where do you live?
Is there a dental hospital near you?
Can your GP help?

trinakmh · 24/08/2005 20:25

Thanks mumtosomeone, I will call my dr and see what he says.

the situation is pretty dire at the moment in terms of nhs dentists all over the country at the moment tbh (we are going through a major reshuffling of the way the services are provided) some areas are better than others, i'm afraid all you can do is ring around the area and see if any have spaces (there is no catchment area like there is with gp's so you can phone futher afield) otherwise i'm afraid you'll need to look into private/bupa etc dentists

EvesMama · 24/08/2005 20:46

do you have family close by who are registered with one??i got my boyfriend, daughter and my mam registered with mine because im already there..they take ages normally..good luck

We have really struggled. Most of our local ones are not accepting any new NHS patients and haven't been since we moved here 2 years ago. And those that are are limiting registeration to people living within a certain local area to them.

Luckily DD had a referral to the dental hospital and until this year she has 6 monthly checks there. Sadly that had now stopped. DH and me have not been able to have check ups since moving here. Luckily I did have a check up just prior to moving here though, so not as long as it could have been.

We are due to move house end of Sep/early Oct and I hope I can find soemwhere on that list.

"Waiting time of up to 5 months for initial apppointment for routine care."

I have a great one in NW10 london if anyone needs one in that area.

Tinker · 25/08/2005 16:59

Even if you've had one for 12 years, they can now start demanding you pay from £12 pm

Blimey, I pay £24 a month

Tinker · 25/08/2005 17:02

Yes ks. Mine has sent a letter telling me he's switching to a monthly payment plan scheme.

charliecat · 25/08/2005 17:06

My dentist wont accept NHS who arent on benefits...or something like that. So the money I had for the kids for the summer holidays was spent on a filling for me
So pleased to actually have a dentist for all of us though....had to do it.

chicagomum · 25/08/2005 17:09

the reason why a lot of dentists will only accept people on benefits is that they are gauranteed to be paid for the treatment done as the nhs pays for it where as if you aren't on benefits you pay most and the nhe tops up a small percentage so sometimes its a battle when patients don't pay up

makealist · 25/08/2005 17:26

I had to take ds2 (age 7) to the dentist yesterday for a filling. It cost us £75

After telling us how good ds2 teeth were (except for said cavity) he has asked us to go back for a checkup and for some x-rays!

On the notice board it said ;
Dentist £220 per hour
Hygenist £110 per hour
I would like to add....
Mother's wages...£7.50 per hour

charliecat · 25/08/2005 17:40

My dentist gives you the estimated bill before you have the treatment, which basically lets you know if you can afford the filling or not.
There is a sign saying all treatment must be paid for on the day...I would like to see exactly what happens if someone says...Err havent got that much on me today

charliecat · 25/08/2005 17:40

Hygenist at ours is 35 quid a visit.

chicagomum · 25/08/2005 17:43

believe me charliecat, it happens all the time "i forgot my wallet" "i don't get paid til friday" etc etc what are we supposed to do ? pin them down and remove the filling? you accept what they say and trust they will return with the money, some do some don't (what annoys me is you wouldn't go the the supermarket an do that at the check out and expect them to let you go home with the food and pay next week)

charliecat · 25/08/2005 17:47

You have got to be a bit cheeky to do that though, I mean my face would be I always have a cc with me for just that sort of thing.

what you have to realise is that at the end of the day a dentist can only have so moany patients on their list before it becomes tha case that they can't provide a suitable quality of care , ie you have to wait ages to get an appointment and don't get the time you deserve because they are rushed off their feet
