Is anyone else voting tactically?

A tactical vote in my area would be Conservative about 2% ahead of Labour, I don’t want Labour and I usually vote Green. However I do not want a Labour super majority and as an MP our Conservative MP has generally served us well and he’s always got back to me.

What should I do? I am struggling to vote Conservative as I never have.

What to do, what to do...........

Sorry, I'm stuck too. Don't know which way to go.
Nearly 70 years old and never felt stuck like this before

Meadowwild · 04/07/2024 12:29

I've been voting tactically for over a decade. Anything to keep the Tories out in my area.

SmallGreatThings1 · 04/07/2024 12:30

You realise there is no such thing as a ‘supermajority’ don’t you? It’s some bullshit the tories have come up with to get people not to vote. It’s either a majority or it isn’t.

Chocolateismylovelife · 04/07/2024 12:30

No because why would I give my vote to a person don’t believe in.

AppleCream · 04/07/2024 12:31

I honestly don't think there will be a labour super majority - I think it will be a lot closer than that (due to people's reluctance to admit to voting Tory in polls).

orchardgirl4 · 04/07/2024 12:36

You can do a vote swap. Something to Google, but probably a bit late for that now. I'm voting tactically too (to stop the Tories), so the other way around.

AutismHelp1980 · 04/07/2024 12:37

I am at a point where I don’t know who to vote for and tempted not to vote. I am very angry with the Conservative government over a number of issues however have family in the Civil Service and am aware of a lot they’ve achieved that doesn’t get seen or recognised.

Ah ok! Jeez didn’t know about this, I can’t put the tick against conservative but I don’t want labour they are about 33.00 conservative and 28% labour here.

I would vote Tory in that instance. That said I did it once before and had to have a long shower when I got home. Not a bloody clue what to vote this time round.

You have my sympathy. And yes while a majority is a majority - a huge majority is not helpful either.

orchardgirl4 · 04/07/2024 12:39

I'd phone up one of your family members in the civil service to find out their perspective. It's too hard on this forum to get a clear perspective, a lot of conflicting views.

StampOnTheGround · 04/07/2024 12:40

I would vote tactically too - I feel voting for one of the others is a wasted vote, so I need to do whatever I want best out of the main 2.

Mnetcurious · 04/07/2024 12:40

It doesn’t make sense to me that as a natural green voter, the Conservatives are more aligned with your values than Labour.

Thank you @orchardgirl4 the view is to vote Conservative particularly on Foreign Policy.

Vote Conservative.

A super majority means that any Bills or Acts that get pushed through Parliament won't have anyone to scrutinise them.
That's what democracy needs, even if it's Lord Buckethead.

FawnDrench · 04/07/2024 12:41

Yes I am.

I know!!! But I don’t want Labour in, I have had some interactions with our local candidate they are not very good.

been sitting outside this polling station wasting my lunch hour.

Supermajorities are a thing in countries witj written constitutions where you need eg 60% of MPs to make a constitutional change. They're nonsense in the UK.

Yes, the only thing that makes sense with this ridiculous FPTP system.

Bluevelvetsofa · 04/07/2024 12:43

I voted tactically to try and get rid of the Tory.

orchardgirl4 · 04/07/2024 12:43

Good for you to know.
Lib Dem are also the tactical vote in many constituencies, so three main parties to choose between. Not in my area though. There are tactical voting websites that let you know where that is possible.

You are concerned about Green issues, and yet are prepared to vote Cons, instead of Labour. Makes absolutely NO sense at all.

Bills get passed by votes.
Bills get scrutinised by MPs and Select Committees. If all of these are Labour MPs, whipped in to pushing them through, that's not democracy.
Starmer will also flood the House of Lords with Labour peerages, so this will make blocking Laws that might not suit the general public even easier to get through.

Surely voting with your heart (ie Green) is best in this situation then. It will always be lesser of two evils if we continue to vote like there’s no other option.

Curlewwoohoo · 04/07/2024 12:47

I would not vote Tory. No way. What's wrong with a labour majority!!!!

My heart is with the green party. But I voted tactically for lib dem today, according to the polls they could get rid of the Tory dinosaur we've had here since 1997. I disagree with his voting record on virtually everything.

On your point about civil service, what on earth do you mean? I work in a non departmental public body myself with sits below the civil service. We have had 10yrs of cuts, pay freezes, zero career progression, and get regularly berated by Tory MP's of being red tape to be done away with. For doing our job and protecting the environment.

Curlewwoohoo · 04/07/2024 12:48

Vote green OP. Then they will get your smalls or whatever it's called! The money they get per vote. They put it towards funding office staff for the greens who get in elsewhere.
