hello mners
had one fitted about 3 months ago and im slowly sliding down a wave of depression there are other factors too (not major) but im feeling cr*p and im putting it down to the coil as i felt great before - ready to deal with anything sort of attitude. i have a ds nearly 3 and a dd 16 months and what im feeling is deffo not pnd .
have breastfed or been preg for the last 3 years so i thought the mirena and no periods (ive nearly forgotton what they are !) would be an easy option (turns out its not )

i just wondered if anyone else had felt like this after having a mirena fitted ?

ps i would love another baby but circumstance difficult at the moment so hence coil

Hello,

Im so happy that i came across this site! I had my coil fitted 3 months ago (the copper coil caused me to have 2-3 week periods). Since then my periods have pretty much stopped (barr the odd half a day) but i feel dreadful!!! I'm having to take naps during the day, i have NO motivation, i feel insecure and i KNOW its the coil.

After finding this site this morning, i felt confident to call my doctor and voice my concerns- i was pretty much told that i was imagining it and that there was no chance at all that it could be related to the coil. So again, i thought that it must be all in my mind, until re reading everyones post again tonight.

IM CALLING THE DOCTOR FIRST THING TOMORROW TO ARRANGE TO GET IT REMOVED! I promise to keep you posted!
Its really annoying though, because apart fro the fatigue, brain fog and psychosis, it did wonders to lighten my flow...

Me too, Staffa! I love having no periods, but I have thought I've had PCOS or something for about a year now- horrendous weight gain and bad skin and hair on my face . The worst is the low energy, naps in the day, no motivation.

It's coming out. Then I guess I'll know within a few months whether I can blame that or if I've just become a lazy slob...

I posted on here a couple of days ago, and Im having the coil removed tommorrow (after almost a year of having the Mirena put in), as Im going through sheer hell! anxiety, sickness, spots, aching joints, weak bladder, weight gain, the lot!! and I had a period a week ago (1st one since January), so clearly my hormones are all over the sodding place, but my concerns are, how long (roughly) did it take for these awful feelings to go after having the thing removed? Ive read that some women actually feel worse afterwards!! and that terrifies me!! the worst feeling I have is anxiety/worrying, its driving me nuts! im fine for a couple of days then whallop panic again! I can tell its hormonal as I have the sickness thing, just like morning sickness, and spotty skin, greasy hair, tiredness, all the normal pms things but on a large scale! if anyone can let me know there experiences on this, I'd be really grateful. Thanks x

Also relieved to find this thread. Not normally a mumsnetter but in desperation after a weekend when I almost thought about ending my marriage, suddenly thought - hey, I've only been feeling this down (insecure, down on myself, agressive, hating everyone, angry all the time, no interest in sex) since I had mirena fitted. So I googled side-effects. I too have mitigating factors like new baby, older children driving me up the wall, building-site of a house, no sleep etc. but I have been coping happily with all of that for 6 months, so either I've just finally had enough or the coil is to blame. Will have to decide what to do but just a relief to find there are others out there experiencing same. Feel better already.

HW10 · 09/09/2010 14:28

I had a Mirena Coil fitted in 2005 after the birth of my 2nd dd. For the first few years it was great.

However, things started to go wrong, mainly the panic attacks and anxiety.

I hadn't associated this with the coil until I found this site and others where alot of woman have had similar side effects. I feel like crap and have the following:-

nausea, weight gain, mood swings, lack of patience, anxiety, panic attacks, hot sweats, permanent blocked ears, off balance sometimes, obsession with becoming seriously ill etc etc!

I decided that I was going to have it out a few months ago and booked in for the FP clinic. However, when I got there they talked me out of it saying that these symptoms couldn't possibly have anything to do with the coil and that any other hormone related contraception would have the same effects! I (stupidly) left it in.

However, I am going to go and have it out, I just want the old me back!!

Had a mirena in for 18 months and when i had it taken out I felt so much lighter and brighter. It really doesn't work for everyone.

pilates · 10/09/2010 20:45

I'm waiting to have mine removed - the worse thing I ever did. Bleeding all the time - to the point where I'm on iron tablets, very low, tired and moody. I tried to get it taken out in the doctor's surgery and they couldn't find it. I was then referred to the hospital for a scan who said that it is still there but not in a good place and to take further protection. I also now have fibroids and the earliest I can see gyneacologist is end of October.

sharonchey · 20/09/2010 21:42

i had the mirena coil fitted friday 29h Oct (yesterday) i had 3 sections & previous ovarian cysts and now fibroids. i suffer from long and painful periods due to the fibroids.. at the gyne clinic my consultant suggested the mirena as a last resort then would be an operation, the 20minutes of the mirena procedure was terrible.. the 1st one he put in came out.. the 2nd time he said my uterus was pointing the wrong way so he had to "nip" it to hold it in place which most females dont feel... whilst i bawled my eyes out!!! after the 2nd procedure i had severe cramping and bleeding and was told o give the mirena 3-6months for my body 2 get used to.. im only on day 2 and want it gone - i havent slept the pain is unbearable - i have 3 kids to look after while my partner works and it seems impossible to do so with these horrendous pain.. i have taken paraceta

epicfail · 03/11/2010 10:48

shellbell how are you now?

