why on earth are my ribs so sore?

probably one of those imponderable questions but why on earth are my ribs so sore this evening? I have a sore throat and a bit of a cough that started today (mild cold I'm sure) and my arthritis is flaring this week. All day when I've coughed I've had to hold my sides and my lower ribs feel incredibly bruised to touch. I'd understand it if I had a chest infection or a prolonged severe cough but I have neither.
I suspect I'm suffering from pathetic-itis but other thoughts welcome.

Chest infection? Go to the GP and get it checked.

BelleDeChocChipCookieMonster · 11/11/2010 22:01

Does it hurt when you breathe, out or all the time?

KatyMac · 11/11/2010 22:04

I had this about 10 days ago - GP said it was a virus

Mine hurt on my breastbone and the bottom round the side to the back

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/11/2010 22:21

only hurts when I breathe in deeply, or cough ( hurts lots) or laugh and hurts very much if I prod them. I don't think it is a chest infection as it seems to be much more rib than lung. I guess its probably the same virus as katymac. are you better yet Katymac?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 11/11/2010 22:24

Kind of

The ribs are better (lasted about 4 days) & now I have the chest infection

Hmm

If it's only on breathing and not on prodding it could have been pleurisy

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/11/2010 22:28

what an odd way round - perhaps the pain stopped you from coughing properly so you developed the infection?

OP posts:
blinks · 11/11/2010 22:29

you should get checked over in case it's possible pleurisy/pulmonary edema.

if you have any shortness of breath or cough up blood/pink get thine arse to t'hospital.

BelleDeChocChipCookieMonster · 11/11/2010 22:31

I'd pop and see your GP. It could be pleurisy, he/she needs to have a listen though. I could also be a pulled muscle or inflammation of the cartilage. Ibuprofen should help though (don't take if you are asthmatic/allergic)

I hope you feel better soon.

KatyMac · 11/11/2010 22:31

Who knows

But we are quite aggressive with chest infections in our house

My cough & pain came on almost over night - whereas this infection came on over a few days & I started the abs when I had coloured phlegm (sorry)

I had hoped DH had escaped but today he has gone downhill quite fast Sad - do I ring Papworth tomorrow or wait until Monday

KatyMac · 11/11/2010 22:34

Sorry - going on again......Blush

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/11/2010 22:40

not at all katymac I'd ring tomorrow, better than worrying over the weekend.

I'm on diclofenac anyway (on and off as I don't like it, kills my appetite and makes my tummy uncomfy) so I'll make sure I keep topped up with that and make an appt in the morning if it's not improving. Off to bed now - thank you for the advice :)

I think my DH has the same as you!

Weirdly enough he is on diclofenic too.

GP said that he has probably pulled a muscle when he has been coughing.

Hope you are all feeling better soon.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2010 07:21

thats why I'm a bit embarrassed to go to the doctor. do feel quite under the weather (groan) this am, so will make up my mind in a bit.

OP posts:
blinks · 12/11/2010 08:50

don't be an ass.

Butterbur · 12/11/2010 08:53

Could you have torn an intercostal muscle coughing?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2010 09:57

Butterbur, I don't think so because I was only coughing a very little bit when it started being sore, out of all proportion to the cough and they started up at the same time. You never know though. It is on both sides but worse on one.

lol blinks! say it how it is Grin I've made an appointment for this afternoon. Diclofenac isn't making any difference at all to it and even if all the gp says is rest and take painkillers then that is better than ending up at ooh in a pickle over the weekend.

OP posts:
blinks · 12/11/2010 13:12

arf... good luck with the appointment.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2010 17:36

bit of a virus Blush muscular and possibly a bit of cartilage involved. gp was lovely, thinks the arthritis could be making me more vulnerable. regular anti-inflamms and rest. I intend to take her advice on that this weekend as I've been hobbling round like a loon all week trying to keep up with everything despite my joints flaring.

KatyMac · 12/11/2010 21:10

Glad you were seen today

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2010 21:25

thanks. how are you and your dh doing?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 12/11/2010 21:28

I'm not feeling too good but DH is better (he takes all that medication so it must be keeping it at bay)

I spent all afternoon glueing sequins on DD's dress (picture of profile)

Are you taking it easy? I'm at an OU tutorial tomorrow

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/11/2010 21:36

beautiful! is that your dd?

for once I'm going to really pay attention to the gp and rest. I've been struggling on for a few weeks and ignoring the warning signs and that is silly. So after dd has been riding and done a bit if food shopping tomorrow I'm going to rest up on the sofa with a book and the telly. Else I will end upbeing no use to anyone.

ou tutorial is not great - hard to make yourself comfy and get the rest you need.

OP posts:
KatyMac · 12/11/2010 21:42

You must chill

(those sequins took hours Wink)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/11/2010 08:39

I'm not surprised! I hope your tutorial goes well.

KatyMac · 13/11/2010 20:01

It went really well thanks

How are you feeling
