Ovarian Cyst - f**k!!

Sexonlegs · 09/11/2010 21:37

I have had an internal scan today (always a joy!) and they have said I have an ovarian cyst.

What they haven't said is what type etc etc. She was quite evasive and said I should talk to my GP.

I am now shitting myself.

I have seen on MN that a fair few people have had these, but can anyone tell me what happens next? How do they figure out what type it is to then know how to treat it?

Thank you :)

Morning :)

My periods are still as regular as clockwork.

Pain not too bad tbh, just every now and then I get quite a sharp twinge which kind of takes your breath away.

Had a great night out last night at the school quiz which helped focus the mind away from the OC!!

Trouble is, as soon as I get in to bed, my mind starts whirring and I tie myself in knots.

You're luckier than me! I get plenty of pain free time when not ovulating but as ovulation hits, I can end up literally doubled over which sucks heh.

Glad you had a great night out last night! Nothing like a night out to make you feel better Wink

I do that when I get to bed sometimes too SoL, I don't think either of us will be able to stop that one Confused

Heh, I just got a letter from the hospital this morning, they've changed my appointment to the 15th instead ugh!

WildPansy · 13/11/2010 11:15

I had a 10cm dermoid, removed by keyhole when I was 23. Mine announced itself through referred pain in my left big toe, and was found by my GP when she did an internal, then identified by ultrasound. I agree that you should try and keep in mind that most cysts are benign -- the what ifs can really eat you up. I went quite crazy while waiting for news on mine and anything you can do to not panic is useful. Easier said than done, I know. I'm sure you'll have another scan, it sounds like they need to know more. Good luck Smile.

HonestyBox · 13/11/2010 11:42

Thanks for this info ladies. I have a number of symptoms: ovulation pain at odd times during the month (often to do with going to the loo for either wees or poos - sorry if tmi). V. bad pain on the lower right when I'm running and v. light periods but regular. I don't know if I'm ovulating but I have a lot of ewcm (want to ttc soon). The light periods worry me a lot and have mentioned it to GP before.

WildPansy · 13/11/2010 11:48

HB it sounds like you really need to be checked out -- have you told your GP the story about pain? The pain associated with loo trips is familiar to me, though of course that does not mean you necessarily have what I had. To me it seems clear you need a scan.

Sexonlegs · 14/11/2010 19:47

Hi HonestyBox, no harm in getting checked out for peace of mind. Hope you are ok.

Well, tis my appointment tomorrow morning, so I shall come back on and let you know what's happening. Not stressed at the moment but am sure tomorrow will be a different matter!!

I have been having a stitch type pain since the summer but ignored it as it came and went so kept hoping it wouldn't come back. In the end my DH made me go to the GP because I was in agony in the early hours for nights at a time - seems to be worse at night? As I never really kept a note of dates I couldn't say when I was getting pain so GP sent me for an ultrasound. The hospital said I had a cyst and fibroids but couldn't tell me any more as she needed to check the scan thoroughly(I knew I had fibroids because the surgeon who performed my C-Section told me 15 years ago). The results have just arrived at GP's (three weeks later!)so I am going this a.m to see him but on Saturday I had another appointment from the hospital for another ultrasound and a transvaginal scan. As I don't really know what they have found it's a bit worrying to get another appointment before I see my GP.

Sexonlegs · 15/11/2010 12:08

Morning all.

Petal, hope everything goes ok for you.

Back from the gynae. They think it might be an endometrioma (sp?) cyst. I had another internal (I tell you, more women have had their fingers up me in the past week than my dh!!) Grin

They are also arranging an MRI scan and I had a blood test for CA125.

It was so stressful, but I feel a bit re-assured. She said there was no blood flowing through it which is a good sign.

How is everyone else?

OP posts:
dietqueen · 15/11/2010 21:12

I also have a cyst on my ovary - its 2cm and its an endometriosis.

I have been scanned every 6 months - my consultant said that if it was 5cm - they automatically go in and have a look at it.

They also scan every 6 months as malignant growths/cysts grow rapidally he told me...mine has grown 1cm in 12 months.

He wont remove mine as it is small and I am managing on pain killers and there is chance the ovary may get damaged.

WildPansy · 15/11/2010 22:34

Glad you're feeling a bit better Sexonlegs.

QuietTiger · 16/11/2010 14:44

I'm currently recovering from a laparotomy (I have 30 stitches, due out thurs Grin) which I had on 8th Nov to remove an 10cm endometriotic cyst. It was all very quick with me, I went to get my merina coil removed 4 weeks ago to start TTC, the GP couldn't find the strings and sent me for a scan to check the coil was in place. At the scan, an "ovarian mass" was found. was referred to a gynaecologist, had the CA125 blood tests and they came back at around the 200 mark... so was packed off to the Gynacologist Oncologist & told it could well be ovarian cancer. The night before surgery I was advised that I would likely be waking up with a hysterectomy, but the surgeon told me he would try and be conservative.

Surgeon was superb, he's removed what he belives was an endometriotic cyst (Thank God it wasn't cancer), salvaged 50 % of my left ovary (which the cyst was on) and my right ovary is intact. First the first time in about 4 years I also have no back pain. It's bloody marvelous. We're now waiting for the biopsy results to hopefully confirm it's not cancer.

I've never been so bloody scared in my life, but what the oncologist did tell me was that fibroids, endometriosis and various other gynae problems can cause raised CA125 markers, and in his experience those who have been found to have ovarian cancer have usually had raised levels about the 400 mark. Obviously that's not a categorical statement though.

Sending hugs that things are OK. xxx

Sexonlegs · 16/11/2010 17:19

Blimey QT, hope you are ok. That's a lot of stitches. I thought/hoped they were dissolvable!

