Have been moaning about my pill, have had a thread on here before about tried a new pillfor 3 months went back today and saw a different DR said I wasn't happy...

long and short of it is - gp tried to blind me with science then basically said all pills were the same just made up slightly differently so that pharmacuetical(sp?) companys could make more money. Also so that women felt they had a choice even though they don't really.

Also said that no wonder I felt crappy and pregnant on the one I tried it's because I'm pumping my body full of hormones AND if he was a women there's no way he'd take the contraceptive pill!!!!!!!!

Oh and to top it off the coil might make me infertile (2nd DR to tell me this) and the injection will make me fat hairy and miserable.

Needless to say I'm back on my original pill and feeling pretty pissed off.

note to self - must think of snappier thread titles

Blimey! Sounds like the gp was having an off day. I've had the coil and went on to have 3 children pretty smartish. I wouldn't take the pill again though. Always a bit wary of things promoted by men that they wouldn't taken themselves .

happymerryberries · 06/10/2005 16:25

All the combined pills have the same oestrogen in them. So if it is the oestrogen that is giving you problems then your doctor is quite correct. However the progestogens in them are different. If it is the progestogen in the pill that is giving you probelms, so for eaxmple making your skin greasy, probelms with facial hair etc then it can be worth changing them.

Regarding the pill and infertility, most of the probelms with that are caused by an increased risk of infection. If you are in a stable relationship this reduces the risk.....not completely IYSWIM

Trust me used used to work for one of those 'dreadful' companies that make contraceptives! I've read the studies!

expatinscotland · 06/10/2005 16:29

Progesten and my body don't get along well. I was on a pill w/an androgen blocker called Dianette that just rocked, so they're not all the same.

Depo I have my reservations about, mainly b/c EVERYONE I know who has taken it and gained weight - some of them quite a bit. And there's no other real explanation for their gains.

The coil is a no go for me b/c it's progesten based.

Yuk!

MassacreOHara · 06/10/2005 16:29

I had minulet once, had to stop that as it gave me terrible terrible migrainse (I couldn't get out of bed for 3 days a month) went on to Trinordial for 10years (rough guess) and just tried Cilest.. don't know the difference between any of the stupid things all I know is that Cilest made my boobs permemntanly sore (and grow 2 cup sizes) and gave me problems down below.

OP posts:
MassacreOHara · 06/10/2005 16:30

bloody fed up about it all really.

Also told me I needed more phsiotherapy even without checking out my symptoms. Just crap I thought, actuall have been on the verge of writing a letter of complaint

OP posts:
happymerryberries · 06/10/2005 16:30

The progestogen in cilest is one of the most 'oestrogenic', so may well cause sore boobs, but is less likely to cause acne. Other progestogens are more 'androgenic' IYSWIM

MassacreOHara · 06/10/2005 16:51

You sound very clued up HMB.. he looked at me like I was stupid when I said about having had sore boobs.. I persevered for 3 months thinking once my bopdy had got used to the change they'd not be too bad but they are soo tender. I've honeslty felt pregnant for the last 3 months iykwim feeling bloated, tender boobs, lathargic the works

rightroyalrocket · 06/10/2005 16:53

Out of interest, when he said the coil might make you infertile, did he mean the 'standard' coil or the hormone one?

ScreamEagle · 06/10/2005 16:54

I have the t-safe coil which has no hormone in it at all. Fell pregnant within 2/3 months of having it out when ttc ds3 and ds4.

I will never take the pill again as in one way or another it messed up my cycle big time.

bobbybob · 06/10/2005 16:58

expat - we can only get dianette in NZ if you pay for it - is it worth paying for?

MassacreOHara · 06/10/2005 16:59

Well I posted on the coil thread a while ago about this.

Both doctors that I've seen have asked if I plan to have more children to which both times I've answered 'yes but not for at least 3 years' straight away both of them have sai that they don't recommend coil as a form of contraception for women who would like more children as sometimes - not always but sometimes they can cause infertility through infections.