This doesnt seem right - I had mine in under a general and I had discomfort for weeks after, but not pain like you are describing.

nella2 · 03/11/2010 11:21

Hi - I had mine fitted last Easter. Since then I have felt really bloated, skin problems, weight gain and depressed. I have always been a bit low in mood generally but lately I can't seem to do the housework, my head feels fuzzy, I feel tired all the time - from the minute I wake up in the morning. I'm going to ask to have mine out I think having read this.

pawarmum · 03/11/2010 11:29

HI,,

I have a mirena, it was fitted 2 years ago as i got pregnant on everything else and 3 kids +2 misC, i didnt want to risk it.
So far no Preg, but i have put on weight which for most of life i didnt not even after the babies. and i have to say that my monthly is not great. There is much blood as such, but the pain is much stronger and my scalp goes crazy, i get really stressed for those few days, and then im fine again
i would prefer to use nothing, but i dont want to risk getting pregnant again as 3 is enough and i cant go through losing any more either.
however, i did used to have Depovera injections before my last child and i was really depressed, and lost loads of weight (not in a good way though) and was sick a lot. so on balance i think the coil is better.

pawarmum · 03/11/2010 11:30

btw, i got pregnant on the depo with my last baby (now nearly 5)

tb · 07/11/2010 12:16

I had a copper-7 and a graviguard-t both without major problems, although the copper-y was best. Both before dd.

After dd was 5 I had the Mirena. I bled for nearly a year, not quite enough for a tampon, too much for a knicker liner. It was gross. I eventually had it taken out.

Shell, have you thought of endometrial ablation? It's only licenced for heavy periods, but has a contraceptive affect.

muffin80 · 07/11/2010 12:35

Hi everyone,

I've read all the posts to this discussion and am so so glad I'm not on my own!

I had the marina coil put in 3 years ago and it was great for the first few years. I am now going through awful changes.

I have hair where I didn't before (I'm 30 with no kids...yet)
My poor boyfriend has to deal with my mood swings and panic attacks.
I get back pain and sore heads and also my skin has gone all spotty.

Writing all this down, I can see the obvious option but I was pretty hormonal before it was put in.

Any suggestions???

Robbo1969 · 15/02/2011 22:05

Have had the mirena coil for 4 months. It has turned me into an emotional wreck. Mood swings, depression, suicidal thoughts, random period pains. All worse if i have a drink too! Am having it out at the earliest opportunity.

NorthernGobshite · 15/02/2011 22:21

I bled constantly for 3 months after getting Mirena coil and got it removed as a result.

Rorogeorge · 16/02/2011 09:13

Hi, haven't had time to read ll the posts, but just wanted to say I had a bad experience with the mirena too. as soon as it was in ( which was VERY painful) I began to feel not like myself. Moody and grumpy. I began to feel like my stomach was thicker and I had no libido. no lubrication even when lots of foreplay when aroused. This had a negative effect on my sex life!

I also developed horrible boils on my scalp and hairline. I tried it for 5 months, then decided enough was enough and I' now back on the pill. I have been recommended the copper coil as my periods are fine, but I am very scared it will hurt on insertion so may go to just using condoms as I'm totally sick of it!

oldenoughtowearpurple · 16/02/2011 09:21

Well, I just wanted to say that I've had Mirena coils now for 17 years since the original trails, one after the other. I have had NONE of the symptoms you have had and have had ALL the benefits - no periods, no PMS etc.

I am gutted for all of you - the Marina saved my sanity. Mirena is a hormone-based contraceptive and I know that hormones don't work the same way for everyone. Anyone thinking of giving it a go and now concerned - maybe talk to the doctor about trying a pill with the same hormones in it before having it inserted? Because if it works for you in my experience it is FANTASTIC!

puglet123 · 22/02/2011 21:45

I agree with NorthernGobshite. I had mine in for 4 months - was an absolute cow to everyone! I had it removed ( which took all of 30 seconds!) and am now back to my old self. I had it put in for heavy painful periods but now I use a mooncup and have a lot less pain!

NorthernGobshite · 25/02/2011 19:39

I wish I was brave enough to try the mooncup but the very idea makes me nauseas!

RunkidsKID · 03/03/2011 19:35

Does anyone suffer dry eyes since having the mirena
As mine are terrible thinking about having it out!!!!

KentMum2008 · 04/03/2011 16:17

I have to agree with oldenoughtowearpurple although I've only had mine in for a year. I suffered with terrible heavy and painful periods, to the point where I was chronically anaemic and the first 3 days of my (8 day) period I couldn't go out because of the pain I was in. I did query whether I might have endometriosis as my mum had it but they said they wouldn't test me and it was unlikely as I had 2 children already (my mum had 3 so I'm guessing thats not technically true)
Anyway, I had it fitted last year and did start to put on weight, but as I had so much more energy because I wasn't anaemic anymore, I quickly lost it again. My hair thinned a bit, but it got stupidly thick in both pregnancies anyway, and that tailed off and it started to grow back. I developed mild acne but I spoke to my (absolutely lovely) GP about this who gave me an antibiotic lotion which works wonders. And in any case, even if these problems hadn't gone away, the benefits, for me, far outweigh the side effects.
Mirena is not for everybody, just like the pill isn't for everybody (it made me throw up) but I think in cases like mine (my GP prescribed it solely for period control, I really wanted another baby so it wasn't for contraceptive purposes)its the best solution.

mollinadeville · 27/03/2011 20:58

I'm really glad I've found other people have had problems with the mirena, I had terrible pain after it was fitted, could barely move for 3 days! but persevered as the no periods thing was a real draw, I've had problems with the hormones with the pill before but my gp said as the hormones are localised with the coil I wouldn't get the hormone related side effects. Unfortunately I had this fitted 3 months ago and i've become a complete wreck! no control over my emotions, depression, no energy, anxiety etc. I really wanted this to work but evidently I just don't get on with hormones. Really thought it was all in my head till i read this tho, have been driving myself mad! Good to know it's not just me!
