I am a fool for leaving it till now to go for a smear test, I know this.
I am booked in for a colposcopy on Tuesday and am really scared.
I know that most people with this will be fine, but I also know that most of those that are not are the idiots like me who left a decade between smears.
I was just wondering if anyone felt like sharing their experiences with me. Also if anyone knows how long it takes to get the results of the colposcopy?

Yes, had loop diathermy done - basically, it's a heated loop of wire which cuts out the abnormal area on the cervix, so that the abnormality can then be sent away to be checked under a microscope, to confirm the degree of abnormality and that all the abnormal cells have been removed successfully. The treated area is then cauterized (basically, burnt) to stop it bleeding. Over the next few weeks, as the area heals, you may get bits of the burnt, cauterized bit coming away,a bit like a scab, which may cause some slightly odd discharge. Any discharge which smells bad is wrong and should be checked out, as should excessive bleeding (although a small amount of bleeding for a while afterwards is not abnormal). In six months, you should have another colposcopy so that they can visualise the cervix again and check it's healed properly.

Hi emma
Not sure if you saw this link that I posted on the other thread. It's information about colposcopy, treatment and the after effects - the website is the colposcopists' association.

Hopre you're feeling ok.

emmaplus3 · 04/03/2011 10:09

thankyou rabbit for explaining it to me i could not bear to look but like to know whats been done and thans bela for the link

emmaplus3 · 04/03/2011 16:42

is it normal for your belly to swell i look 6 months pregnent over night no pain or bleeding just feels tender

rabbitstew · 04/03/2011 19:51

My belly didn't swell at all.

BelaLugosiinStripes · 04/03/2011 21:57

Neither did mine (have also been on the receiving end). Did they give you an aftercare leaflet? This should have a contact number to ring re any changes/symptoms afterward - might be worth trying this.

emmaplus3 · 05/03/2011 09:15

hi yes they did i found out that they put gas in to see better while they were doing the coploscapy

BelaLugosiinStripes · 05/03/2011 17:13

Hi Emma
Hope you're feeling better today. Re the gas - did you have a laparoscopy as well then?

emmaplus3 · 05/03/2011 19:38

usedtobeyoung · 05/03/2011 20:15

HI used yes i feel better now i started bleeding

usedtobeyoung · 07/03/2011 18:22

That's good Emma.
Well I called the colposcopy clinic today as it's been 4 weeks and I was fed up of waiting.
They had my results but it all seems very strange, apparently they did not find any abnormal cells from the biopsy, just inflammation. Thought this sounded great until she said that the dr had reviewed my smear and was sure that the cells were severe Confused
I have to go for a second colposcopy on the 28th.
Slightly peeved that I have to go through the whole process again, but obviously it still could of been worse so I'm grateful for that.
Bela, if you happen to read this does this make sense to you? Or anyone else of course.

Used, I had a sees of colposcopies as they kept alternating between negative and severe. I think it depends on where they take the biopsy from..I eventually ended up with a gynae oncologist consultant who identified the area which was causing the problems and had lletz treatment. However this all took about 10 months ! Luckily it was all taken out and regular annual smears take care of me.....

Persevre with the spots and good luck

usedtobeyoung · 07/03/2011 20:53

Thebonkers, thanks, that is really helpful to hear. I am finding it hard to decide if it was good news, bad news or no news at all.
I did ask the nurse I spoke to if it was just that they had taken the biopsy from the wrong bit but she just said to wait and speak to the dr at my appointment.
Your story is encouraging, so thanks again.

BelaLugosiinStripes · 07/03/2011 21:40

Hi usedtobeyoung
Yes it does make sense to me. thebonkers is right, if they've taken small biopsies then sometimes they don't "hit" the right bit. This may be what happened in your case but obviously I can't say it definitely is.
If there is a mismatch between the smear test and the biopsy then the colposcopy person will have asked a cytology consultant to review your cytology sample (your smear test) to have another look at the cells as if the biopsy doesn't give the result that was anticipated.
As the review has agreed with the first report, then that's why they're asking you to go back for another investigation.
I guess it does sound odd but hopefully that explains things a bit better - but the person you see at colposcopy should be able to explain what has happened in your particular case, as obviously I'm talking in general terms here.

Hope your second appt goes ok. :)

usedtobeyoung · 07/03/2011 22:16

Thanks a lot Bela, it's reassuring to know that it is one of those things that happens. It does not seem odd now after hearing from you and thebonkers and actually I am not so worried now as at least some of my cervix must be ok (my very unscientific way of making myself feel better).
They also said if I need lletz they will do it then and my mum is coming to stay with us that week, so good timing too.

so i had my loop a while ago now i have not had a period ever since this cant be normal hav they done damage doing the loop and i dont go back to the hospital untill september. I have done loads of preg test and they are all neg so what can be wrong.

rabbitstew · 12/04/2011 17:44

I would go to the GP and tell them. Have you had period pains, etc, as though you should be getting a period? I know it's possible for treatment to cause problems like this, so that the blood can no longer leak out when your period is due (it's called cervical stenosis), but it is a fairly rare complication, so worth going to find out if it's this or something else, rather than waiting until September.

emmaplus3 · 12/04/2011 18:32

yes i have period pain at he mo so if i have this i can't have kids

rabbitstew · 12/04/2011 18:56

No, it doesn't mean you can't have kids, it means you need to be treated for it to fix the problem first.
