, every month, I get excruciating pain and I feel as if i'm going to faint. Last month I was in the middle of the field when it came on with the dog and 3 of my children. I thought I wasn't going to make it home. The youngest was panicking!! It's like full on contraction pains without a break. Really awful.

Sounds a bad experience. Can't believe they left you nil by mouth and without a drip for so long.

blinks · 08/02/2011 18:40

i had the same thing recently but i already have a diagnosis of endometriosis. spent 3 days after self presenting at A&E in sobbing mess.

they think the endo has maybe spread to my digestive system as the pain was higher than usual, constant and worse after eating. i got given a big wada painkillers too and the pain faded over the next week but i still have odd pain/tenderness on and off so am awaiting gynae referral to discuss poss surgery.

i've also had 2 laparoscopies in the past and they can be feckin sore and fuck.

usually it's trapped air causing the worse pain...

where was the pain pre-lap?

blinks · 08/02/2011 18:42

my spelling/grammer is shit as have a child literally hanging off my effing arm.

OP posts:
blinks · 08/02/2011 18:58

it's a mystery, the world of random abdo pain...

could be endo but normally they'd see something with a laparoscopy.

child has found ice cream so functionality has returned to limbs.

expatinscotland · 08/02/2011 18:58

'She said 'are you sure you are in pain, I don't think so, that tramadol should have worked' '

How unprofessional of her. I'd report her.

Not all pain meds/combinations work the same on all people, that is a known fact. To tell you that you're lying is beyond the pale. Angry

I once had a surgery where the drug they gave to wake me back up worked too well.

I asked for sleeping tablets at 2AM, the nurse told me no.

So I got my clothes on, packed up, went to the desk. Said, 'What do I need to sign, because I'm leaving right now to go home and take my sleeping pills I forgot pack. I should have known with you people.'

She got off her lazy arse which was sat in the chair and rang the doc who prescribed me the one fucking tablet I needed.

Angry

I took my own pain meds to hospital whilst having DS. Rang twice, as was, understanably after a 3rd birth, in agony with afterbirth pains. No one came.

So I got my own shit out. Midwife happened in and went spare.

Told her to learn to be professional by a) not shouting at patients, they are not school children b) do her job as I'd rung twice and then maybe we wouldn't have these problems.

She left and the nedette/chavette in the next bed started laughing and said, 'Remind me not to fuck with you.'

I'd go private if I were you. I find a lot of NHS types can't be arsed to find out root causes because it means too much effort for htem (and cost).

End rant.

falsemessageoflethargy · 08/02/2011 18:58

Agree with the trapped air - can you feel a bump where your ovaries are on either side?

frankie3 · 08/02/2011 18:59

I had exactly the same thing and it was due to endometriosis and being pregnant. I was about 2 weeks pregant and didn't know and went to the doctors with the same terrible pain. The dr did a blook test and told me I was pregant and sent me to the hospital for a laparoscopy to check for ectopic pregnancy. They did not find an ectopic, and were not sure that I was even pregnant as it did not show up on a scan and they said that the pregnancy test results could be inaccurate as I could have had a miscarriage I did not know about!

I had an agonising wait for the next 4 weeks, and then a scan showed that I was pregnant. The pains were caused by the endometriosis. The pain only lasted for a few weeks - not the whole pregancy!

Hope you find out what is going on.

Fetlock · 08/02/2011 18:59

i had this off and on all my reproductive life. i remember when i was at school early teens being rushed by parents to hospital as they thought i had apendix problems, they xray'd met etc and found nothing. when i was older i realised it had been ov' pain. sometimes it would last all day, sometimes just an hour or less. took me years to work out what it was and alot of women don't get it. i don't get it now as too old, i miss it actually.....

GetOrfMoiLand · 08/02/2011 19:04

Good on you expat. Actually, when the nurse went I sat there, crying and feeling a wimp, and was tempted to pull my canulas out, pack my bags and walk home.

But was just too knackered and in pain.

I got DP to bring me in anadin extras as had a thumping headache which the morphine wasn't helping, and they wouldn't give me paracetamol.

I told the doctor this morning about the vile nurse, asked to see my notes to ensure that 'hysteric' wasn't written all over them re me, doctor got all defensive, and like the twat I am I just sat there and cried again. At that point I just wanted to fucking go home.

I am sat here crying now thinking about it - I am by no means a pushover in life, normally can stand up for myself, but I felt so fucking useless and I still feel so bloody ill. I am never having morphine again, it makes me so sick for days.

I think I will put in a complaint - some of the nurses were fabiulous and were really helpful, but that pernicious bitch - what kind of woman argues with a crying patient at 5 in the morning.

Am gpoing to ring the Nuffield hospital in the morning - thank fuck I have the funds.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 08/02/2011 19:09

This is why you have a time period in which to complain, GOML, because you often can't in the heat of the moment.

But she is unprofessional and unethical, too, and so deserves complaint.

So does the doc who got huffy. I'd report him, too.

You have every right to see your notes.

blinks · 08/02/2011 19:09

the last time i was in, i was examined by doc at A&E before being transferred to a ward and the first doctor forgot to write that i'd noticed some blood in my poo (oh the glamour), so when i was examined again and no mention of it was made, i reiterated it.

the doctor then made a massive deal about getting a rectal examination done and huffed ad puffed like i had just thought of mentioning it now... was on fucking morphine at this point and out of my tits so unable to defend myself... one bitch of a nurse then loudly bitched about it outside my room when doing the shift hand over.

i too can stand up for myself but when you're in pain and/or on bloody narcotics, you're mega vulnerable.

everyone else was lovely but it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, eh.

RMCW · 08/02/2011 19:23

Hi GOML

Sorry you have been in the wars.

I have had this type of pain since my teens.

I had brief respites during my pregnancies but as I am getting older (38) its gettig worse again Sad

I take co codamol and ibuprofen. And lie down. Nothing else you can do really when the pain is like that.

I have also been scanned to within an inch of my life too and have been NHS and Private and found no difference in either tbh.

IME if there is no acute problem i.e. cysts, tumors, bleeding etc then you are lablled as having a chronic problem, given pain killers (which half the time dont help that much) and get sent home.

Living with chronic conditions can be debilitating....hope you get some better help soon x
