So embarrassed .... what do we do about threadworms?

I have changed my name due to the shame

I am sure that DS has threadworms. He often complains of an itchy bottom and I always thought it was because he may not wipe his bottom properly.
Anyway, this evening he was screaming and writhing from major intense itching ... I had a look (yuk!) and am sure I saw a couple of teeny white wormy things. His poor bottom was red and inflamed.

Feel like a terrible mum ... what do I do ... can I do something without having to go to the doctor (have been 3 times in 2 weeks with various ailments of DD and feel I live there!)
What has caused it? He is good at washing his hands after going to the loo but he is a nailbiter (more shame )

dead simple treatment you can get over the counter im sure.
Ask at the pharmacy....wear dark glasses and balaclava or go to a different city to purchase said ointment if it makes you feel better! LOL
nothing to be embarrased about at all, these things get passed around very easily.

Any pharmacist will give you a prescription.
Very common.Not shameful at all.

Nailbiting will have done it! Don't worry - you'll be amazed how common it is. If you have an all-night pharmacy locally they may be able to give you vermox over the counter. The GP won't actually see anything other than redness when he looks. The whole family will be treated. Good luck.

wormy · 30/08/2005 21:22

I think he may have had them for ages ...
Sigh ....

It's something you would notice straight away. Don't worry. It's easy enough to sort out.

myturn · 30/08/2005 21:24

I meant, it's NOT something you would notice!!!

yoyo · 30/08/2005 21:24

DD was crawling with them by the time I found out. I was heavily pregnant and she kindly brought one to me on her finger for inspection. Could have vomited up the baby the way my stomach heaved.

wormy · 30/08/2005 21:26

Eeeewwww, yoyo, that is so horrible!

Oh, wormy lol!

No need for disguises, or shame - if anyone on MN says they haven't had worms (in the family that is) they are incredibly lucky or lying - or guilt, because it takes time and experience to twig quicker than you have.

Nailbiting will do it every time. And now you know you can look out for it (because he will get them again - trust me - BTDT etc)

You can buy the stuff OTC but enough doses for whole family is quite expensive - go to GP (or ring HV, ours used to drop one off IIRC) and get free ones for kids at least, or if you're lucky enough for all of you.

When I say "one" I mean a prescription, sorry.

Janh · 30/08/2005 21:29

I breed them in fact and post them round the country to MNers.

turnupthebass · 30/08/2005 21:31

Our ds's have both had them. Very easy just go to the pharmacy in the supermarket and tell them you need tablets for thread-worms.
All the family need one tablet and they do work.
make sure everyone has the tablets though, otherwise they may come back. And change the sheets more often than you normally would.

When they came back in our house it was me that had them (extra vomit factor yoyo??).

At least I could say to the pharmacist "my son has threadworms" for less embarrassment!!

Nasty little things - every sympathy!