It is so scary waiting for results isn't it? Did you have an MRI as well?

The gynae told me the CAT125 results might be higher if it is an endometrium cyst.

Best of luck with it all, and the ttc.

OP posts:
QuietTiger · 16/11/2010 17:57

Internal stitches are disolvable, external (the 30) are staples. DH keeps referring to "my zip" and threatening to undo it! Grin.

I had a full CT scan 2 days before surgery with the injected radioactive dye etc, but no MRI.

Gynae is spot on with the raised CA125 markers and endometriosis, also with fibroids. Apparently, (certainly where I am in Cardiff) if it's "suspected cancer" then the NHS guidelines are to try and shedule surgery within 4 weeks, so depending on your results things might happen quite quickly. also, if they suspect cancer/query cancer then you are more likely to have a laparotomy rather than laproscopy.

Very best of luck. :)

QT

Alaya · 16/11/2010 19:55

Hey sexonlegs I'm glad that the scan went well and I hope the tests come back in the clear for you :)

I have to admit QT I had a jawdrop moment when I read your post, I've never heard of that many stitches before and I hope that you come back with an all-clear :)

Heh, your DH sounds kinda funny with the promise of unzipping. I hope you promised lots of pain if he tried!

QuietTiger · 17/11/2010 14:41

I was opened from my belly button to my pubic bone. I have to say, my scar is very impressive. Grin the nurse took out the staples today and there were actually 34! My DH is wonderful, he told me that my new scar just made me more unique and special. :) I've very lucky to have him, so I can put up with the jokes about zips, LOL! Wink

Sexonlegs · 17/11/2010 17:15

Wow QT! Your dh sounds v supportive.

My dh is being fab as well. He said he hadn't realised how much he loved me until all this kicked off [cheesy grin]!

I am booked in for an MRI on the 25th November. Crapping it! More concerned that I have to take my make-up off Grin

How long do CA125 results take to come back?

Have you had all your results back now?

Alaya how are you doing?

OP posts:
QuietTiger · 17/11/2010 17:38

Biopsy results are back on 1st Dec, but I'm not too worried as the surgeon said that he was 99% sure it was an endometriotic cyst. Hopefully I won't be blindsided. My CA125 results took about a week as they went via the GP who was useless

Yes, my DH is amazing. :)

Sexonlegs · 17/11/2010 20:23

Can they tell you at the CT/MRI scan as to what the score is, or do you have to wait long?

It really is the waiting that does it for me.

Luckily we move house next week so I have a lot to occupy me :)

OP posts:
QuietTiger · 18/11/2010 09:55

They tend not to at the scan because it has to be properly interpreted by the radiologist/specialist. I was lucky in that I had it on the Friday and was scheduled for surgery on the Monday, but by that point had all my consults with the consultant so knew what the CA125 markers were etc.

I agree with you about the waiting, but try to think of it as the next step forward. My consultant said that the only reason he wanted the CT scan was so he had a picture of what he was dealing with before he went in, so to speak.

PM me off list if you want to chat/need support, I've been through it all and I know how you're feeling. sometimes it just helps to speak to someone who's been there. :)

Alaya · 18/11/2010 21:18

sigh

I usually have 30 day cycles bu thanks to this cyst, I'm now on cycle day 42 and no sign of a period anywhere grrrr Angry

You're right QT, it helps to have someone who has been through the wringer before (not that I'd wish that on anyone!) because you know exactly what can happen :)

Sexonlegs · 18/11/2010 22:15

Evening ladies :)

Thanks QT. It is lovely to chat to people who have been through it all. I love MN for that.

My periods are as regular as clockwork, although I have noticed that there has been a slow build up to it, then 1 nasty full-on day and then it peters out again - sorry for tmi!!

I am really bloated today; I look about 4 months pg. I am quite slim (8 1/2 stone, 5' 6", size 10) so I feel like I look huge!!

QT have you had your stitches out today? How was it?

Alaya, how are you doing apart from waiting for your period to show?

OP posts:
QuietTiger · 19/11/2010 08:06

Ended up going to the GP and having the staples out on Wednesday afternoon - all 34 of them, she counted! There's a sore spot which is a bit weepy (I know, TMI Wink), but DH has gone into over protecive overdrive, bless him. The only problem I have with the OP now is the major bloating. Very uncomfortable, especially when the cat wants to sit on my lap. :( Having said that, I am really suprised at how quickly I seem to be recovering, although I can't lift anything or do any serious housework (hoovering etc). You can imagine that I'm gutted about that!! Grin

TBH, I'm at the opposite end of Alaya in that I'm hoping my period doesn't show. Wink.

QT

Sexonlegs · 19/11/2010 11:18

QT, I am a muppet. Sorry I knew you had your stitches out cos you said you had counted 34!

Bugger about the housework Grin. Actually I think I am going to find that quite hard, as I am a real tidy freak and hate the house looking a mess [sad git]!

I am going to phone today and see if the blood results are back. I am absolutely sh*tting it though, but can't put it off any longer. The last 2 days I have done 1471 and there has been a call but no phone number. I keep thinking maybe its the GP/hospital..

Literally shaking :(

OP posts:
QuietTiger · 19/11/2010 12:48

I hope it goes OK. I'm sending hugs that it'll all be fine.

I saw the practice nurse at my GP practice today - she was the one who couldn't find the strings to my coil to remove it, then referred me to the Doctor who started all this...

She made me laugh when she checked my wound - she told me that she'd never had such an extreme reaction to not being able to find a coil before! Apparently most people get the gynaecologist to do it without the Laparotomy and 7" wound! LOL! Grin

Very best of luck. :)
QT
