my NHS dentist stopped doing NHS work in May - we had been with them for 10 yrs and now don't have a dentist.

The payment plan they offered was £15 per person per month and this gave you free checkups and Xrays plus a princely 10% off fillings etc

Since the only work I've needed in the last 10 yrs was a replacement filling, I declined their offer.

I ended up phoning everu dentist in yellow pages and eventually went with one that would take on my kids as NHS if I went with a private plan for me!

Not ideal but the best I could manage.

Some dentists were asking for £200 to take on me , with £75 per child and then we would be private!!!

Horrific!

I'm going to encourage my 2 to go into dentistry!

it is personal choice of the dentist , (providing they have an nhs contract number )should they wish to do so they can offer nhs care to kids, those on benefits etc etc, but they are under no obligation to treat anyone under the nhs

My payment plan is £310 a year and for that I get 2 dental exams worth about £90 each and 4 30-minute hygienist appointments at around £45 each - a £360 value. In addition, I get 15% of any treatment and worldwide dental insurance.

My kids get free NHS in the same practice.

happymerryberries · 25/08/2005 18:24

Ameriscot, mine sounds like the same basic deal. As I said it was the best that I could manage.

I don't pay anything for my kids though, and with five of the blighters, that makes quite a difference!

My dental practice is one of the few that is still taking new NHS patients, and there's only a 2 month wait for a non-urgent first appointment. And it is a really excellent practice - very high tech and much better than any I've been to in either the UK or the US.

well TBH KS, I wasn't unduly impressed -- -they are 6 and 3 and so far the 'exam' seemed to consist of a 20 second glance into their mouths

happymerryberries · 25/08/2005 18:30

Oh and having finaly found a practice that would take us we had a 8 week wait for an appointment!

iota · 25/08/2005 18:32

If I'm going to pay for treatment, I'd like to think I'm getting value for money.

I use as a comparison, the excellent treament that I used to receive from my former company's dentist. He was the best dentist I have ever been to and I am getting a little long in the tooth.

Tinker · 25/08/2005 18:36

I'll root out the letter in a bit ks but it sounds like iota's. And, I too, have had no treatment (other than a crown last time I was on maternity leave!) in last 12 years. So it would be £144 pa for nothing for me.

Ameriscot2005 · 25/08/2005 18:39

Do you get hygienist visits with that plan, Tinker?
