I have perpetually cold feet and as the summer is coming to an end (sob)they are getting worse. I have decided that this winter I WILL NOT SUFFER and I am asking your advice on what are the warmest, cosiest socks, boots, slippers etc. I spend most of the morning in the park with kids and dog so need shoes/boots that are waterproof or water resistent. Wellies are a no no, even with thermal insoles my feet are like frozen slabs of meat within half an hour. And they take all day to warm up, sometimes I have to even run them under the hot tap to thaw them out. Please help meeeeeee.........

How about going to somewhere like millets and getting socks and footwear designed for outdoor pursuits? Also you can buy silk socks that you wear under (or over?) normal socks

Cha · 26/09/2005 15:10

There isn't a millets anywhere near me but yes, that is a good idea - anything outdoor pursuits-y would be a good start. Silk socks - wow. Any idea where you would get such a lux item?

Not sure, I always see ads for silk socks in the back of the Observer magazine and the like. Try googling?

Any camping shop should sell a range of thermal footwear I would think ... or you could buy online

I apologise to all those who think ugg boots are out of date but my sheepskin boots are the first things to ever keep my feet warm.
Mine are these from the Celtic Sheepskin Company. And this year I have also bought their slippers which are keeping my feet warm this very minute.
I bought my boots last year after a recommendation from another mumsnetter and have not regretted the expense at all.

cupcakes · 26/09/2005 15:14

(and I wore my boots all last winter in the rain and snow and they're still great now)

expatinscotland · 26/09/2005 15:16

I was once a keen outdoors enthusiast and athlete. In winter, I'd use a sock liner - usually silk but some are made w/synthetic fibres that are breathable - plus a wool sock (SmartWool or Thorlo). Keeps the feet nice and toasty. Also if you sprinkle the sock liner w/cayenne pepper.

Also, make sure your shoes or boots aren't too tight.

Cha · 26/09/2005 15:25

Thanks folks - those boots look really snug, cupcakes. Will they keep the water out though? I have to tramp across wet grass sometimes or even venture into a puddle to rescue a child - would they leak or get damp?
Cayenne pepper - never heard of that before! Good tip about the shoes being too tight - that is def the problem with my current trainers, not tight enough to hurt but my feet are always cold and clammy in them.

Where can I get these lovely things?

wet grass would be fine, I'm not so sure about wading in puddles! Although my dd has a pair and she goes in puddles in them (although splashing, not wading!) and her socks stay dry.
Some of the boots have a more polished finish (nappa?) which might be more water resistant.
I sprayed mine with suede protector and they've been fine.

dropinthe · 26/09/2005 17:39

Toasties from all good Boots outlets!

dropinthe · 26/09/2005 17:40

They probably have their own website too!

Cha · 26/09/2005 17:41

Am seriously tempted by cupcakes' suggestion tho somewhat baulking at £92... However, if it means warm feet all winter through, maybe it would be worth it?

dropinthe · 26/09/2005 17:43

Mine only cost a tenner FFS!

cupcakes · 26/09/2005 17:47

I seriously baulked too. But as I wore them almost every day for 6 months it turned out to be worth it.

Cha · 26/09/2005 17:51

£10???!!! But were they real sheepskin tho... I suppose if it's 'pound per wear' that trinny and susanna are always on about, then £92 is not so bad. I would wear them every day for 6 months too. Tried the ecco link but could find no women's wear...

OP posts:
cupcakes · 26/09/2005 17:53

(I think dropinthe means her toasties, not boots)

Cha · 26/09/2005 17:55

Oh. Doh. And double doh - sorry hausfrau, found the boots on the ecco site, but no price (the really important thing) - how much did they cost?

OP posts:
bubblerock · 26/09/2005 18:03

Get a pair of these microwaveable slippers for when you get in from the cold (don't wear them outside unless you really want to embarass the kids!)

NotQuiteCockney · 26/09/2005 19:02

Cha, the Canadian solution to all this is: good boots, warm woollen socks (with other socks underneath), and a WARM HAT. If you're wearing a hat, your body warmth can be sent to less important bits like hands and feet. No hat, and your body spends all its warmth keeping your head warm.

motherinferior · 26/09/2005 19:37

Cha, I get unspeakably cold feet too - only good bit of being pregnant for me was that I didn't have to wear two pairs of socks that winter. OK, my absolute top recommendation is the sheepskin insoles from the same Celtic Sheepskin company. Every single pair of winter shoes/boots I possess has a pair of these inserted into them (sometimes I think they might even bump me up to a size four ).

Milletts etc - there's one in Lewisham, round on the 185 bus - sells thick thick 'loop' socks. Men's socks in general often look like a good bet if you are not a mutant with size 3 feet who has to wear children's socks, in fact.

I haven't tried silk socks partly on account of aforementioned mutancy but you can get them here
