I wondered if anyone would like to join me on what is going to be my LAST attempt to stop smoking? I have started champix today and pay to quit in a week or so. Anyone up for some virtual hand holding? I am desperate to quit successfully this time.

dontdisstheteens, I'd like to join this thread! I've given up for the second time, three days ago.

I'd not smoked for years but after a horribly stressful year, found myself having the odd one and you know how it goes. Light one and the addiction is on the backburner again . . .

I'm on the nicotine patches but the slightly less fierce ones (for 10 - 15 a day smokers). I tried the really strong patches and felt as dizzy as a pissed granny at a sherry party.

I've also decided to KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT (except on here!) about not smoking because personally I find the cheerleading really stressful. 'Oooh well done!' That way, if I relapse it's between me and my body and I won't have to deal with everyone else's disappointment too - adding to the pressure. But it's different for everyone. I don't think you can be 'shamed' into giving up.

Anyway it's Day Three, I'm trying not to nibble or drink too much coffee and I've got a horrible taste in my mouth!

Day three - you must be pleased. I thought that if I could get to a week (yesterday) then I would be safe. Unfortunately I do still want a cigarette. Anyone know how long this is likely to last?
I know what you mean about the cheer leading but I would like some encouragement! Tricky.

I am definitely having too much coffee but will worry about that another time. At the moment I am going to do whatever works. This has to be it for me. It has to be.

Wanting a cigarette can go on for years, but the cravings only last 2-3 minutes each time, so you can manage that.
You are doing well, and sure you're over the worst. Best wishes.

Ten days and desperate for a fag! Supposed to be writing but my concentration is shot to bits. Have been staring at a blank screen (mumsnetting) since Monday. ARGHHHHHHHH!

That is better - will try again.

I stopped by using the NHS course, where I chose the patches, and was informed that most people failed to stop as they under-estimated the amount of replacement nicotine required.

This course is definitely the easiest way; full of ideas what to do when cravings start, but briefly, I used to just juggle with (Avon) small soaps until I'd overcome the urge, or have a drink -water's ok -and look out of window.

Keep going - you can do it!

Am on day 5 of not smoking, i feel ok for a couple of hours and then have a wave of rage/panic/anger Blush

Have spent all my spare money on clothes so i can't go and buy any fags Grin

dontdisstheteens · 05/11/2010 12:31

BCW. Are you using Champix. Or nicotine?

Good idea to buy clothes. Will help you to fight any weight gain too!

Can I join as well.
Sort of gave up a week and a half ago, but succumbed to 2 on Saturday as we went to the pub. I am vrey ublikely to go to the pub again before Christmas so not too disappointed. Anyway none since the 30th Oct. I get the odd craving, including now as I am obviously thinking about it. However, the gaps between thinking about it are getting longer and the cravings are getting less.

dontdisstheteens · 05/11/2010 14:27

Cricky - I know if I had 20 it would be back to 20 a day straight away! You must be really pleased that you have managed to get back off them.

Hi, I hope it's ok for me to join in this thread.

Thanks dontdisstheteens for starting this thread. I have been looking everywhere for a place to vent and get support for giving up smoking.

I only smoke up to 5 a day, so think it's rather pathetic of me to not be able to stop. There are lozingers in my bag, which when taken work extremely well, however they are just sitting in my bag, because I enjoy the break and the whole my time with it.

I really want to want to quit but love it and really enjoy my 5 minute break from the kids (4 and 2½) and can't imagine having a 5 minute break without a fag in hand :(

Well done to all who have quit or are in the process of quitting, I think you're amazing and you should be extremely proud of yourselves!!!

becklet · 13/11/2010 15:35

Just seen this, can I join too? I've been on Champix for 18 days and gave up 8 days ago. Feel fine actually, although keep having sad moments when I see people having fag breaks, like I've lost an old friend! Sad

I was a really heavy smoker (25-30 a day) for 20+ years, and although I was still enjoying it, I kept getting really bad chest infections and knew I had to give up. Plus the £60 a week I'm putting away for holiday fund is helping! Smile

Well done to all of you who have stopped too! Have to say that Champix really is pretty freaky - it just seemed to make me forget to smoke!

BarkisIsWilling · 21/12/2010 19:51

Good luck, and hope it's going well.

An old post but thought I'd update on my experience.

Smoker of 43yrs (started at 11) and my children had no idea I smoked until they were 13 & 14 two years ago. So not a huge smoker between 4-8 per day. But, with the price of ciggies now over £10 a pack, I by chance bumped into an old friend from Manchester.

We agree to meet up and I asked her if she still smoked and she said yes but was hoping to give up in Feb. She had an ear stitch done at Hebden Bridge and, by the time we were meeting up in April some 8 weeks later, she was still a non-smoker.

So I booked in for 7pm on the 11th had it done and 48hrs later haven't touched a cigarette. Left the clinic three 15 away in the bin outside.

The next two mornings were absolutely fine, any smoker will readily admit that their first fag of the day is that one with a brew. Nope no cravings whatsoever :O)

My son when searching in the other car yesterday for his headphones yesterday told me he saw an unopened pack under the seat, yep it is there and will remain unopened. Will give them away when I go into work tomz

Only downside is that you find you do snack more and that a glass of wine is finished twice as quick as normal. Fortunately as a gym member (who goes 5 times a week and is the same weight at 54 that I was at 19) I'll just have to up my sessions.

I don't think that morningside clinic will be there for much longer as John is now 79 and told me he will take the technique to the grave with him :o(

Oh, on the subject of Champix, I am aware of a couple where the husband threw is wife down the stairs and his defence was the drug, he got off too!
