Have had it for nearly a month now and 2 courses of antibiotics hasn't really cleared it up.

I still have some pain, but omg the smell of the crap coming out from my nose (and which I can also taste, as it's going into the back of my throat. ) is seriously the most disgusting thing I have ever smelt.

This isn't good, is it? Back to docs, yes?

Hassled · 24/01/2011 22:32

Yes. That's certainly not good at all.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 24/01/2011 22:34

Yep. Back to the docs.

And pronto.

Valpollicella · 24/01/2011 22:35

I was kind of hoping that it meant it was just coming out, as it were, but I don't think that's it :(

Ugh at infected head

Bombay mix?

rowingboat · 24/01/2011 22:38

Hi there,
apart from the smell, do you have any of the other symptoms of sinusitis?
I had it for ages last year and felt like my head was exploding. However, when the yucky stuff cleared it did taste/smell disgusting, even though the infection seemed to be going or gone. I think the infected mucous will have to drain away and it will be horrible until it is gone.
I was given a steroid spray: nasonex, to help clear the build up and told to drink a lot.
I also took an expectorant cough medicine to help thin the mucous and clear out the infected stuff.
It would probably be worth another visit to see what the GP recommends. Take care of yourself and get lots of rest too, it's horrible having sinusitis, hope you feel better soon.

Valpollicella · 24/01/2011 22:42

Rowing that's it exactly. The pain was horrendous until about a week and a half ago (but I didn't have the gunk that I do atm).

I am still getting some pain, throbbing etc but nowhere near as bad as 2/3 weeks ago

I seemed to have switched one set of symptoms for another!

Shall go back to docs I think! And good to know about the spray

My main worry is that people can smell it on my breath or something Blush So embarrassed!

ItsAllaBitDeathlyQuiet · 24/01/2011 22:43

I've had it, I spent ages looking for whatever had died and rotted until I realised it was literally in my head.

Antibiotics cleared it eventually. It is grim, my sympathies.

ItsAllaBitDeathlyQuiet · 24/01/2011 22:47

No, it's just the (heave) gunk that smells, just clear your nose (double heave) as often as possible.

I think I had it maybe 15 years ago, and I still panic if I smell something rotten - thinking IT'S BACK.

Valpollicella · 24/01/2011 22:48

Deathly, the first time I whiffed it I honestly thought 'Omg, something has crawled behind a cupboard and died' Confused

OP posts:
Valpollicella · 24/01/2011 22:49

Yep, been evacuating the premises as much as possible today...

When I had it I worked in a kitchen. Very tricky.. I chucked out tonnes of food before I realised.

pipsqueak · 24/01/2011 22:52

i can add to the boak factor - i have had an ear infecton which i have treated with antibiotics and now drops but when i lie down it oozes and the stuff that comes out honks --when i wake up in teh morning my hair is stuck to the side of my face with the overflow!! seriously grim so you have my sympathies!

ItsAllaBitDeathlyQuiet · 24/01/2011 22:55

Oh Pip, grim.

As I would say to my daughter: Isn't it great all that yuckiness is coming OUT - that's a GOOD THING!

Then(HEAVE).

jellycat · 24/01/2011 23:03

Gosh, poor you, that sounds horrible. I would be inclined to contact the doctors again to see what they say. However, and apologies if you are already doing this, but I do find using steam really helps clear my sinuses. Either steaming over a jug of hot water (I don't add any Karvol/Olbas oil or anything, just use steam) or even have a shower before going to bed. You won't necessarily feel any better at the time but the following morning you should feel the difference.

I've used Nasonex too. It's a steroid spray, similar to Beconase. I have it because I have an allergy (probably to dust) so I produce a lot of nasal mucus all the time and it gives me chronic sinusitis if not controlled. I'm not sure it would help you though, it depends on the cause of the sinusitis I suppose.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

pipsqueak · 24/01/2011 23:04

yes, it is a good thing if a tad unsettling! poor dh - i feel a bit sorry for him really b ut not as sorry as i feel for myself!

Valpollicella · 24/01/2011 23:41

Thanks to you all for sharing your infected smelling head stories. I feel a bit better that this might be normal but I will definately go back to the doctors to be sure.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 24/01/2011 23:43

I get woeful sinus pain, but as yet I haven't had dead mouse smell in my face.

Yay me.

Grin
Valpollicella · 24/01/2011 23:53

It's not even dead mouse smell...it's beyond that

Thank god for the internet. I don't think I would have felt comfortable talking to anyone face to face tonight

On a thread a while ago someone advised me to get a neti pot which I did for my sinusy ds.

He likes it. And as we're being brutally and boakingly honest on this thread, the first time he used it I watched as a yellowy green plug of some length emerged slowly from his nostril.

Rank of all horrors! He said it felt great though.

Valpollicella · 25/01/2011 00:03

I'll try anything right now! Thanks Spidermama for the suggestion

OP posts:
rowingboat · 25/01/2011 12:31

Hi again,
I see you have had lots of input here, but just wanted to second the neti pot type idea.
When I had sinusitis last year I started using a jug, but moved on to this.
I found this a lot easier to use because you can stand up over a sink and control the flow of the saline. It is quite important to dry] your nasal passaged after doing it otherwise the water can get a bit trapped (I found), but it does provide tremendous relief.
If you use the steroid spray (nasonex or similar) to reduce inflammation and then do the nasal irrigation around 20 minutes later, it really brings out the nasty, infected mucous.
Steam works well to get things moving as well, particularly if you put in some vaporub or tea tree oil, or both.
Sleeping as much as possible is supposed to have huge benefits with these types of infections.
If you aren't able to sleep at night, take some time through the day.

anniepanniepears · 25/01/2011 12:36
