I wondered if anyone would like to join me on what is going to be my LAST attempt to stop smoking? I have started champix today and pay to quit in a week or so. Anyone up for some virtual hand holding? I am desperate to quit successfully this time.

We quit with champix, it's been 3 months for us.
My husband had no side effects but I had to drop back down to one tablet a day because 2 tablets made me nasty, depressed, paranoid & I went a bit weird for a while Hmm

I didn't finish the course as I really have no need to smoke & can't believe I ever smoked - I hate the smell & the thought of putting a fag in my mouth ever again makes me want to puke.

Good luck to you all x

lilyliz · 11/10/2010 18:21

soverign21 · 12/10/2010 00:11

Hey everyone

I decided today that i want to quit smoking and use the money i save to learn how to drive instead

Big step for me as i have a lot going on in my life but i want to change my life for the better and think this is a good first step

Am debating wether to go cold turkey or try champix (had patches before and they didnt work for me)
What do you think the best way would be?

dontdisstheteens · 12/10/2010 11:31

Reporting in. Failed at giving up yesterday but now know why.

PMT with a big boom! Have had one today, and on third day of full dose of champix (yes I know I was not planning on following instructions). My goal now is to make this packet last as long as possible and not buy anymore.

It is great to have company. I have been knitting a handbag forever (I know it sounds odd but it will be great!). I am going to get it out and have another go tonight.

In the meantime, in bed, solpadine max taken and will do some work! Please keep posting everyone. The new messages have helped me get back on track having fallen off already. I am going to do this this time.

PS I think I need a support to make myself work thread too!

I managed to stop when pregnant and not smoked since which was a few years ago now and it was the best thing ever. However, a freind of mine did use the stitch in ear technique and it worked. Another had NLP and swears by it.

casualmnetter · 13/10/2010 15:43

Meant to say good luck to you all who are trying to stop. Smile

dontdisstheteens · 14/10/2010 07:12

Morning anyone? Grin

Well had seven yesterday so down to less than half without a problem. Just need courage to go for it now!

How you all doing?

Just wanted to pop in and say good luck to you all, I am really impressed! Hopefully a child of this thread will still be going in autumn 2011, with the title "We haven't smoked since..."

soverign21 · 14/10/2010 17:13

Hey

Have decided my quit date is sunday am not buying anymore cigs (have bought enough till saturday) so fingers crossed

Keep up the good work DDTT you'll stop completely soon

gilbonzothesecretpsychoduck · 14/10/2010 17:33

I'm feeling inspired by this thread. I just love smoking so much and as people have already said, it's a big part of my identity. I also fear for the kids because I'm a bitch when I try to give up! I'm going to get the inlaws week long visit out of the way first and then give it another a go.

dontdisstheteens · 14/10/2010 20:13

So pleased I have company. I seem to have adjusted to the Champix, am over the PMT so need to set a date. Maybe I should join you on Soverign, maybe Sunday?

Bumping this for you dontdisstheteens, i have 3 cigarettes left and am considering just not buying anymore

Well done by the way, how are you feeling today?

Monty100 · 01/11/2010 15:06

OK, now look what you've made me do!!

I've just phoned and asked for an appointment with the 'smoking nurse' Grin to get some Champix.

I'm a 15-20 a day-er (yikes) but I've been thinking seriously recently about giving quitting a go.

Will I need to take the Champix before quitting? How does it work? Is it the best thing to ask for?

Thanks Dont and everybody for encouraging me to make the appointment Smile.

dontdisstheteens · 01/11/2010 16:18

I feel pretty pleased with myself - it will be a week at 11 am tomorrow!

There is no way I would manage this without champix. I have been a heavy smoker of real (not low tar, yuck) cigarettes for ever. You need to take it for a while before even thinking about quitting. It suggested that you quit somewhere between week one and two but it took me until week three before I felt able to go for it. My cigarette consumption had decreased dramatically by then and I felt confident it was habit not needing a fag that was left.

I do still have times when I would really like a smoke and am drinking way too much coffee to compensate. I can manage these moments though and I have never got this far before. I am ashamed to admit I even smoked when pregnant, very low tar and one a day. Even pregnancy could not get me to this stage.

I so hope I can really stick with it this time.

Dont - thanks for the info. Same here on all levels and even a B&H smoker Blush. You are giving me confidence to try at least. The first appointment I could get with the nurse is 1 December tho! Do you think GP might let me have the Champix before this? Did you use a 'smoking clinic?' I spend almost as much on smoking as I do on my mortgage Blush.

You are doing so well, congratulations, I'll bet you are delighted with yourself, you should be Smile.

dontdisstheteens · 01/11/2010 17:16

They might - it would help you get underway. Also some chemists can prescribe it for you and I think if you get it via a chemist you don't pay prescription charges.

That gold packet....mmmmm

No smoking clinic for me, have gone to them in the past but not for me really. Just needed to make up my mind and do it for me.

Is very strange DH has not said anything, but then I have been so cross with him in the past when he has tried to encourage me (pressure me) to stop. Sad

OP posts:
Monty100 · 01/11/2010 20:09

Dont - he probably doesn't want to mention it, I'm sure he has noticed and is delighted.

Mmmm the old gold packet, hope it's history soon. Wish I was where you are.

I might pop into the chemist and see what they say.

A knitted handbag sounds lovely :)

What are you planning to do with the money you save? :)

dontdisstheteens · 01/11/2010 21:13

Use it to help pay the bills Sad

I hope he is pleased, I just wish he would say something.

I stopped smoking six weeks ago. I'm using patches and nicotine sweets/tabs. I'm pretty much fine as long as I have a patch on. Feel pretty antsy still in the morning, until I get my patch on.

I miss smoking, and I think I always will, but I think I've pretty much cracked it now.

The best thing about, and this is totally vain, is that my teeth are whiter already!

I had tonsillitis a couple of weeks ago, the first time in years, and I think that had something to do with me giving up. I guess your body has to rid itself of all the toxins first before it becomes healthier.

Monty100 · 01/11/2010 21:28

Dont - he can't be anything but pleased. I guess a pat on the back wouldn't go amiss.

Yes, any money I save will just go towards the family too, dc's become more expensive in their teens and I'm feeling very selfish and guilty about the money I spend smoking :(

ladylush · 01/11/2010 21:36

Never smoked but just wanted to say good luck Smile

Monty100 · 01/11/2010 22:54

Blimey just re-read my post - obviously there's the health and vanity implications involved here too, I want to be around for as long as I can for dc's.

Dont - that was a metaphorical pat on the back by the way which I hope was obvious.

Hope all you giver uppers are doing well.

We must keep this going. There's the brave babes thread for the booze, perhaps we should fill this thread up and then think of a quirky title???

dontdisstheteens · 01/11/2010 23:34

Ta. Needed that pat on the back. X

Monty100 · 01/11/2010 23:50

Dont - You're welcome. Hope you're v v proud. x

Lady - keep it up :)