The last doctor did have the good grace to offer me the dutch cap. I thought maybe I could start using the old fashioned sanitary towels that you were a belt with!!

OP posts:
MassacreOHara · 06/10/2005 17:00

sorry what is Dianette?

OP posts:
Laylasmum · 06/10/2005 17:08

Dianette isn't actually liscensed for use solely as a contraceptive, its license is for treatment of acne, but has the side effect of suppressing ovulation. It tends to be given to women who have bad acne and is one of the managements of polycystic ovary syndrome symptoms ( hairy skin, acne, weight gain). it does have an increased risk of thrombosis over and above the risk of ordinary pills and gudelines state that no woman should be on it for more than 2 years.

bobbybob · 06/10/2005 17:25

Not for me then. Thanks.

We have one here called Yasmin. Anyone tried that?

happymerryberries · 06/10/2005 17:47

MoH I used to work for the company that makes Cilest

For some women it works well, but not everyone

happymerryberries · 06/10/2005 17:48

Actually the diaphragm is ace, I used it for over a year and found it very good.

TinyGang · 06/10/2005 17:55

Just don't have the injection. Can't vouch for the 'hairy' bit, but he has a point with the rest

expatinscotland · 06/10/2005 20:30

Bobby
I developed HORRENDOUS cystic acne after delivering DD - on my back, shoulders and chest. So bad I could not carry a handbag w/o extreme pain.

Dianette cleared it up w/i one cycle.

So if you have acne, I'd talk to your doctor - it may be worth it. It certainly was to me.

DH is having a vasectomy after this one - no. 2 - is born. His choice. I'll be using a diaphram till he has the procedure and is given the all clear.

Pinotmum · 06/10/2005 20:39

After stopping b/f I asked for dianette as I had permanent clusters of spots and thankfully dianette cleared it up but my gp would only prescribe for 1 yr max due to thrombosis risk. I was then given Yasmin which I have been on for 2 years now and it's fine but I hate having to remember to take it. I want dh to have the snip but he says he's too busy to have recovery time off - wimp! I have considered the coil but I'm undecided. Btw won't be having more children as too old now

expatinscotland · 06/10/2005 20:42

I can't do progestens, so the Mirena is out for me. I have personal issues w/how the copper coil works - just myself. DH decided long ago that he wanted the snip.

Pinotmum · 06/10/2005 20:50

Dh was really coming round to the idea until he spoke to a friend who had just had it done. Dh didn't say he was considering it to this guy but this guy laid it on so thick that dh waddled away from the conversation with his legs firmly crossed and then came up with the "too busy to take time off as a self employed bread winner" excuse! I've not given up yet though [evil laugh]

expatinscotland · 06/10/2005 20:54

Puh-leeze.

Someone here once posted about the no vasectomy-no sex motivation.

Pinotmum · 06/10/2005 21:04

PMSL - he says if he GOT sex he may consider it again! We're going round in ever decreasing circles in this house

hellomama · 06/10/2005 21:24

Just to clear up the issue about coils and infections....

No coil will give you an infection. FACT. However, should you get a sexually transmitted infection, or already have one when the coil is fitted, then it is likely to make the infection MUCH worse. STI's like chlamydia and gonorrhoea normally live either in the vagina or around the neck of the womb. Because the coil has a thread which hangs down into the vagina to aid removal (and for the woman to check it is in place), should you have one of these infections, it is able to use the coil thread to travel up into the womb and affect the tubes. This is what can cause infertility.

That is why most young people are not offered coils, because as a rule they tend to have multiple partners over a series of years, so the risk of contracting an infection is higher. However, if you have one, trusted partner, then coils are extremely good contraception. They are not the same ones our parents used to use. Obviously there are side effects, but i just wanted to clarify the issue about coils and infections and the link with infertility.
