Anyone heard of blood group diet? Am surprised at health implications?

I'm AB and apparently if I don't get my diet right then I could get stomach cancer. My sister died of that Sad I'm going to try to find out if she had the same blood group? Not sure if siblings have the same?

I usually poo poo such things but a lot of the things they say I shouldn't eat because of my lack of stomach acid, I do have problems with?

Am thinking of trying it. Although it does say I need to eat a lot of tofu and haven't cooked much with that.

I vaguely remember this from years ago. Something along the lines of people with different blood groups originating from different parts of the world and therefore more likely to have a diet rich in fruit, veg or meat. I'm not sure how true it is though.

I'm sorry about your sister. Perhaps given your family history, your doctor can give you advise.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 04/01/2011 09:24

Utter bollocks. Total and utter bollocks. Can I stress that enough?
I had friends who followed this, a more pallid set of individuals you could never hope to see.
Regarding the stomach cancer, I would be looking toward medicine for advice rather than total and utter BOLLOCKS*

franke · 04/01/2011 09:27

As far as I remember the 'inventor' of this diet has promised research to back up his theory, but has yet to produce anything credible. Take it with a large pinch of salt. Review here

Thanks, did worry me when I read about the stomach cancer. We do have a lot of digestive problems in our family as did my dad. He died of heart problems though at 57.

I'm A+ and am supposed to fare much better on a vegetarian diet Hmm. Problem is I can tolerate vegetables as a side dish to a nice bloody piece of steak and except tangerines and watermelon, cannot stand fruit.
I think it's bullshit, tbh.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/01/2011 09:34

What a pernicious claim - follow this diet or you will get stomach cancer.

What a crock of SHIT. It is like a bloody chain letter.

Ignore ignore ignore.

LostArt · 04/01/2011 09:36

LOL. When I wrote 'I'm not sure how true it is' that was my diplomatic way of saying kreechers 'utter bollocks' Grin

Clockface · 04/01/2011 09:39

I've read it and I'd also say it's a pile of poo. There is no scientific basis to it whatsoever. Low fat, healthy, varied diet and exercise is the way to go.

Curiousmama · 04/01/2011 09:47

I wasn't looking to follow it to lose weight. My friend just gave me it amongst other books and I was looking through it. I'm trying to lose a dress size but have joined the gym (which I enjoy) and have cut down on fats. I still eat olive oil and use it in cooking. And use olive oil spread but in moderation.

I was just concerned when I read about the stomach cancer and other problems that my blood type is apparently prone to.

I am AB+, too. So what do I eat and not eat to avoid cancer? Wink If only it were that simple... (sigh).

I heard of this first about 25 years ago, although nothing about cancer (although there is plenty evidence of a link between certain blood types and certain cancers, see here and here). I think dietary changes are often worth a try, but you do it in your own way, to the extent that you can see it fits you.

The mechanisms of how blood type links to increased cancer risk probably isn't well understood, so it's hard to know if a special diet for only that particular blood type is a good way to lower the risk (versus other things we can all do, or specific medications other lifestyle changes just for that group). Does D'Adamo provide evidence of where diet alone seems to have lowered the risk for populations?

Don't the Japanese believe strongly in blood types, especially for romantic compatibility? I suspect that the Japanese often have very different ideas from the D'Adamo guy whose book that OP is referring to, I imagine; I would go with the Japanese literature on this, instead, trying to track down original sources.

ragged · 04/01/2011 12:08

From what I've read type AB can eat close to they want anyway, OP, as long as it's in moderation.

However Confused... Black tea is bad for ALL blood types, and coffee is "beneficial for Types AB and all but type O.

So how do they reckon that, and why do I as a type AB consider coffee to be one of the most vile substances ever known to man? Also, what are the health problems from a Type O ingesting too much black tea it is supposed to be "harmful" to their cells? -- MIL has 7 cups a day and has for 50 years, she seems pretty healthy to me...

I've noticed that most Type Bs really don't like tomatos, especially raw, that's one bit of the diet theory I do believe in.

Curiousmama · 04/01/2011 13:23

Dp is type B and loves tomatoes Wink

Never heard of the Japanese ideology will have to have a look google.

OP posts:
Curiousmama · 04/01/2011 13:25

Had a brief look and according to Japanese and their blood group beliefs type B (as in Dp) are selfish. Couldn't be more wrong. I'm sure there's a lot more to it so will have another look.

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 04/01/2011 13:27

"I'm sure there's a lot more to it"

No no no, it's the opposite.

There is nothing to it.

It is all made up. Imaginary. Fiction. Not true.

said · 04/01/2011 13:30

Obviously it's all bollocks but as another AB+ I will, selectively, agree with this bit "From what I've read type AB can eat close to they want anyway, OP, as long as it's in moderation." Yay! Grin

Himalaya · 04/01/2011 13:31

Just came on here to say it is a load of nonsense. But see a lot of people have beat me to it. Grin

Curiousmama · 04/01/2011 13:44

Trillian I meant the Japanese romance thing not the diet.

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 04/01/2011 13:53

Well there's no reason why your blood group would affect your romantic compatibility either.

If anything, blood type is more likely to correlate with health/diets/etc (being physiological and therefore having a strong genetic component) than it is personality (being much more subject to environment growing up, etc).

throckenholt · 04/01/2011 13:58

If your sister died of stomach cancer and if any other close female relatives died of any other abdominal cancer including ovarian cancer then there might be a genetic link. There is something (can't remember what) that relates those in female family members. I need to check it out because my nan had stomach cancer and my mum has had ovarian cancer.

Not sure if it has anything to do with blood type though. I have no idea what type any of us are (keep forgetting to ask my gp).

yama · 04/01/2011 14:19

Doesn't Cliff Richard follow this type of diet?

Make of that what you will. Wink

Curiousmama · 04/01/2011 14:49

Eeek if Sir Cliff follows it then it's a no no Wink He looks like the living dead he's so scrawny.

My sis smoked and didn't have a good diet whereas I eat loads of veg, veggie food etc.. but meat too. She also ignored her stomach pain for a long time Sad If it is genetic and I get it then hopefully they can catch it earlier? Hope you'll be ok throkenholt.

Blondes lose weight if they eat anchovies or pilchards, but cannot tolerate turbot or any kind of brassica vegetable.

Brunettes must eat starch at every meal.

Gingers must avoid tomatoes and citrus fruits and are best off eating dairy food.

Black people must not eat lentils or it will give them acne.

There. I should write a book.

Curiousmama · 04/01/2011 15:13

Grin happy to hear about the starch

OP posts:
TrillianAstra · 04/01/2011 16:55

Freckled people should not eat anything dot-like. No lentils or peas unless pureed.
